View Full Version : My problem with approaching and sheild grabs

Toon Link's range is versatile, yes, but he can be overpowered by some characters; in my case, it's in the situation of playing wolf. So I run into problems when I'm getting shot with the lasers and have to jump over and make the first move.
Like most TLinks, I short hop and Fair and Bair with the occasional Nair, but the Wolf who I play shield grabs as his main strategy. So he'll just block my incoming aerial, then grab me. I used to beat this by just running up a z grabbing, but toon link's throw is both slow and has a lot of lag after it, so it's more difficult to use.
I guess I'm looking for help/others' thoughts on:
a. how you use range more efficiently so you don't have to make the first move
b. how you diversify your approach tactics to perhaps avoid the shield grabs

I'm not sure if I understood, but I guess you could try the Short hop double arrow until his sheild breaks and/or he has to move...

if he reflcts your arrows just stand still. your shield should stop the arrows and he might do something like rush in. at that point you can combo the heck out of him.

Approach Strategies involve alot of rock/paper/scissors.
If you like running in and sh fair or bair, yet get shield grabbed, you should try to space so that when you land after you attack you are either 1) far enough in front that his grab misses or 2) DI behind him so he wiff's his grab and you have a prime opportunity to attack.
You could also just use an empty shorthop. Run short hop like you normally would but don't attack and just land waiting for the missed grab or land and immediately grab/attack choice when he doesn't expect it.
As for projectile spam, I'm not quite sure but if you stand still your shield may just absorb the attack. <.< Well that works for link sometimes.
Otherwise you could full jump pull out a bomb, double jump then chuck it, followed by a boomerang/arrow. Start your own projectile wall.
Toon link's projectiles are beastly, especially with quickdraw, so you need to get used to spamming in return. His projectiles should easily beat out wolf's lasers, so you can easily use them to your advantage in a given situation. The pressure from your own attacks will force him to stop lasering and defend. Lasering isn't as versatile as boomerangs, bombs, and arrows, and therefore can't be used in defense.
If I'm wrong on any of this, my bad, it's just thinks I usually think/use that work for me, but may not work for your.

Wolf is so broken/annoying.
When all else fail, land behind him and start raping.

use a melee strat vs shield grabbers, approach with a sh and he'll shield, do your second jump just before you touch the ground and dair, 90% of the time he'll whiff grab, wolfs grab isnt very fast and you'll have more than enough time to punish for the miss, or just don't approach.. just try and break his shield with projectiles..? and as tin said, make it a point to land behind him, if youre a competent TL you should be able to f*ck him up after that
oh yeah if you play the same guy as wolf alot hes gonna start expecting that second jump and ground dodge your attacks instead, so make sure to mix it up.. alot
sh double arrows is a really good idea too, dont forget u have better projectiles

Wolf, by comparison play of other characters, has a strange offense style that is sort of unique. Beware of his dash attack because he jumps and does a back flip, unlike all the other characters who will do a forward attack when cancelling from a dash. Don't get too worried up about his blaster, because if you let TL stand, he can block the shots with his shield. Just don't try and smash too much, other than USmash, because Wolf has pretty decent range and all of TL's smash attacks are pretty short in comparison to his other sets of moves. Try to keep moving and doing the quickdraw tactic (only do it if the wolf player doesn't know how to effectively use his shield (DownB). Lob a few bombs at him because his DownB doesn't effectively work against exploding items, so he'll take damage from what I've read on Wolf section of the boards.
