How do the popups at Smash World affect your visit?

I take popups very seriously! When there is a popup I usually click on it! (it helps swf I think)

I voted: They aren't too bad and I can deal with them as long as they keep Smash Boards alive!
I've seen much worse. So many popups at some other place that my browser turned off.

please tell me you aren't really using any of your college money...

They aren't that bad, at least you don't have more than 5 popups/ page.

There's nothing wrong with pop-ups guys. Hopefully having to close each window isn't the most effort exerting activity you do all day....

Vote for #2!

This is ridiculous Gid! Stop worrying what people think of the pop-ups. If they don't like it, too bad for them.

The pop-ups need to stay, end of discussion! They help fund SWF, and I don't think anyone would want you to dish out additional, unnecessary money.

So please stop worrying about all of us, they need to stay to help keep the forums alive.

They're not unbearable.

Pop-up ads are THE WORST thing about the internet, simply because unlike hackers and viruses, while not comparable to the damage they do, pop-up ads provide a steady, daily assault on everyone that goes on the internet. It's not hard to click them away, but when you start typing something and then BAM! an ad appears, that is beyond irritating. I don't really think you should have to pay with your college money, but I'm sure there's other ways to support this site that are just as effective. There was already a topic about this that had a few good ideas..
[edit] hey- someone else picked #3, guess I'm not alone in my opinion

Truly Gideon, you are a good man. You are probably tired of Smashboards, but you continue to spend your money on it so others mey have fun. It's a very selfless and kind thing. If only there was an award to give you.

I thought the first and third options wre a bit humorous. Really though, I don't like popups and they probably hate me, but I'll deal with them so long as smashboards is in existence. Popups are a distraction at lots of sites, and I like the ones that are up now more than the previous ones. The Porn N' Chicken one got on my nerves but I only had to see it for one day.

The Ads are Fine and so is Smashboards. No worries.:)

pop ups, I can live with, frankly, they do affect my SWF visit, frankly, I dont think anybody will really care, just dont want an overload of popups, if you keep it like this, nobody will complain, its just that some people might get annoying ads, they might get tired of closing ads, or something like that, but I have to agree with TBC, if you dont like the popups, who CARES!!! Gid, its ur decision, if it keeps SWF alive, keep the pop ups

i voted that they keep me happy (or something like that) the first one.

i luv that mr green one. selecting different weapons and stuff. also, i like the fact they have different questions in the ad about the gost boat thing. i really like these ones. these should be keepers.

dont know about you guys, but I will keep visiting these boards until I am bored of smash, but when you think about it, these ads really affect your visit, you try and press the back button, and it goes back to the ad you just closed. These forums are awesome but you shouldn't have to survive through all these ads, I think about 1 ad per page is good. I hope you dont need to spend ur college money gideon, but maybe you should use the donated money to remove the SWF ads, theres a program where for 12 bucks, you can get like 1,000 ad free pages

They should stay, they really help Gid pay for this cra- err, boards ;).

Dealing with them ain't that hard. I usually get used to waiting for a pop-up appear when I post. Then, I click here, type, post, then close it.

I hope that helps anyway, do I have to click on it?

I'm fine with pop-ups. All I ask is you do your best to eliminate multi-window popups, popups that load a page when you close them, pop-ups with sound, pop-ups that attempt to install something on my computer, and full-screen pop-ups. Like that obnoxious blowsearch one that ends up opening 2 separate full-screen ads, a window that tries to install something, a regular window, can't be closed simply by right-clicking on the taskbar icon and selecting "close", and open a new window when closed. All they would need would be sound to be the perfect example of a BAD popup.

I'm in agreement with BBT, as long as the ads arn't offencive (ads that sell illeagle steriods) or just plain annoying (Gator, blowsearch, and digipet) I'll live with the ads just don't let them get annoying or offencive. :shyguy: :beezo:

I can deal with the pop-ups. The only ones that really tick me off are, like Bee said, the ones with sound. I open up my playlist in Winamp when I'm surfing the internet (98% of my time on the internet is this website ;)), and listen to music. However, whenever I start getting pop-ups with sounds (such as the "Porn n' Chicken advertisement), it can really disrupt my music. I have a cable modem which means that even sound pop-ups are open and running in a matter of seconds. So if I'm not ready to close it as I enter a page, the pop-up will start up and I end up hurting my ears (I play my music loud). As long as there are no sound pop-ups, they're fine with me. It's kind of annoying to close them, yeah, but you have to learn to put up with annoying stuff in your life.

The pop-ups don't realy bug me. To me it seems reasonable Gid has to do whatever he can to keep the place running. After all, a forum with pop-ups isn't as bad as no forum at all.

But they seem te be very infrequent. Sometimes I don't see a pop-up for hours and other times I get one every time a new page opens. Also, I've seen some Dutch pop-ups :D (I've got a Dutch broswer so the ad system can detect my language)

It's so weird, but I don't have anti-popup programs and I don't get any pop-ups on my computer only! When I go on on other computers, there's only one popup per page, it's not too annoying. I don't click on the popups; should I?

Gideon
10-20-2002, 12:57 PM
Yes, clicking on popups really helps us out.

Any jerk who voted against popups deserves to be burned at the stake ;) .

Seriously guys, they don't bother me in the LEAST bit, I just forget about them, and sooner than later they are closed or disappear. If they keep SMF alive, keep them, that was my vote.....

Actually Gid, I suggest you get (or try to get) the Shoot the ducks banner back. That was fun. Also shock the monkey, punch the monky, and shoot the bunny! Those are fun hehe!

Sorry to sound mad but, I really REALLY hate this new "Reign of Fire" ad. Every time it pops up it's always in the far bottom right hand corner of my computer (offscreen which makes it 10x as annoying) Could you find a way to keep that ad in the center of the screen (such as infront of the web page instead of hidden deep in a corner making strange sounds) I would really appreciate it if you did something about that ad. :shyguy: :beezo:

Gideon
10-25-2002, 06:44 AM
I don't think you guys understand about ads... I don't put them on Smash World... I submit to an Advertising party who puts directs ads to my compaign. They decide where they go, etc. Then the advertising company and us split revnues.

So its not like I can choose exact ads to displlay and where.

And BTW, this isn't a topic to post complains, its a topic to vote... The Reign of Terror campaign is one of the first ads that is relevent to this site (its actually a video game ad) so you can at least be thank ful for that =/

I'm doing my best....

Phill, that's really just browser-independent. Some popups can resize/relocate themselves, but so long as you keep moving the pop up, eventually it will start to relocate.
Try right clicking its window on your taskbar and choose "move." Should work after a few times.

Well..Pop-ups arent my life or bring pleasure or anything, but I do click on them to help SWF stay alive, I saved up money to donate once, and I think I might need to do it agian..Gid, isnt there a vBulletin option to make it so that you have to pay to register?

These popups aren't big or annoying.I can deal with them.I know they are keeping SWF alive.

10-26-2002, 01:20 PM
They don't bug me the least bit but the "BAM! - Reign--" (I can't see the rest on my desktop=/) one never will show up on the screen and it takes about 10 seconds to close, just thought I'd say that. I also have the same little problem as McNine, I am usually listening to music pretty darn loud while browsing the web and the sound pop ups for 1 scare me and secondly are just plain annoying.

Well anyways, I don't mind them at all so I voted for the 1st choice.

Ticadrius
10-27-2002, 11:58 PM
Yeh, the ones with sound are very irritating, and I have a similiar issue as with McFox and CSHD, but I can live with it. There is some irony in all this, too. I mean, pop-ups for pop-up elimintaing software? That's quite....ironic....for lack of a better term and abundance of redundance....

The maintenence of the boards is the first priority, and if popups are what's necessary for that, I'm for them. I can live with/without them. I click 'em a bit to help out the cause, and we know we need the help, so keep on popping on, my popiddies!

The BAM one is advertising a game that will be for gamecube, Playstation, and XBox - "Reign of Fire"

The reaons its not coming up on your screen is because you don't haev the right media player...

Be thankful you don't have the right media player, this one is the one that you DON'T want! It's kinda like the old "blowsearch" one, that hides down in the corner and makes your screen all misaligned.

If there is any one you can get rid of Gid, make it the "Reign of Fire" one. Just replace it with something else that doesn't go to the bottom of the browser. Because sound and annoyance are a double whammy.

If you can't change it, that's fine. I think we can all live :) .......

We can also try bringing back the kill the little green eye staring intently at you ad.

Seriously, I think that the Reign of Fire ad does count as an ad with sound, which Lucca hates. But, it promotes a game of a movie-that-I-want-to-see-but-haven't-yet.

Anyway, a VeriSign banner has sound, it appears at the top and is kinda irritating. I should get a pic.

Gideon
10-28-2002, 06:26 PM
Actually, if you have the right software the reign of fire was is quite a convinient popup. It pops up ina small window and is easy to see. I dont know what you guys are talking about when you say it HIDES in the corner...

and BTW this is not a complaining topic, please stop telling me to take off such and such ads. I do my best. Express your complaints by VOTING only please =/

I just got a pop-up stopper, I hardly notice the pop ups :)

They arn't even that bad though, That one for pepsi green or whatever. I clicked that every time it poped up when I was in school.

Some of them really slow down an old computer though.

Yoshi
10-31-2002, 06:08 PM
The popup's aren't bad and all, but they get me so annoyied. They freeze, and create an "illegial opperation" on my computer and ****. so I voted on that I can live with them, or whatever choice 3 was. :P

Craftstar
10-31-2002, 06:53 PM
Keep them if you need too, nothing I can't handle. If this site ever should need to be closed down, I'd probably buy the URL and put up new forums for all the out-of-forums people, but I hope things never have to be like that (someone else would probably get the domain first anyways.) As for donating cash, I would if I could :(.

Gid, look at the votes, 8 people love them, 63 people have nothing against the pop-up ads, 8 highly dislike them, and only 3 dont want to visit SWF if this continues (at least it was like this last time I checked). I think you can keep the ads.

Gideon
11-02-2002, 10:48 AM
Once i get 100 votes I will close the topic :)

Masked
11-02-2002, 11:01 AM
Make that 64 votes for choice two :)

Only seventeen more votes to go!
