View Full Version : Starting Toon Link

Although I main Marth, I wanted to switch up my game against my friends and decided that also maining or making TL a secondary would be a smart and enjoyable idea. I'm a total smash n00b. (Yesterday in the tactical discussion I posted the thread "What is Spacing?") So I could switch to TL as my main. Apparently I take information on this game in like a sponge, so as a TL player what are some of his playing styles and what is some key info that I need to know about him? The only main combat styles I can see are offense and camper. I've heard that zair is very important and found it a bit surprising, but I see why.
This is what I know.
zair is good
The projectiles make camping easy to mix up
bair can be used multiple times in a row to rack up damage
fair seems like a power move
and that he is light, fast, and mobile
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm well
To start erm
Your not a n00b Toon Link boards have no n00bs
Only people that act n00bish
:D
Learn all the techs look at all the stickies
Watch vids
Read up alot on your personal bad match ups.
Example my personal bad match ups are Falco, Wolf, and Diddy Kong.
Get it?
In number reference Diddy Kong is at a disadvantage but its slim.
I have bad trouble with this match up.
But no as much since I "mained" him and infultrated Diddy Kong boards.
Learn what you as a person should do in a certin situation.
Toon Link playstyles are never the same unless you completely copy someone, are rivals with another TL, or at the beginning of developing your Toon Link.
So need any more help just ask
Hope you like it here

Thanks. So I guess Toon Link would then be a versatile character. I watched Santi's video and that was when I said, "I want Toon Link.". My friend also mains TL so it will be funny how fast I can show him up with him. I am off to go watch videos. Thanks for the help!

The first things to start with would be how to use bombs effectively (we have a thread on this called Bombing like a pro), how to use Toon link in the air and how often you should be using each move.
I'm guessing you already know how to short-hop so look at a few SH ATs while you're at it.

Lol Santi deserves the 'TL attractor' award.
Read stickies.
like mine
Kill moves are Uair, Usmash, Fair.
You can use an arrow after Short Hop fair, nair, bair, bomb throws and bomb pull(ing out) for lots of spamming.

Nair is a great approach/gimp
dsmash on angles like yoshi's island is a great gimp if it can be pulled off.
zair has "combo" potential. Especially with bomb in hand.
Fsmash has power but is very laggy be careful with it. Retreating fsmashes or falling fsmashes off the ledge are most effective.
don't use dair much unless you know you will hit or if you are above water
UpB is good for dodgers and occassionally for ledge guarding
Use the boomerang, a lot of people don't but it has a lot of potential.
Learn to DI and SDI or you will be killed at low percentages always.
Uair, Usmashes, great for killing. Hyphen smash is fun.

What is Hyphen Smash?

U-smash while running. Usually done with the c-stick apparently but me and my fast fingers just slide the control stick up to hyphen smash.

You can just run and press Up and A. >_>
Its one smooth motion. You just have to tilt your left thumb a little.
You don't have to be fast at all. <_<

Oh, I would think that would be good for getting kills. I don't know how much I should be using bombs? Should I always have one out or is it just when it's useful? Also, which projectile gets the most use?

Bombs should be used the most. Only when they're useful.

Certain opponents require you to have a bomb out all the time. These are either chaingrabbers or just so annoying that you need to have the bomb out.
I think that you should have a bomb out at most times. Most other attacks are follow ups to your projectile/zair spam.
And is TL/Marth becoming a more common pair than TL/PT?

I am a TL/Marth and my friend is a TL/Marth/Kirby. I didn't know PT works with TL. Though when I get better I might not use Marth.

Yeah I mean people playing both TL and Marth, not doubles with TL and Marth on one team.
Also bombs are pretty much the only way to beat MK's tornado, and to beat perfect shielders.

bombs are good, but can be overused. Don't fret about which projectile to use the most. I notice a lot of people who stress bombs get killed/punished in the air a lot because they will constantly be trying to grab a bomb while the enemy is trying to juggle them when an air dodge, zair, DI, nair, boomerang etc would have been much more effective.
And again, don't underestimate the boomerang. It is a great tool for herding your opponent, recovering etc. ANd usually when using a projectile, you shouldn't be using just one.
Bombs are great though for zair combos, and hyphen smash combos. But you need to figure out your style of play as toon link, and what is most effective against each of the different characters. Some characters projectile don't play a huge role. That will be up to you to decide.
Some characters you may want to have a bomb out against at all times:
Ice Climbers, Falco, DDD, and Metaknight.

I see, that helps. Sadly, at the moment my skill in this game has gone on vacation as it does like once a year and when it comes back I have most likely already gotten mad that I suck at Smash again. Hopefully I can keep playing and I won't have to take a gaming break. But that is not on topic.
I can't play TL at all. I can send a video. It will be absolutely hilarious. Hopefully we can go through my many problems and then when my skill comes back it will already be replaced by good skill.
