Ok, let's break it down -- basic terminology you should know (you've already asked about hook shot, so I'm just going to cover terminology):

Basics: Tilts = directional on the control stick (lightly, aka not a smash) plus attack (default a). Performed on the ground.
Smashes = "smash" direction on control stick, while hitting attack (can be charged). Performed on the ground.
Jab = a on the ground, sometimes repeated for a combo (TL has a 3-attack jab combo).
Airs, or aerials = Attacks. In the air.
Fast fall = Falling fast by pressing down after the apex of your jump. Shortened "FF".
Directional Influence = Moving side-to-side in the air by pressing a direction on the control stick. Shortened DI.

To be efficient, people tack on letters abbreviating one of the four cardinal directions on to the beginning of things, sometimes hyphenated, more often not. So "Down aerial" becomes D-Air, or DAir, or dair. Fair is "Front Aerial". Finally, "neutral" is a neutral-stick position, for "nairs". You'll see similarly dtilt, dsmash, etc. Get used to it. :P (ZAirs is just short for z attack in the air -- it's TL's hookshot. People also add directions to ahead of "throw", like dthrow -- I'll let you figure that one out as your homework.)

"ff nair", therefore, is a nair performed in ff -- Neutral air, performed while Fast Falling. It's useful out of a SH (Short hop, a jump performed by pressing the jump button and releasing it before your character leaves the ground... it's a shorter jump).

Few other character specific lingo: SHDA is short-hopped double arrow, arrow cancel/quickdraw is pulling and shooting an arrow as you land on the ground, which cancels the animation (incredibly useful, basis for SHDA and a lot of TL strategy/tricks). There's a lot more AT (Advanced Tech) that is used in TL play... but this covers the basics.

Vocabulary is fun!

(Was that mean? That felt a little mean... I really needed more than three and a half hours of sleep last night... Oh well, certainly won't make it up tonight! And noel -- don't worry, we all didn't know these things at one point or another (aside from me. But I came out of the womb with an NGC controller in hand. Which was really weird, 'cause the Gamecube didn't come out until, like, 2001... 11 years later. People were confused.

But I digress -- you may want to look up some of the general terminology threads, they're pretty good... In fact, I *really* should've just linked you, but that would've taken forethought. Stupid hindsight... always mocking me... calling me names... freakin' jerk...)

Pre-posting 'causeIknowI'mgoingtoalreadyhavebeenbeatentothepun ch pre-edit: I know I know, overly verbose and way more info than I should've given. I'm tired, sue me (disclaimer: don't actually sue me.).

Also, I'm impressed with myself -- I managed to ramble off a 2 paragraph post-script parenthetical. It's like a gift or something. And now I've got another 2 in an edit that isn't even an edit! It's a freaking pre-emptive edit!

For no good reason, make that another *3*. Oh, and I'm going to lean towards the aforementioned "or something". I hope you all enjoy this. Oh, the irony of the "Post Quick Reply" button... how you mock me.

*ACTUAL EDIT* EDIT: Wow, nevermind... I really *was* the first response. Everybody else must be asleep or something... too many Texans on this board, IMO. Though, in fairness, it's 1:20AM my time as I post this. Sleep is for the weak.

And yes, I'm kidding about the Texans. Please don't shoot me. (Yeah, I went there. Stereotypes abound, because UnderWing is tired and rambling! In all seriousness, I love Texas. Aside from your heat. So what I really mean is: I hate Texas. But I love Texans. Seriously, got family out there -- you guys rock in general. I should really make sure to look for a Smash tourney the next time I'm out visiting... plus I can John about the heat. Win-win! :P)

Is anyone seriously still reading this? And I thought I had problems. You should see a Doctor, I think there might be something wrong with your head. and when I'm the one diagnosing it, you know it's bad.

I'm just going to end the insanity here, with a *second* signoff line. I figured this post deserves it.

EDIT: And, of course, in my tired and weakened state, I forgot the second signoff line. Let's try again:

Ladies and gentleman, the talking encyclopedia. ;)

Basically, short-hopping is a term used to describe...short hopping so that your aerial moves can be used against enemies on the ground while maintaining ground speed.

Wait, short hopping is short hopping?

I've had it wrong all these years! I thought short hopping was hopping short!

... I think we should just let this thread die (as much as I am proud of my last post in many ways :P). The question's been answered, hopefully satisfactorily.
