I can't seem to get the SH down so well. Like I can do it a lot often but sometimes I jump too high. Any advice?
Also how can i keep my back to my opponent all the time like i always seem to turn forward a lot when i wanna bair them.

Toon Link has a very laggy grab that is VERY punishable if missed. You're better off sticking to tilts and aerials.

toon link's grab is best if used out of a pivot. you can sneak it out when dashing away from an opponent.
simply dash away and then press grab and immediately to the opposite direction from your initial dash.

also if you can predict the exact moment when somebody lands on the ground again. you can line up a dashing grab. if you time it well they can't dodge it.

short hopping...hmmm
want some training? take a quick character like fox into training mode. put it on the highest speed and then practice the shorthop.

it's all about the length of time that the jump button is held down durring the press. so if you make a conscious decision to pull your finger away with the same speed you put it on, you should do alright. just a tap.

to travel in shorthops with your back to your opponent you will need to direction influence your jump (pressing right or left) no earlier than the precise moment when you press jump. if you spend too much time on the ground there is a chance you are pivoting on the ground before you jump off. this is because you are pressing to the side direction too early. if you repeated shorthopping many times in a row while only touching the ground for as short amount of time as possible, it might make practicing this easier. if you are heading in one direction just hold the stick over and keep timing your jumps well. don't give him enough time on the ground to pivot.

As far as the grab goes, I may "fail" at TL but just let him get in close, shield, and hit "A" easy grab with TL, or work on timing it as fast as you can.

Put Melee into your Wii
Go to training
set 2x speed
choose Fox
now short hop.
In case you are slightly confused with thechene's statement:
Don't touch the control stick until you are in the air.
