people are constantly blaming toon link for spamming.
With arrows, bombs, boomerang and zair (they consider zair a projectile sometimes too lol) coming at them all the time, i can understand why.
but in fact, each tool is unique, and serves different purposes in battle. And the correct alternation between them is sweet music to any toon link player.
So here is some thoughts to help you argue with those people.
i think spam is when a move is repeated. That is DEFINITELY a property of spam.
but i think the second property of spam, specific to the situation in brawl, is the fact that most options in brawl have alternative options.
Example: Instead of jumping into the air to attack a falling opponent with an upair, you can stay on the ground and wait for the airdodge to finish to punish with an upsmash.
the first time you chase them into the air with upair and hit them.
the second time you chase them into the air with upair and they dodge.
that's the evolution of a fight.
the third time you bait them to dodge by only short hopping once and then landing. then they fall right into your upsmash.
this is all the development of a fight.
this is a circumstance that has multiple options. The fight is made up of these circumstances, where people's decision making shifts the flow and rhythm of battle.
An organic fight grows and develops according to the choices made at these crossroads. (That's why fighting AI sucks)
the SPAM that people HATE is the spam that simplifies a situation. It takes a circumstance and gives it one outcome. Or a move that can be used in practically every circumstance, thus reducing all the unique circumstances in a fight, and lumping them into one category.
It simplifies the game in a way that the players don't have that organic flow, where they grow and develop and make new choices.
with that dangerous kind of SPAM, in any given situation, that ONE move is the only answer. Thus, as long as that situation occurs, there will be no other outcome but the use of that move.
It does not require the fighter to think or adapt. It requires them to just use and re-use.
All purpose type moves can be considered spam as well. As long as they nullify the unique qualities of individual situations in a fight.
Example: Whether the enemy is dashing from the ground, rolling through, coming up through the floor, falling from above, or jumping from the air, this ONE move will answer all occasions.
Thus the repetition. The player only needs to use the one move because it covers most situations and always wins out in the situations it covers. Thus it is a single technique strategy.
Real world examples: Wolf on gamebattles wifi. Laser laser laser dsmash dsmash dsmash laser laser laser dsmash dsmash dsmash
which is terrible because if there's enough lag, it's' extremely difficult to fight. That's why I think wolf shifts upward on the tier list in the presence of lag.
Now there is the spam that makes a player annoying, but ultimately predictable, and thus is actually a weak point in his tactics, which allows you to overcome him in a fight.
This kind of spam is done by newbs. People don't worry about that spam. It doesn't reduce the metagame.
