Im not claiming myself to be a Toon Link pro, far from it, but I have been playing Toon Link for the past few months, and as you can see by my minute post count I dont come on smash boards that often.
what I wanted to say to anyone who has any ideas about what they think toon link is like. For a start here are some things I have notices -
If you are new to smash bros and dont know what DI is or how to DI you are proberably going to die at about 80% untill you do (I played a game earlier vs an Ike where I was on about 200% before i died, this was due to his attacks degrading and DI).
Toon Link has great recovery, if you can keep from being knocked out the stage boundries you should be able to recover about 9.9 times out of 10.
(beginners) Dair isnt your friend. though it is a good move you dont want to be using it unless -
You KNOW its going to hit
You know that even if you miss you will have enough time to roll or put your shield up before you get punished
If you want to intentionaly miss for the knock back effect make sure you are close enough, this is an amazing thing to throw your opponent off but if you dont do it right you are so close you garentee punishment.
ALL of toon links projectiles are your friends. Bombs are amazing for the reason that they can be used for almost anything, attacking, recovery aids, stopping spikers. I rarely dont have a bomb.
Most of the techniques for toon link aren't practical. -
Bomb dropping in itself is going to take you around 3 seconds to set up, in which time you have just got a face full of sword. yeah you might be able to pull it off but really they arent just going to stand there and let it explode, ive tryed it a few times, they just pick it up and throw it at you.
bair bair bair bair bair, yeah its easy to get in a double bair at times, but if you watch videos of toon links who just bair the whole match they usualy lose. its not practical to use all the time, as for all the techniques. yeah they are good on the off chance you can use them, most of them are just to show of. My advice is learn them and slowly bring them into your game, you look like an idiot if you just SHDA or Bair the whole match, srsly.
Toon Links grabs are naff, and it doesnt help that if you miss you have about as much ending lag if not more than a missed Dair. but this time you are garenteed to be close. The only time I even suggesting a grab is if the other guy is shielding, which if you are playing good people they WILL do between your attacks which are predictable e.g. A A A combo or Fsmash's second hit. Practical aplication is this - A A A combo becames A A (wait) Z ->throw->arieal attack
Now I will talk about specialcs -
The boomerang -
Pros - if you really really learn how to controll it you can have supprise attacks better than you could dream of. I seriously suggest learning how the boomerang works if you havent already.
Can be used to stop chain grabs if you throw it before you get grabbed, not as effective really as a bomb
- Its pretty consistent, you can use its a diagnal throw to stop the oppent jumping while you shoot them with an arrow. Which chances are they will shield, so if possible dash then grab.
Cons - This really is long range only, try to use this close range and you could just get punished before even throwing it. I found I used to throw it to try and stop approaching enemies but ended up just getting a face full of arieal attack. if you are on the ground dtilt or a, if you are in the air just use nair. the boomerang is too risky
- Ending lag is just painful if you arent expecting it. there is NO point whatso ever in trying to shorten your dair lag with a boomerang catch because its just as bad. make better use of the time, SHDA or something so you arent getting that catch lag.
- Its slow, its predicatable unless you are super booberang expert.
Bombs -
Pros - Gods gift to link
- Use bombs to hit someone standing by the edge trying to stop you from recovering
- Use bombs to hit someone who is already hanging off the edge trying to stop you recovering
- Use bombs to stop 99% of attacks because it either =priority or over prioriteses them.
- Use bombs to stop someone attacking you from above
- Use bombs to stop chain grabs, if you are holding a bomb before you get chaingrabed you might explode and save your life.
-Use bombs to help you recover
-Use bombs to throw at someone who wants to spike you.
----------This is something ive not seen on the toon link boards but it might be on here somewhere, I figured it out a while back but I assume its already known about-------
-->When you are taking out a bomb, hold A (keep holding), then when you press the Cstick to FSmash you wont throw the bomb you will instead Fsmash, press c stick again to do the second hit. Practical use? none really unless they are on a low % then you can throw the bomb at them, if they are on a higher percentage I guess you can use it as a distraction toon link SHOULDNT normaly to be able to do a Fsmash while holding a bomb, might throw them off i guess or then proceeding to the the first thing in the cons list.
Cons -
- Dont bloody use these things to try and stop you from dieing when you Dair, thats the most stupid thing ive ever read. You are going to have to have been holding the bomb before you knocked them off the stage, which is near impossible unless you use my above technique. Its no good taking the bomb out after you have knocked them off for a number of reasons, one if you take it out then jump off and dair and miss you will die because the bomb doesnt explode that fast. So you wait? Wrong again, too late they have recovered way before you are going to be able to use the bomb to stop your dair and be able to recover from it.
-if used close you might get yourself damaged.
-can be catched and used against you
Arrows -
Pros -
unless you are stupid, you should be far enough away to not have to worry about reflectors, you should either far enough away that it just disapears or hits your shield.
-if show when hitting the ground you can fire that suppirse arrow, i think more effective than SHDA as i will explain in cons
-arrows can stop most oncoming projectiles, charged arrows can stop even more (bombs can stop like everything)
-spam in team games when FF is off to annoy the crap out of the other team.
Cons -
SHDA is crap. its not worth the time spent perfecting it, arrows get shielded most of the time, so shooting two just means two arrows shielded. times better spent using it as a supprise upon landing.
- is fast and if you are too close, reflected it can hit you.
- can be out prioitised by just punching it sometimes.
Spin attack -
Pros - usefull as hell
- great recovery distance
- Multiple hits over a long span of time means its hard to edge hog it unless times perfectly, if times wrong can end up spiking the edgehogger with that last hit.
- use close range against rollers to stop them
- someones hanging round the edge of the stage waiting for you to jump up off the ledge, press down and the use it to rise up and hit them as you go onto the stage.
Cons -
Dont use over the stage if they are not in the air or else you enter freefall and are punished on your way down.
- miss and you are wide open.
Teather recovery -
Great edge hog if timed correct. if you cant grab the edge speedy just jump off the stage (Facing the stage) and press z you grab fast. dont bother pressing z again to retract the hookshot untill right before they go to grab the stage then press it where you will be granted immunity frames. also if it retracts itself just press the direction away from the stage then z quickly and you will re-grab on, you can grab the stage 4 times before having to go back onto the stage because it wont work again unless you do.
Just general tips -
Dont play toon link word for word of the guides you find on the net because most of the information is just how in a perfect world you would play as toon link, in reality half the stuff isnt practical and you get punished. Get a feel for toon link, read the guides so you know what to do, but dont try to imitate them word for word. just be yourself.
Dont make videos of yourself playing and then upload them saying how good am i? or rate my toon link! Because i dont know if you know this but everyone looks **** recorded. and posting a video of you bairing someone for awhole match doesnt make you good, it just means the guy you were playing was an idiot. Dont bother if you want to find out how good your toon link is why dont you post something like "who wants to play my toon link" or even better go on the friend finder and fight someone to see how good your toon link is.
I cant stress enough that you need to play for yourself, I dont read character guides but i can see why some people do. This really isnt for people who are already good toon link players this is more for people who are just starting or maybe thinking to play toon link.
it doesnt matter who you use, you can read all the guides you like if you dont understand the basic fundamentals of the game you will still be bad. Work on timing of everything, timing is key to any character. if you can nail timing you will be good with anyone.
Thanks for reading this has kept me amused for a good hour or so while i should be asleep.
I know i cant spell but i doubt this will get read much so im not that fussed. I might make some edits and what not at somepoint.
Long live toon link eh?
