Welcome to the HOUSTON BRAWL THREAD! This city holds more tournaments than any other city in texas. We have the best players and the largest amount of players in this entire state!!! Plz keep this page in your favorites. There are always tournaments going down is this AWESOME city so plz check back often. I almost always have a tournament EVRY month unless things like FINALS or major holidays(christmas,thanksgiving....ect) come up. Each Houston event is called "HOBO" and it stands for Houstons Official Brawl Organization.

HOBO 15

Can you believe it? There has been 15 HOBOs(and countless other small events) in the first year of brawl!!!!! This is more than ANY of the 7 years that melee was around. This event will make Houson's Tier List change(so its very important to be here). This tournament will feature a side event: low tier 1vs1(if we have time). PLZ BRING A FULL SET-UP(wii/tv/ssbb).

WORLD HOBO

I thought I would never attend one of these........ANIME MATSURI!!!!!!!!!! If you have ever wanted to attend a tournament, now is the time! This anime convention/tournament WILL BE HUGE(we expect 250+ people) and it will be ran by MULTIPLE, experienced, delicious TO's (Xyro/TGM/Dugfin)! There are over 8 fighting game tournaments to be played at this event so please check this event out, even if you do not play Brawl. Random/neutral: Smashville, Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi Story, Pokemon Stadium 1



Counter-pick: Luigi Mansion, Frigate Orpheon, Battleship Halberd, Rainbow Cruise, Brinstar, Delfino, Castle Siege, Pirate Ship, Jungle japes, Corneria, Nofair, Yoshi island(pipes), Green Greens, Pictochat, Pokemon Stadium 2, Lylat Cruise, Port Town.


Banned: Every thing else. If both players agree to play on a banned stage....its ok

Set format (In Order of Procedure):
1. Opponents choose their characters for the first match *
2. Opponents start the stage striking procedure
3. Each player may announce one stage to be banned for counterpicks of the set
4. The first game is played, using the stage chosen during step 2
5. The loser of the previous match announces the next match's stage from either the Starter Stage List or the Counter Stage List
6. The winner of the previous match chooses their character
7. The loser of the previous match chooses their character
8. Repeat steps 5-7 for all proceeding matches
*Double blind character selection may be called for the first match

General rules:


3 Stock

7 minute timer

Items are set to "off" and "none"

All sets with the possible exception of winner's finals, loser's finals, and the championship are best of 3 matches (best of 5 and above is recommended for any "finals" matches)

In the event of a dispute, controller ports will be selected by Rock-Paper-Scissors

No player may choose a stage they have already won on in that set unless agreed upon by both players.

In team matches, the ports will be determined in a 1221 fashion; whoever wins the RPS will choose first, then the opposing team will get their ports, and then the teammate of the RPS winner will get the last port.

If the timer runs out, the victor is determined first by stock and then by percentage.

You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility, so bring an extra controller if possible and always check to make sure you're using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. If a match is to be restarted due to controller functions, it must be agreed upon by both parties.

Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.

::Banned Techs::

IC's infinite chain grab. You must release(throw away/smash away) after 5 consecutive grabs(nana grab counts towards the five).

DeDeDe's Infinite grab. You must release(throw away) after 5 consecutive grabs(mario,luigi,bowser,dk,samus,ddd).

MetaKnights cape glitch.

Infinite release grabs(marth, wario.....ect). You must release(throw away/smash) after 5 consecutive grabs.

Infinite wall grabs. You must release(throw away/smash/release to re-grab) after 5 consecutive grabs.

Bowser/Ganon suicide attacks. If these moves are used to end a match and a sudden death is then started. Bowser/ Ganon will be declared the winners.


Stalling is banned*

*Stalling: The act of deliberately avoiding any and all conflict so that one may make the game unplayable. Running away from an opponent to reach a better position is not stalling. Stalling will be permited up to 5 seconds, after that you will lose your match. Plainking is a perfect example. If i see it, you WILL lose your ENTIRE SET. No warnings! Play, dont gay.

Dugfin got a shirt and I have a navy blue shirt that has the Samus icon on the front and the brawl signature(the word "brawl" from the actual game case) on the back. Some Gamestops will be having a Smash tourney on March 9th weekend when Brawl comes out. I was TOLD that it will be Melee, but I'm thinking it will actually be Brawl. I believe it is Nintendo sponsored and free to enter. If you win the local one, you'll move on the district championships. Win the district, and you'll move onto regional. The top 8 in each region will get to go to LA for the championships. I don't know what any of the prizes are or what the ruleset will be, but it certainly is worth investigating if you have the time. At the very least, it's a free trip to LA. I believe the tournaments will be held ONLY at Gamestops that are having Midnight Openings, so check with the store nearest you for more info.

Also, be sure you guys register for the Trash Day tournament that will be taking place at UH in April. It will almost certainly be Brawl. There will be other fighting games there as well, and many OOC/OOS people usually show up...

I've been watching videos and scanning the stage boards, and here's my opinion on stuff.

Apparently the Frigate Orpheon stage may be counterpickable, because apparently they give you a warning or something right before the stage rotates.

I heard that Pictochat may be a counterpick in the vein of how PokeFloats was for Melee. Strange, with a lot of stuff going on, but playable.

Pokemon Stadium should no longer be a random neutral pick, but a counterpick. Even though some characters can neutral A infinite, the stage changes a lot, so you'll be able to get out of it, IF YOU SUCK ENOUGH TO GET CAUGHT IN THE LITTLE HOLE IT MAKES ON THE GROUND (?) THEMED POTION OF THE STAGE!!! Pokemon Stadium 2 is a definite ban though.

Angel World could cause a big problem for characters that rely on tether recoveries (ZSS, Ivysaur, Olimar) because of the destructability of the platforms.

Luigi's Mansion seems perfectly fine to me.

Other than that, I don't feel like remembering any of the other controversial stages right now, and typing more opinion here. Because this is the internet, where nobody cares about anyone elses opinion.

Also, Jake, you need to turn your Government textbook in to the book room, apparently. You were on this big list that Doc Savage had in class today.

Now for stages, i have seen the threads on what levels should be legal and which one should not. I agree with some and i disagree with some.

BUT!

there are some things tha need to be taken ito account. Most characers can get back to the stage with thier 2nd jump. ive notice 3rd jumps are rarly used. 2ndly, almost every stage now has some sort of enviormental harzard, i banned the ones that have EXTREME hazard(norfair comes o mind) but the others like great sea or sky world i allow becuase its not too terribly bad. Again, untill a SWF rule set is made, i think we should obey the rules set up at the top. if anybody disagrees, plz consider the 2 things a side above and tell me your piece, if im wrong, ill change it immediatly.

I really think that Bridge of Eldin, Shadow Moses, Skyworld, and Corneria should not be random stages.

Bridge of Eldin is pretty much just FD except alot bigger, minus the need to recover, and added in stage hazards with the King Moblin dude and the bombs. Definatly wouldn't put a ban on it, but its too strange a stage to be neutral.

Shadow Moses' walls really screw up matches...until you break them people can live for forever (unless you're a char that has a good off the top kill, which i could see being really unfair to those without it), and from what i've heard you can infinite people against the walls with rapid A attacks, and no DI or anything else will get you out of it. Plus, no edge, so recovery is again not there.

Skyworld is alright, except for the weird platforms. Being able to bounce people off the bottom of the top platform is weird. The whole not being able to tether to the edge when the spot is broken is a big disadvantage for the chars that rely on it. And if fox's downthrow can still throw down through clouds like he can on the 64 yoshi's stage, a downthrow at any % could possibly be a free stock for fox, as long as the platforms broken.

And Corneria...come on, its corneria. Fin whoring, camping, low ceiling, its just a not neutral stage in general. And if you don't think you can't camp on here. check out some of Simna's vids of his ness on this stage, its rediculous.

I think that Delfino Plaza and the Frigate Orpheon shouldn't be on random either, just because they're weird, and we don't need that many random stages.


Pokemon Stadium 2 should be either a counter pick or banned, IMO. The ice sliding/conveyer belts/air floatiness really screws with play.

I think Norfair could be a counterpick. The lava is an issue, but it is on brinstar too, and it never got banned.

Castle Siege seems like it could be a good counterpick. Maybe even a random, but i imagine a good amount of people would disagree with that.

I dunno about the rest of the stages.

All the other levels in the game...they have some sort of element that can interfere with gameplay, which goes against the definition of being neutral.

I disagree with Spear Pillar and Halberd simply because they both contain elements that interfere with gameplay. Halberd has the laser cannon and the cannonballs, while Spear Pillar has the random attacks by the Pokemon and the stage tilts every so often. These could be counter-picks, but not neutral.

As for stages that have any sort of wall...it could be a while before a decision can be made whether they should be banned or not because of infinites due to jabs/Shine.

I still suggest three stocks for the time being. Since the game is still new to everyone, the average match takes a minimum of four minutes or so. Later on, it can be changed to four if needed. It's either that, or tournaments may have to start three hours early than usual...

Any possible input from people who have the game *coughJeremycough* would help.

For once I agree with you. Will me and Mr.3000 sat and played for about 4 hours...we started to notice something right off the back. We would play with rotating controller (not just winners) so everyone had a chance to play, but anyways we noticed that the wait time was TOO MUCH... image watching a link ditto from melee on dream land. All the matches took FOREVER(understatement) so we wanted to drop the stock count down to three. If you put a time limit on you only influence people who camp or "bait" you for the remainder of the match... long story short, drop the stock to 3...for now atleast... when people discover those easy/cheap kills I.E shine, I guess we can raise the stock... but Im sure all of you just watching matches on youtube you have an idea of how long these matches are...
