I was in the same boat as you: main TL, go on vacation, come back and suck. However, something clicked the day after I got back and I started playing better than before I left (>,<), but yea.

Training techniques? I'd like to hear some other ones besides what I do, especially for those who don't have people to play against whenever I feel like it. I personally think that just going at it with 1 lvl 9 CPU, with the character selection on random, is the best way to train when you're alone. Random CPU's allow you to get to learn more of every character out there, helping you predict moves with growing confidence, while the level obviously means it won't be a walk in the park, and that, if it is, at least they'll be moving around enough for you to practice combos, shield breaking, etc.

I personally just bash on a random immobile character and aim for speed in terms of connecting my moves. Spacing isn't really an issue. Just weave in and out with an aerial from an advantageous distance.

I also make sure I have my SHDA timing down consistently.

lol actually when i first started to get used to TL i did use lvl9 cpu at random and i think that since currently i dont have internet on my wii, all the sandbag comboing has died down. But today i played my brother and he didnt win once, i just have to get my RARing faster

Whatever you do, don't train on CPU's. They act nothing like a human would, and just get you into bad habits.

For example, you could dair the **** out of a CPU, but when you get into a tourney, and you spam dair, you get ****ed.

The only thing you can do to get better is to play people, and practice RAR, SHDA and bombsliding in training.

good luck!

Yeah, CPUs are terrible to practice on (especially level 9s). Some people play level 3 CPUs to practice their spacing and dodging attacks. They're not good for much else... I'm using them to figure out spacing for the characters.

Really? Why level 3s? If you are going to train against a computer, why not play a lvl 9?

And the best training method is to play new people and practice different playstyles.

Level 9 computers exhibit immensely quick timing and predictability. They powershield a lot (80% I heard? Not sure...) and their reactions are nothing like a humans. Apparently level 3's behave more like a human player would. Thats not to say 3s will be more challenging than 9s. Its just landing hits on level 3s require skills closer to those used on humans. Beating level 9s require good timing and figuring out their pattern.

Just go online and play with people. That's the best way to train imo.

I play against CPUs and they act nothing like a human. They can predict almost every move your gonna do.
Im not saying i wouldn't stop playing against them, but playing against people online or with your friends is the best way.

Just because a computer can predict your moves and shield accordingly doesn't mean they don't make good practice mates. It's the difference between comboing on the worst player ever (i.e. Lv. 1) and on the best (Lv. 9). When you finally think you're good enough to test your RARing in the real world, play a Lv. 9. It's better practice than you'd think.

As far as training goes, practice the basics. I recently configured my controller so that tap jump is off. I never SHed in Melee and had a hard time transitioning, so forcing myself to jump with Y is the only way I can make it work. Practice your SHDA timing (if you like that sort of thing), and RAR practice is good. After that, just play all the computers in a match, at whatever skill level is a challenge, but not so much that you find yourself unable to land a hit. You'll learn to deal with the fastest combos and the slowest. Then just keep moving up.

That's all in my opinion, anyway. It's working for me.

Work on Short Hopped aerials and connecting them quickly to other moves.

I can SH Easily in a training room. But when I get into the game under pressure, I have about a 25% chance of messing up my SH's. Any way to practice working well under pressure?

yeah play against humans is the main thing, only time i use cpus is just when im bored of online or need to test out some things. What i do is i set up times to play against my friend online as kind of a training session.

Yeah, Thats what I normally try to do...
[Off Topic]~ Is it just me or does online lag pretty bad.... as in I push a button, and theres a delayed response.

Yeah, that definitely isn't just you. I wish it was. The half-second delay is pretty much the reason why I don't play online very much (that and that the Olimar I practice against keeps items on). It doesn't affect me too much, but air dodging and rolling out of attacks becomes a bit harder.

I have found that experience really is the best teacher and that if you just play with enough computers on level 9 you really do become that much better, I also recommend working on the few ATs we do know especially Mellow D's Short Hop Double Arrow. Finally I would recommend becoming more comfortable with using some of the new additions to brawl like the changes made to air dodges and footstool jumps. Good luck with everything guys!
