View Full Version : Toon Link is hard to play?

I've started maining Toon Link because I do enjoy playing him at times, but is it just me or is learning hidden combos and techniques a lot harder to do with Toon Link than other characters? I don't know, but I have a hard time winning with Toon Link.
I practice combos with him plenty of times, though they take a lot longer to actually learn than other characters I've mained.
Has anyone else had this problem when they first started off?

I almost quit TL the first week I played him.

Even two months after playing Toon Link, I've really found him to be very annoying to play with at times.
At went to a tourney and got paired up with a Marth user the first round. I played TL since all dittos in this game are ridiculous and even then I barely won. Since all of Marth's attacks outrange TL's (yes, not even Zair can save us), some clever bomb play left me standing as a winner, but a fatigued one.
So I did a Marth ditto since I don't think I'd be able to win again on Marth. Behold, I won one of the lamest match-ups in the game without too much trouble.
That is ****ing messed up. WHAT KIND OF GAME IS THIS?!

TL is tough to get good with, but I think learning him is rewarding enough to do it. He has many different projectiles and good moves to mix up your game so you can just get better and better with him...slowly. It's great to see your own improvement and it's very easy to notice it too.

I dunno, I think I picked him up pretty quickly, and he was the second to last character I unlocked. (wolf)
It might be because Young Link was my second favorite in Melee, like TL is my second favorite here..
I personally don't know or do many "combos", but he's great for mindgames.

When first starting off, no.
Later on, yes.
But ehh its different for everyone I guess.

rewarding? I guess thats why TL has won so many tournies...wait, never mind. Obviously it is hard to play TL effectively if no one is winning tournies with him.

He was for me too. And probably the reason holding me back is that during Melee ANY time I would play link or young link I played the sword fighting game.
Always though projectiles were useless, until a week or two ago.
Yah I'm a scrub :x

eh, I use projectiles obviously when I'm at a distance, and for tricking people to run into me and get SWORDED! For example, I'll throw boomerang towards them and upwards, and a bomb or arrow towards them straight. They can block or dodge, but if they jump over it towards me, I can attack them, and then the boomerang comes back...hard to describe, but stuff like that.
I also use the bow because it's an amazing recovery when you're hit and you shoot it right before you land.
I really need to practice Zair though, it's something I never used, but now I've seen how useful it is, and lagless...

I didnt have that much trouble picking him up actually. Ofcourse, thats probably because I played young link a lot in melee. But I make very good use of bombs, boomerangs and down B.

I had too much love for Young Link in Melee, so Toon Link is getting just as much love. At times I definitely do feel discouraged but when you get right back on track you just keep getting better and better. Besides, Toon Link is too much fun to play as :D.

Simply put, Toon Link is relatively easy to edgeguard. Once they learn how to dodge your projectiles from offstage, a gimp can commence. Toon Link's other problems are stationed in his predictability [until you find a decent player] and his paucity of kill moves. Sure, he can kill, but sometimes you just can't get them off the sides because you accidentally used your fair as something other than a kill move.
To play well with TL, you have to be creative. You can't just double bair with an occasional nair. You have to get your hands dirty with his projectiles. Shield pressure and damage racking are obviously his better tactics, so be sure to utilize them. The lack of some originality in one's style is probably one of the major setbacks that new TL users have to overcome. Everybody knows TL has an excellent bair. So why not do something unbelievably ****ed up? Release grabs? Bomb to Up air and/or Dair goodness?
And of course, don't forget to edgeguard...

I dunno, I've always found him to be fairly conducive to my playstyle, so I mess around with him a lot. It can be frustrating at times, but it'll be the same as any character. Since I play one of the most counterintuitive characters in the cast, I'd say Tlink is easy by comparison.

Tlink isn't hard to use, no character is except Marth and Jiggs. lol at OP.

my bad. correction: He's hard to play and be half decent at the same time.
TL is definitely not hard to play. It's pretty easy to throw out projectiles and bait people into your attacks.

TL's recovery is actually very good. If your opponent is dodging your projectiles and still has enough time to gimp you properly, and your opponent isnt m2k, then you are doing something wrong.

He's hard to play, but it is deffinatly the most rewarding when you do pull off that awesome combo/s which rack up tones of damage and your friend next to you is like "wtf...."
And you really do have to practise to get those wins against certain charaters (like marth) so you can get that final KO hit.
I dont think i've had a boring match with him yet?
I'm even considering swapping Dedede as my main, but what i think has started boring me about DDD is that i concentrated to much on him because he was my main. I'd prefere to keep him my secondary to make sure i can keep having these fun matches.

Toon Link was so easy for me to pick up. The first day I played Japanese Brawl, I won every match I played with him. In Melee, I thought Young Link was decent, but what I really wanted was a Link with speed and power, and combined with my love of Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass, Toon Link is like my dream character come true.
Is Toon Link difficult to play? Maybe, if you're not patient. Toon Link is a jack of all trades, right? The one who can move from defense to offense. I love it. I freaking love it. To barrage my opponents with various weapons, making my opponent move about in frustration until I find the perfect moment to rush in and slice them with my sword...it's really great. It can be difficult at times when the opponent has a reflector of some sort....or when the opponent is broken as hell, but in the end if I can win as my favourite character it's all worth it.
In fact, the only reason (at the current moment in time) that Toon Link isn't considered my main is because I can't really see Pokemon Trainer as a "secondary". I mean, he doesn't actually counter anyone. He's probably the most 50/50 character in the game, and having the powerful Toon Link to fall back on when PT falls is awesome.
Long live Toon Link!

I think the term Jack of all trades is suitable for Tlink. Unfortunately, people who know the full term of that statement will further agree that it fits Tlink very well. "Jack of all trades, Master of none" Not particularly good at anything. But yeah, he's 50/50 with most characters, and I enjoy playing him. To me, he doesn't make me want to take a shower after playing him, or against him. Like Pit....or Snake......yeah...I feel like I need to cleanse myself in fire after a match with them.

For me, toon link isn't hard to use at all.
Y.Link was my main in melee, so when I got brawl, I done SSE straight away, then got T.link.
And sinse then ive loved everything about him. I play a defensive game. And T.Link complements that, perfectly
If your an offensive player, then I would recommend a different character to use.

I find Toon Link very fun to play, but I DO find him very annoying sometimes. I got paired up with a Falco at a tournament and played Toon Link instead of Marth hoping to stop Falco's laser spamming... After a very LONG match, I DID win, but maybe I would have been better off using Marth in the first place...

Lol i mained Kirby (haiii) but played link alot aswell, and when brawl came along they took away his speed in place of power, which is what i liked about link in melee, he was fast (enough) and still packed a punch with his Dair.
Tbh i think Tink Dair is stronger than Links Dair from melee because it just seems to connect well.
There's no way TL's dair is better than Melee Link's dair.

Thanks for the constructive posts so far :x
I see a lotta people mained YL in Melee which is probably my problem. I switched mains out every now and then. If I found Mario was borings I'd play Pichu, if IC got boring then I'd switch to main Link and so on.
And I never in my life played against another human on Melee, just NPC's.

why so many 08'ers in this thread? not to be rude ir anything lol.
Yeah, TL is easy to play casually, but if you want to go to a higher level, well, look at tournament results. Toon Link is really hard to use at higher level play and no one has been able to use him to his full potential yet.
AND THERE'S NO COMBOS IN BRAWL!!!

Same here. For some reason, Tlink just feels like Melee Samus did. I feel like I have the same kind of control that I did with Samus, and that's such a nice feeling. Brawl Samus is so clunky now.

That's not a combo lol, that's just chaining bairs. There's not enough hitstun on the bair so you can airdodge out of it

^^; Actually, I was talking about Pokemon Trainer, calling him a "50/50" character. I don't think Toon Link is 50/50 at all. I think he's really good against most of the cast.

Toon Link is definitely hard to play as. He has no problem giving out damage, but his KO moves really aren't hot. I love how you can chain a lot of his attacks from his throws. Like, at low %, I Bthrow -> Bair -> Bair -> Jab -> Dthrow -> Uaerial. I love that you can do things like that. I usually can only pop that combo off every two, three matches though, lol
