Unlocking Characters with VS. / Brawl mode

well so far ive been unlocking my characters through VS. mode with my friends. I was wondering if u can unlock characters in VS. mode against computers and not real people.

no u cant do it against the comp but u can just go to stock mode and put it to 1 stock and have 2 players and one just fall off the edge. its a little time consuming but it works alot better then fighting. a little tip tough... keep track of ur life count

Yes you can unlock characters thru computers...that's how I unlocked Snake & Ness

I have a quicker way than a-mans way. Its how I unlocked all the characters :) Go to special brawl make it stamina, flower, and fast. then in the other options, make it stage always random. ALSO, make u have 150 hp and the other dude have 1 :P itll go 3 2 1 GAME! lol. Hit start over and over again till you here 3 2 1 then after game hit start over again. with abou 15 minutes a day for like 2-4 days you got all the characters. I did that cuz i though sse sucked. I played it more and I got addicted and beat it today :P

Why don't you play through SSE, you unlock most of the characters and it never gets tedious.

To actually answer the OP:

Yes. As long as atleast one person is playing (ie you can't do all-computer matches) than it counts towards the eventual goal of unlocking characters by VS. battles.

Edit: If you're playing against computers and no other players, I believe you also have to win to activate the opponent challenging you (but not necessarily to increase you Vs. battle count). The winner of the match is the one who gets the Challenger Approaching. So if you get to battle 160 and you don't see R.O.B, it might be because you were only playing computers and you lost. Just beat on a lvl 1 computer to guarantee a win to make them come out.
