View Full Version : question about SHDA (having problems)

i thought i had a good SHDA, and it was easy to pull off. But i saw VietG videos, and his SHDA was way better and faster than mine. Today i was practicing it but it was too difficult, i did it only twice in a roll, and i did 1 every 20 attempts. Went to training mode and with slow speed, and i noticed that my problem is with the first arrow, so the question is, how can i do the SHDA easily and perfectly?
Btw, i always have a bomb in my hand, and throw them with SH+throw bomb+arrow (quickdraw) or SH+Zair+throw bomb, i think i mastered those techinques, should i learn SHDA anyways?

Yes.
You can't always have bombs.
I SH with my right index finger (Y button) and immediately tap B. I can't do it with just the thumb.

I put my left thumb on B and my right thumb on X.
Horrible, but thats the only way I can do it. =(
Theres a thread about this I'll find it for you.

i use the classic controller
i main Lucas, and use ZL to jump, but only for the wavebounced Zap Jump. I'll try this setup for the SHDA, also, i read about using one of the taunts for specials, i'll try that too, thanks both of you for the help

You should never jump and then start tapping B (or whatever your special button is) until you've SHDA'd. You should learn the timing by simply shorthopping + shooting arrow as quickly as possible + shooting another arrow right before you land. Just 3 button presses per SHDA.
I myself learned it by being in training mode until I managed to do it 5 times in a row. Every day few times little by little. Then I started using it in matches. Before you notice you can even do it in 1.5x speed in training mode.

i set my r button to specials so i just tap jump and soon after almost simultaneously press r. for the second arrow i tap b or r as i know the timing for a quick draw so i don't have to randomly tap b to shda.
i tried this because i already used r for specials as it made doing the zap jump much easier only requiring me to press the buttons at the same time instead of having to move my fingers fast enough in a way that is awkward to me.

I use R for jump (ya I'm weird) and use my index finger to hit that and my thumb to press b and don't really have much of a problem with it.

There's a certain amount of initial jumping frames where no matter how fast you buffer, your arrow will come out at the same time-the first available frame to start the move. Knowing this, I never bothered setting up an alternate control scheme. I kept tap jump on (I like to use both x and the control stick to jump, depending on what I'm doing) and simply got used to it. :) Unfortunately, there really is no "trick" to this technique...however, it sounds like the original poster must not be shooting the second arrow in time.

today, i had a really good time practicing the SHDA. I noticed that this technique is pure timing, you can have fast thumps, but it doesn't mean that you'll have a perfect SHDA the first time you try it. Also, i get the timing with the sound of the arrow, maybe this could help somebody with the problems with the timing

I SH and shoot an arrow all with my right thumb, default control scheme. (I guess I have fast thumbs, IDK)
The best advice I can give is, find out the way that is fastest and feels the most comfortable for you. SH and immediately shoot an arrow. Then learn the timing of when TL can shoot another arrow, and do one at the earliest moment.

I don't understand how you can't get it...it's the easier version of Fox's shdl (Melee) You should try to shoot the 1st arrow immediately after shorthopping.

I'm surprised it's problematic really, I find that the second arrow is fired late enough that I don't need to be really quick. In fact if anything i press b too early quite often :/
It's definitely more timing than speed

First arrow is speed, second is timing. And thumb speed improves by training it, people who played melee competitvely probably have no problem with this stuff. I myself had trouble doing it at first but now it's easy even in 1.5x speed like I mentioned somewhere before. >_>
The thing is you shouldn't change your control settings just because of it.

it's speed and timing. To be honest, i suck badly at AT's, but i can SHDA 90% of the time, and it's because i came up with a really good control scheme. Probably bad news for you, it requires a classic controller. But it works like a dream.
In addition to the other button i use to jump with, i have set ZL to "Jump" for the sake of SHDA. That allows the jump component of SHDA to be on a different hand than the shoot one. I tap ZL, (ZL is better than L because it isn't soft and springy, btw) tap B immediately after, and then tap B just before hitting the ground.

i use the classic controller too and also jump with ZL for this kind of ATs (A is my main jump button)

Meh. It doesn't matter what control scheme you use. Whatever works best for you. I personally use the default controls, but it doesn't matter. Also I completely agree with APC. The sound helps with the timing.
I just practice in slow mo on training
I do this aswell and when i brawl with friends i just keep practicing even if i don't make the second arrow or get the timing wrong i still keep doing it then after a few weeks i should get it right.
