View Full Version : Be aggressive with Doc?
The Game II

After trying a few characters and losing tons of head-to-head matches against my friends, I've found a liking toward the medical wonderboy because I've worked best with him.
Reading the other threads on combos have helped. But I'm trying to create a plan of attack.
Should I be aggressive with Doctor Mario and rush attack like crazy? Or, should I be passive, spread the field and pill spam as much as possible?
If I play an aggressive game, is it best to switch to Mario, who is faster?
Just so you know how I play: Against my friends, I play a passive game; almost turtleish, but I attack when my opponent attacks. If they take 7 percent, I try to take 8 percent. I'll AAA and back out a lot. I really like to eat clock and keep the match close with the hope that if it comes down to a smash, I'll hit it.
And, I'll pill spam against anyone except Fox (then I'll white sheet Fox's lasers).
Thanks for any help.

Be both. If your opponent is getting a little aggressive, get defensive, then when they slip up, let them have it with everything you can throw...

If you're using Doc, use the AAA combo sparingly. From what I can tell it's one of the slowest jab cross kick combos in the game, check it out compared to Mario's.
When I play as Doc, my style varies too. Obviously when I'm at high damage I keep my distance and pill spam. When it's lower I go crazy. I almost always use a pill for my first few approaches. If they shield, I land and grab during their stun. If they dodge, I land and punish. If they roll, confrontation reset. If they WD, they usually still have the pill to deal with anyway. Eventually they'll figure out something, which is where I resort to fakeouts. Jump in but wait on the pill, and so on.
Also, use the stage to your advantages. On, say, Corneria, you can stand so that your pills go really fast or in unpredictable directions.
"I really like to eat clock and keep the match close with the hope that if it comes down to a smash, I'll hit it."
That's not the greatest idea with Doc. His upsmash is not that powerful, his forward has pitiful range. His down is pretty good, it can even clank and outprioritize Peach's. But most other characters have something to combat it.

At the start of the round, it depends. If it's FD I rather head towards them.
If it's anywhere else (with projectile coverage) I tend to charge with a SHFF Pill spam.
But as for the match, I prefer an aggressive style. I constantly look for times to strike. I say all Docs should be playing aggressive while doing a lot of evasive wavedashes, then focusing on defense when the patients giving the physician trouble.
It's my style of play, but normally I find I play aggressive more than i should, and Doc is one of my favorite characters to get aggressive with.
I approach with pill spams, and usually try and trick them into something and start a combo, always rackign up damage, and using the d-throw and u-throw a lot to keep them ready for a good combo.
When you get to the higher damage, I like to keep pressure on, but tighten up my gameplay. By this I mean make every move count, and have no move out of line. It's liek a very reserved aggressive style.
Hope it Helps

One of the main Doc strats is to pill rush (short hop, pill, fast fall, repeat as needed) your opponent and while they're stunned for a second attack. Against people who don't play much you can usually just juggle them with running A attacks and uair/bair.
It all depends on your skill relative to your opponent's. If you're better then use annoying tactics to wear him/her down and hit them with powerful attacks. If they're better then dodge their attacks and wack them during any lag time there may be.
Hopefully everything I just said ment something and wasn't complete idiocy....

Most of the people I play against are (a lot) better than me; and yes, I roll like crazy waiting for an opening. I'm usually waiting for my opponent to try their attacks before I try mine.
I'm wondering whether I should make a rush attack or two before they try to attack. Just by what I've read, it sounds like it is possible, but there's some downsides to it.
I'll try different types of aggressiveness tomorrow when my friends and I meet up.

I think it depends on whom you're fighting. I play against a pretty good Peach, and tend to play a defensive pill spam against her.
I hate her D-Smash and has to stay out of her way when facing her, wavedashing a lot and following up with smashes.
Against Marth, I have to play semi-offensive. I use lots of pills search for an opening where he blocks the pill and you can get in a hit. Against other character, I'm offensive as **** since I believe the good doctor to be pretty good against fast characters. I don't know why, but I have far bigger problems against slower characters than I have with speed maniacs. Just rush'em, you're heavier and deals more damage, so go for eye-for-an-eye, you'll hit them harder.

well...how to play goes hand in hand w/ ur playing style...there is not 'perfect way to play'...Mike, the little-argued best Doc player...doesn't even pillspam..like either he cant' find time w/ high level aggressvie players, or he simply doesn't know how to do it correctly, lol
i mean...w/ that said, i can confidently say my pill game is better than his...because thats all i really focused w/ doc, at first...and my friends will tell you, its annoying, when u know how to pill,sh,& wd together in unisance ~___~
but, it appears Mike is alot more reliant on SH Docpunches...going RIGHT over enemy attacks...thats something i'm not comfortable yet, doing at even half his rate of attempts..but i'm still perfectly fine, w/ my much more defensive style doc.
but..the stage makes a big dif too!!..example, i'm going to piss u off on FD,corneria, ect...but on Fountain of Dreams...i practically lose my whole pill game...so in that scenario..my doc game gets ALOT weaker...and i concentrate on more, SHs especially reverse backkick, and spamming down smash, even mroe than i normally do.
but...as "aggressive" and "passive" go...i'd agree ur oponent changes that somewhat, too..but even in my best pillspam..if theres an opening...like an oponent stopped moving forward in a weak spam, i'm gonna quickly dash jump-aerial pill, and land ready to downsmash if the pill hit them...of grab if they shield.

Yeah I don't really pill spam, I just go BFD (back feet doc) and throw in some of the generic combos
