View Full Version : Toon Links Final Smash - I cancelled it, how did I do it?

I am sorry, I have no video of what happened. I forgot to save it.

I was playing my friend over WiFi. He was Toon Link, I was Lucario. We played on Smashville.

He got a Smash Ball, but didn't use it straight away. I was standing close to the edge, and he was hanging on the edge.

He did a ledge hop to Final Smash, or Triforce Slash, but something happened.

Lucario did some weird pose, pushing Toon Link away as the thing connected, which made Toon Link fall to his death.

Any idea what may of happened?

PS. I was standing still, I didn't do an attack as it connected. I think I may of shielded though, could this be a result of a "Perfect Shield?"

B-Forward? He does a weird pose when he does that.

it was the positioning of the characters, probably not the move.

I was playing a computer Lucario with TL and he cancelled mine, too. It looked like he just shielded...

i'm not sure why it does it exactly (most likely due to positioning), but on certain stages toon link's final smash will just auto-cancel itself but still do a small amount of damage.

the stage i noticed it happening the most often on was yoshi's island (brawl). i tested it 10 times and found that 4/10 times it auto-canceled itself (though maybe i just have terrible luck, who knows):

me as toon link and a stationary character as bowser with bowser sitting on the tilting platform in the center of the stage. i grabbed the smash ball and jumped onto the platform, then used my smash from a few feet away, in pretty much this exact position (i was standing completely still at the time, not jumping and not using it immediately after stopping):

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/breakfastclubrules/smash.png

the smash went off and the triforce graphic appeared, but then i froze for a second before being thrown backwards and the smash just stopped (also during the time i was thrown a short distance i couldn't move, attack or jump, almost like the fall after using up + b, only without the flashing character graphic). bowser had been at 0% prior, but was now at ~10-12%, meaning that something had happened despite the fact that no attacking animation ever played.

anyway, what i'm going to assume is the problem here has to do with the mechanics of toon link's final smash. unlike with other smashes that require you to "catch" your opponent, this one brings you to them rather than them to you (as with ike's smash which brings the both of you to the center of the screen, passing through obstacles on the way or meta knight's which doesn't require either of you to move). because of that fact, and the fact that i was standing on a surface that was sloped just so, that small slope wasn't enough to stop my fs from "catching" bowser, but was still enough to stop me from actually being able to reach him (since neither of us was actually in the air at the time i guess the game didn't recognize him as being "above" or "below" me, and so didn't actually attempt to approach him at an angle). so, the game recognized that the smash had started and began dealing damage, but then realized that there was still an obstacle between my target and i and so auto-canceled it.

this isn't the only stage i've had it happen on either-- it's happened to me on yoshi's island (melee), green greens, smashville, lylat cruise, the great sea and more recently (during a match with some friends last night) bridge of eldin.

however, the fact that not all of these stages have sloped sides leads me to believe it may not be a simple matter of positioning, and there may be other factors involved (moving platforms? just plain bad luck?).

this is all just what i've found from testing it myself though, it might be different for other people. i also tested it with regular link and found that it didn't happen at all, on any stage.

regardless, the fact that it can potentially auto-cancel itself makes it even worse to me than it already was (a pain to aim, can be air dodged, doesn't kill on large stages or at low percentages, is only single-target, you only get one chance to hit with it, etc. shut up i do not complain too much). oh well ):

i aplaud eck's reasearch, but one problem, SMASHVILLE IS FLAT!!! not tilted like on yoshi's island when you did your reearch, so i should have been a point-blank FS......

?????????????????????????????????????

you could have used your shield at the perfect time ( a.k.a. perfect sheild ) and reflected the attack.
