View Full Version : bomb as an approach?

i was playing my friend, we were running at each other on FD, i had a bomb in my hands, so i SH-threw it at him, and charged in. The bomb blew him up off the floor, and whilst he was still stunned i ran in with a running up-smash, and caught him on the tip of my sword.
it was working regularly at lowish %'s (him as metaknight, so pretty floaty) so i was like sweet, this seems like a solid approach. then he learned to side step the bomb, so i just charged in for the upsmash anyway and found it easy to hit him coming out of his spot dodge.
so, the only way i can see them getting through this approach is to just shield slide (im sure theres a technical name for holding your shield with running momentum) and shield grab you, so i have yet to try it, but if you just mixed upsmash with toons decent grab range, you could keep it unpredictable and a good approach. thoughts?

You can avoid it by jumping. The bomb is nonetheless extremely useful as an approach though. Sometimes thoug you might try throwing your boomerang diagonally above your enemy before chucking the bomb. this will seal their ability to ump to dodge it and they will probably have to roll away to aovoid your rush. (Shielding the bomb doesn't work too well since if you're just behind it you can grab them.

upwards angled boomerang sounds like a good plan. i find waiting to see how he reacts to the bomb is pretty useful, cos if he jumps, i find it easy to just f-air him if hes high % or n-air him, altho i guess the boomerang followed by aerial would be better...

I like using this approach as well, but ill wait just a little bit longer before upsmashing so i slide behind my opponent and he's hit with the end of the upward slash. I seem to have more luck with not getting shield grabbed this way, and in addition it sets up a nice bair combo

Bomb to nair is so good. Sometimes from above, I'll hit them with a bomb and it'll send them upwards. I'll then do a falling uair and kill them or at least do some good damage.

What if they do a short hop air dodge? Wouldn't that catch the bomb?
Anyway, what my cousin likes to do with bombs is when he's coming back down, to stop me from juggling him he grabs a bomb out, and readies to throw it down followed up with a dair. Usually I just don't bother with it and let him come down since we play 4 player FFAs, though I've been thinking of method to stop it (as Snake). Possibly take out a grenade, dodge his bomb and as he dairs, toss the grenade up.
i have been doing this with TL since the launch. It is almost flawless and allows me to always get the first few hits in. If they side step the bomb/rang or arrow on the first approach, you can always still up-smash them. IF they shield or you want to keep them always thinking i go for a down grab to up-tilt. If they jump at you too, do a f-air. I find i always have the advantage like this and i tend to keep this combo going since there are so many outcomes and i have projectiles to keep me with the advantage.

In addition to this, I use the bomb-approach as a mindgame.
If the bomb lands directly in front of my opponent, I occasionally sit inside the smoke while they shield for just long enough, so when they put their shield down to attack I can slip in a grab or a tilt.
All of the smash attacks are to obvious for it, though.
