View Full Version : Sliding Up-B. Very cool.

Hello Smashboard,
This is a technique of sorts that I have been attempting to incorperate into toon links game. It's a little difficult to describe, but hopefully you will understand my attempts.
Anyways, start a run, and use an Up-B mid run. While toon link is in the begining animation of his up-B, slide your control stick a quarter circle either forward to backwards to make him slide roughly two feet in either direction. If you do a normal up-B, you will slide. If you rotate the control strick to the direction you want to slide, you will slide even more. This is especially noticable when you try to slide in the opposite direction you are running.
What makes this technique not completely useless besides for MINIMAL spacing, is it allows Toon Link to slide off of the stage during his up-B, which results in a really awkward floaty * in air * up-B that stalls at the edge and then is canceled by a ledge grab.
I'm going to try to video tape it. It is difficult to preform in regular speed. Try 1/2 or 1/4th speed to execute one of the ledge canceled sliding Up-Bs.
No experimentation has been done with other Up-Bs out of dashes. Hopefully people will be able to replicate what I'm describing. Videos will be made.

I'm trying to understand how this works, is it a lot like what Link and Y. Link could do in Melee? Or is this something different. Try to explain how the finger movement works for the slide.
Edit: Ok, I can do the ledge slide up b, its a lot like the trick in Melee, mabye easier. What I'm confused about is there some sort of slide that can be done from a stationary upb?

I've never tried to do it stationary. I would assuming it doesnt work. I noticed it first when I did a running up-B and immediately jammed the opposite direction of the run on the control stick.
After figuring out you could slide backwards, I just used it to slide forward and thus off the edge.
Button inputs are as followed:
--> (run)
up-B
<-- (quickly after the up-B)
You should slide backwards a small distance...
or...
-->
up(B)
--> (quickly after the up-B)
Allows you to slide more than you do in a regular run.

ok its actual called up-b edge cancel
and you can use it to pivot our body off edges
the only point in using it off the stages edges ( that can be grabbed)
is to up-B edge cancel fallfast edge grab
if you look in the tips thread I made I explain it

So...it's like Mario/Lugii's Down-B from Melee, except input only in the beginning? Or am I completely missing something?

You can use this to grab the edge. However due to Hugging it is completely useless.
It is faster, more accurate to just hug the edge....

I did this in Melee! It’s cool.

Works better for Link due to obvious reasons. Kinda useless for Toon Link.
Ah, you bumped this from like what, 4 months almost?

If I ever use Toon Links Up-B in the middle of a match, I'll be sure to do this.

What if a girl is watching you play Toon Link and you want her to get turned on.. just do this flashy trick and it shall do the job
:)
ha completely usless my ***
but on a serious note...
What about edgeguarding a Faclo that likes to use the side B to recover?
The sword looks like it could cover a little over the edge if Falco is trying to side B on the stage. And if the Falco is sweetspotting it looks like it will still hit the sword, plus it wouldn't matter because the UpB would be canceled with the ledgegrab...
Just a thought. Who knows.
Either way its flashy and sexy and Santi likes
:D
I'm doing it right now and it isn't that difficult once you get the timing right.
Good find Aether. Keep em coming.

Hmm, this usefulness depends though. Due to the new sweetspotting mechanics, you may whiffing it and getting edgehogged since you kill your jump by doing this. Also, if you slide too far, you'll not sweetspot the ledge, but fall to your miserable doom. And of course TL's sword is kinda short. And if it doesn't hit at the final strike, you won't be sending out your opponent anywhere.
Food for thought, but I'll try to apply this. At worst, this thing will be able to gimp tether-dependent users, at best it'll gimp spacies' recoveries and more. Other disjoint recoveries like Aether and Dolphin Slash will probably gimp Toon Link and not the other way around.
So I'll try this out tomorrow instead of playing Theory Fighters Brawl.
lulz Santi.
It looks so weird to be falling while using your up B
Edit: This would be very easy if I was B-sticking

Do you use thisin a walk, or dash? Can it be applied to Link?

Woah very interesting, I will try it later today, too tired right now. A video would be appreciated, although it doesn't sound too difficult to pull off.

So far, since your complete spin attack is interrupted by the ledge sweetspotting, your foe won't be sent anywhere at all unless I've done it wrong. At best, it would probably disrupt a fastfallers recovery forcing them to U+B and you could edgehog them there.
If it lasted until the final hit, it'll send them out but in an outwards position so even then it might not be that useful since that generally gives opponents a BETTER chance of surviving since horizontal DI is easier in this game so to speak due to the engine's floatiness.
Also, when you're doing this, remember to DI into the ledge otherwise the sweetspot won't register and you'll die. Perhaps if you DI in once the spin attack is FINISHED, we might have a viable technique that Link doesn't have exclusivity to.
I will poke back here and say more stuff if Santi doesn't come saying it's truly legexy for Toon Link when I come to post my further findings. ^~

You know I was just playing around with this today, and something weird happened.
I threw a boomerang off the edge and caught it just as i fell off the edge with Up-B, and it just like canceled with Up-B animation and i was standing on the ledge.
Weird.

Did you catch the replay? I'd like to see it.
So...Toon Link can scrape the ledge now...like Wolf?

Do it in a dash.
Yes. It works better for Link since all of his Up+B sends the foe away, while Toon Link's only sends the opponent away with the final hit of his Spin Attack. This technique is actually a staple of Link's edgeguarding game, but since Toon Link's Up+B is kinda sub-par, it's not a good edgeguarding tool...yet.
Perhaps we could find something to apply to this technique to make it viable in play,

Lol legexy. Anyway, seriously, is this useful? I haven't tried it, could you edgeguard with it?
This is good if strategically used o.o

Alright, I was messing around with this today as well.
Doesn't seem to be that useful in battle, but is hella flashy.
I did a weird thing where I instead of grabbing the ledge, just remained on the stage.
I got a vid of it too, just let youtube load it up and I'll post the link.

Its funny, because I can now do this every time. One where he swings the sword, and one where he doesn't.
But I can't see myself using this in a match.
