View Full Version : Ledge-Hanging Knee

I've seen Isai and other good Captain Falcon players hanging on the edge, then immediately popping up from the edge and doing a knee. Now, I've seen them do it even at higher percentages so I'm thinking that they must be letting go of the edge, then IMMEDIATELY jumping, therefore getting above the edge, and then kneeing. However I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do it, since I've seen when Isai does it he pops up a great distance above the edge... almost as though he had never been hanging from it. I've tried doing this over quite a few times and I almost never succeed in pulling off the knee, simply because my captain's jump after dropping from the ledge doesn't take me up high enough. The only time I have pulled off a knee Captain released it right before he landed on the stage, having done a mediocre jump, which was not what I was looking for. I'd appreciate if someone could clarify for me if I'm doing this correctly and give me some help regarding the ledge-hanging knee. I'd really like to master this technique because it seems to me it makes it much easier to get up from the ledge at higher percentages.

I don't play Falcon or Dorf, but I think I know what you're talking about. Just press x or y while you're hanging on the ledge to jump directly up from it.

GanondorftheXXVI: That is correct, you have to let go, jump and use the knee. It's all about timing. To get a higher jump, you have to jump sooner.

I hope you are not hitting Down, but rather away so you don't fast fall. Keep this in mind. You'd be surprised at how many people do this.

I hit down and I can do both ANA and AFA with ease. But I prefer the ANA since it's easier to hit.

Its all about timing, its like almost pressing them at the same time, just X(or Y) just after pressing down.

Or you can just press X straight from the edge and then fast fall and Knee of justice.

But you can't jump directly from the edge at higher percentages, can you? That's what makes this much more tricky (and beautiful). Anyway, thanks for the confirmations.

You can jump directly from the ledge at any percentage, though the animation's slower if your percentage is over 100. However, drop jumping is pretty much always better...

Press back instead of down. It's a lot easier to get distance that way since you're guaranteed not to fastfall. To get a lot of distance with the knee, press back, and then immediately press forward and jump into it.

There is no need to press back instead of down, you just need to make sure you don't fast fall off the edge when you press down. Just LIGHTLY TAP down then IMMEDIATELY press X or Y. You should have maximum height that way, and all it takes is practice. Remember you can do his knee, n-air, or d-air from hanging on the ledge. If you just tap down to start the attack, it makes it easier to choose which direction to press to do a specific attack, since your joystick is returned to neutral as quickly as you are pressing X or Y. I haven't yet been able to do his u-air, but I'm not sure I've tried that one too hard. Definitely his knee is easiest to do out of his "hanging edge" aerials though.

Eh. Back's still easier. You get guaranteed results every time since you never end up fastfalling. Executed correctly, you can probably achieve the same results with down, but it's just more work.

You can also press C-stick down (to drop from the ledge without fastfalling) then immediately jump (up on the joystick for me) forward and forward aerial (C-stick forward for me) then L-cancel to recover quickly (R for me)!!!

The only danger with doing this with the C-stick is the chance of doing it to quickly and pressing C-stick down twice (too fast) and falling then immediately down aerialing to your death!!!

So make sure you jump before you hit C-stick in any direction again!!!

There's always the option of u-air, the range on that move is great and can be followed up by a good few moves due to it's limited knockback if non-sweet spotted.

I'm quite partial to drop jump to triangle jump and grab though. Just make sure you don't air dodge till you're above the edge.

Drop jump to wd is fun too, though definitely a little riskier.

If you are going for the edge hog you can trick them and edge hog early.....then when they try to up B over you or hit you out of it (Fox) just drop down then jump back up and down aerial (C-stick down) as you come onto the ledge!!!

You are basically going from an edge hog immediately to a spike (meteor)!!!

Works wonders with Marth and his non meteor cancellable spike!!!

Anotehr tricky, but worthwhile edgeguard, involving the knee, is to hang from the edge, then drop, jump, smash away (from Final) and you'll do the wall jump, as you do, knee asap. Intercepting at that distance, with that move, kills anyone. Hard to do, but looks cool. ^^ Theres just enough room to up-B back.
