View Full Version : Toon Link vs. Kirby Matchup

Over on the Kirby boards, we're using this week to review all of our matchup ratings, because we recently restarted our matchup discussion. The focus is on correcting outdated matchups and finding agreements with other boards. The thread can be found here (http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=195032).

One sticking point is the fact that the Kirby boards have their TL match down as 60-40 in favour of Kirby, while the TL boards say their match is 70-30 in favour of Toon Link. We'd really appreciate it if you guys came over to our discussion thread and gave us some input. Thanks.

I found the Meta Knight.

Wonder why there is such a big difference in opinion, I think I read what both have to say.

Edit: the Toon Links have not reviewed Kirby yet in there new match up discussions.

Kirby is the Meta Knight. MK gives Kirby the 'Master' in the Amazing Mirror, allow Kirby to sport a dark oceanic blue hue and white eyes and you:

I stand by my earlier guess, that he's using Infinite Dimensional Cape.

Kirby - Toon probably depends a lot on the player.
If they both know how to handle the other charecter, i'd give it to toon like 60-40 or somethin.
In the air, kirby probably wins, but can't kill very well. Toon kills in the air. Since Kirby is sorta light, Toon's Uair kills early.
Kirby's recovery is great, so off stage gimping probably isn't a possibility. Usmash/Utilt would be the kill moves to use on Kirby.
Kirby's Fsmash is really strong if they don't degenerate it. It kills pretty early, but Toon should probably make it back due to the trajectory it sends you.
When offstage and recovering, its probably better to pull out a bomb if you can. That way if Kirby tries to Dair you, you have a better chance of making it back.

Anyways, if the general ideas of what kirby and toon link can do to each other are the same, then the only difference lies in the way someone makes up a score.

I find that up close Toon Link and Kirby are pretty even. Kirby has faster smashes but TL has his nair and bair to damage and outspace kirby. What sets the matchup in TL's favor are his projectiles though.

I can't stop thinking about this.

1. Is it the word Meta Knight in the fourth line? That seems to obvious.
2. Hmm, take the "met" out of something, the "a" out of signature, the "n" out of can, and the "ight" out of highlighting. Is that it? I also doubt this because...well...seems kind of too obvious/lame. XD

On topic, Kirby's always been a difficult matchup for me. He seems to short for me to use projectiles effectivley and his fsmash just SCARES me...

The only useful tip I got, was always dairing after getting your ability copied because it's guranteed to hit. Never bothered to test it though.

Kirby sadly has a lot in his favor in this matchup. I will do whatever I can to help toon. Us ebombs and boomerang as ur most important projectiles in this matchup since SHDA isnt as effective since he can jump multiple times against them. Do NOT try to gimp U will get gimped lol because hes better off stage instead if he is offstage throw projectiles at him while hes recovering since it will annoy him and it will be harder to come back. When he is in the air and looking towards u do NOT hesitate to use bair strings since his fair is very slow and u can punish his airdodges with MORE bairs and uptilt if he is close enough to the ground. Do not try to outange his bair with ur bair ikirby has more range. Use JC bomb throws, zair, nair retreat to arrow cancel , occasional SHDAs, angled boomerangs and jab in this matchup. Beware of his grab combos at 0%. To kill i usually kill my friend's kirby with uair and upsmash. Oh and also something neat i like to do that not many TLs here do ( not even santi he comes up with all sorts of weird stuff xD) and i think its great since opponents wont be expecting it just DONT overuse it. When ur opponent is in a position to be punished jump over him ( u can also footstool combo) throw a bomb down towards him and then fair or uair its great. U can also zair run towards them and shield cancel ur dash to an upsmash basically what this does is punish his obvious airdodge reaction to ur zair to upsmash "combo". Thats all for now might come up with something later.

About the matchup: judging by these responses its almost certainly neutral...but there seems to be some variance regarding 55-45 either way
Can you guys come to a consensus?

I hit and run to some extent. He can easily air dodge or just float over my projectiles too. I find it more efficient to just go up and Bair and then try to beat him with projectiles. He's hard to fight.

I hate playing good Kirbys (more so than play other characters handled by good players;) they tend to 'duck' under my projectiles (except for the occassional bounced boomerang which connects,) especially my quickdraw, which I always try to use upon fast falling. It doesn't help that Kirby can also rack up damage easily early on in the match with it's forward throw>uair>etc. combo.

So, what do I do against a Kirby? Bait it into using it's strength, aerials, and spam projectiles in the air. If it sounds painfully simple and elementary, that's because it is. ;)

I'd call this matchup about even to be honest.

I'll restate my opinion: this matchup is neutral. That's really all I can say...they both have their strong points, but if both players are knowledgable about the matchup, they can work around each other.

I'd go into further detail, but I think I'd just end up saying something stupid. :D
