Animal Crossing Main Character apparently confirmed

Katsuya Eguchi, director of the Animal Crossing games, has been interviewed in the latest issue of Famitsu. In it he discusses the upcoming Animal Crossing game on the Wii, although one of the questions ties into Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

FAMITSU: Have you been approached to contribute Animal Forest elements for the new Smash Bros. game?

KATSUYA EGUCHI: Yes, and there is quite a funny story to it. A few months after E3 2006, (Masahiro Sakurai) contacted me and asked if I'd like to develop possible Animal Forest ideas for Smash Bros. Originally, we settled on just a quick, simple Animal Forest item, but with the success of Wild World and the Animal Forest film, he asked if I'd be up for designing additional elements. [Laughs] Fast forward a few months and I had stage and character concepts created. Sakurai chose his favorite of the stage concepts, slightly tweaked it to his liking, and we together decided on the final Animal Forest character, which is a very fun character to play. With both the stage and character I utilized ideas from the games. For example, if you play the stage at night, the sky will be dark. If you play in the winter, expect to see snow, and leaves in the autumn time. And yes, trees will be decorated on Christmas! It's really something else. I worked very hard on this one little stage! [Laughs] The Animal Crossing character is very much like the one in the games. You know, he will use his axe, fishing rod, bug catching net, and everything else from the games.

I'd always felt that the main AC guy would be the best chance for AC rep...and with the AC stage, I was almost certain that there would be an AC character in the game as well.

I like that he's apparently confirmed an Animal Crossing character, without saying who it really is.

And I've seen the Animal Crossing film, it's pretty darn entertaining.


Also saying he had character concepts, plural, means they did decide between several different kinds of recognizable AC characters.

...I find it very, very cute that the directors of each game are being asked to help with Brawl in such a manner. Helps give everything a really good flavor for each particular franchise.

If you look at the last two sentences, it implies that it is the main playable character in the games.

I'm hoping for a little feature in Brawl that allows you to customize your dude(tte) however ya want.

The stage can't have "Christmas" lights if it'll be released worldwide, unless he's only talking about the US version of the game. Maybe he meant holiday lights, generic ones, instead of actually having something on the 25th of December...

True or not, it sounds neat at least. Although an adorable little cartoony human running around trying to kill his opponents with an axe is kind of creepy. I think it would be strange to include humans in the background and as playable characters in the foreground. Why not just use all animals in the background instead?

I'm obviously aware of that, but in the Wild World DS game, that's the reason why they didn't have Christmas or Western holidays as part of the game.

AC human is honestly the best choice for a brawl character. s/he has the most potential for a varied moveset, and is oviously the main character.

and it was pretty obvious from the moment we got a AC symbol, that we would get an AC character. those who say otherwise just cant accept the truth.

Do note that it wasn't said who the character would be. The director only refered to him as The Animal Crossing Character so as to not spoil who it was. The fact he didn't say "The Animal Crossing Main Character" makes me still suspect that we'll be seeing Tom Nook...

Plus, from a purely visual stance, the AC humans just aren't all that interesting looking when compared to the critters like Nook, Redd, Resetti, Slider, Tortimer, Kapp'n, etc.
