In case you haven't seen already...

Captain Jack posted four videos of Domo, an IC player from Japan. He faces off against two Docs, a Fox, and a mean Luigi:

http://captainjack.jp/maji2-2.html#20050413

The last video (vs. Josef, a Fox) is particularly interesting... never really thought you could chainthrow with Ice Block . Domo is quite good overall, and has really good control over Nana. Check it out if you haven't!

i really wasn't feeling those videos...my suspicions that Doc is sort of a counter for IC were true.

Edit: correction..that fox video was pretty sweet.

I saw a few things in these videos I found -very- interesting...

Desyncing from a fast fall:

This one is a pain to duplicate, so I have amazing respect for that player because he did it on many occations flawlessly. Basically, if you fast fall, you can tap B and get popo to pop back in the air slightly doing an ice cube, while nana fails to follow because she gets stuck in the land animation. This is probably the fastest and safest way I've seen to go into a desync, but also the hardest.

Desync from dash dance:

A little easier to do, but also slightly unreliable because nana sometimes won't follow in the proper way. I'm not certain of the exact timing on this, but if you can have nana turning to face the same direction as popo while he's in the dash skid animation, then you may be able to pull off a move with just nana. Blizzard is the only one I've done successfully so far, but I'm still working on it.

The Nana Pult!

This one has a lot of potential, and I think it could prove to be a decent way to clear samus missiles while buying time to close in. While desynced... nana must be free while popo is doing something. Enter the commands for jumping and blizzard as fast as you can and nana should sail forward and land into a blizzard. Mess up and nana will jump uselessly in front of you and land doing nothing.

Those particular techs stood out to me because of the potential they have for mind games, combo openers, and in general speeding up their play.

what is desyncing?

nevermind(just read topic below)

He's very good but all those matches I was think why wasn't he trying to do the inf? Maybe he was just trying to see ow he could play w/o it?

I personally like to spot dodge after a dash dance. Usually if you do it right he will leave nana behind for a second. I just learned a lot about desynching yesterday since me and my friend were playing around with our alternate characters.

Since this is a Japanese video, he probably wasn't allowed to do the infinite. I'm actually surprised he pulled a chain throw on fox, because I was under the impression they just... didn't... chain throw in japan.

how do you do the infinite anyway? every vid i see dosen't give me a clear picture of what nana is doing.

You need to get nana alternating a forward or down tilt with popo's grab attack. I find down easier to use because my thumb has trouble holding a steady foward to keep her tilting in place.

In a normal match, you're probably not going to have enough time to set up an infinite until at -least- 30% damage on your opponent, simply because Nana has a bad habbit of lagging herself after you've grabbed someone, and people can escape well before she can even begin to tilt.

By the time they're up to 80%, if you get them in a grab, you probably have a fairly easy way to KO them... why bother doing the infinite then?

If you can play the climbers well enough to capture someone in an infinite, then I can bet you have enough skill to use some combos that lead to a finisher much quicker then trying to infinite to well over 400% before a tilt will KO them even as they get to escape it. :\ Just because you can get their damage high, doesn't mean you'll be able to actually finish the job before they get you.

Nice Shi* yo. I learned this my first try. i'll be using this all the time

Oh can someone tell me how most of the things domo does is done. for instance like in the fox match fox is returing to the stage with firefox and domo has nana jump out and use the bilzzard while popo waits for fox and evenually bairs him. thats not the only thing but, it's just an example.so if anyone can explain how some of this is done i would appreiate it.

Check my first post in this thread, I explained 2 less common ways of desyncing I noticed.

Also above, the 'Nana Pult' for lack of a better quick way to describe it. He desynced her into a jumping blizzard.

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in his play aside from that. He shuffl'd a lot of back airs, blizzards, land desync, and occationally a forward air. Ice cubes were also used as a mind game to try and set up combos, but fox rarely fell for it.

I got a question about desynching in this video...

After Domo kills fox with the grab to f-smash, he taunts once regularly, but he is then able to taunt again with only nana doing it...

I didn't see him spot dodge or anything... Is this another way of desynching by double taunting?

i have no idea, but sometimes nana just taunts on her own >.>

Just hold the taunt button... both will taunt once, then Nana will continue to taunt so long as the button is held down.

infinite is lamez and unreliable --; no one uses it in tournies, no gooD iC"s at least.

nfinite is lamez and unreliable

how is it unreliable? I only use it when I'm seriously outmatched since it does take alot away from the game, but for me its almost always an instant kill.

Besides... against someone that -really- knows what they're doing, grabs where nana is actually still with you and able to sync into an infinite are going to be about as rare as getting hit by lightning.

Climbers don't even shield grab very well because most hits knock them back to far thanks to their poor traction (I wouldn't trade that traction for the world though... lord they're slow without that wavedash)

So desynching from a fast fall. How high was his jump? did he do a full jump or short hop? I can do the one from full jump pretty consistently, but i cannot do it from short hop...I'm wondering if its possible from short hop. I'd download the videos myself, but my connection is crap. Thanks in advance. I've also found a few new interesting things... which ones do i want to write about?

Well numbero un: Desynching appears to be possible from wavelanding, as in popo is the only one who will ever waveland when done correctly. I dont know about practical application, because it just separates your ice climbers by quite a large distance.
Numbero deux: The desynching by wavelanding appears to be the same timing for the desynching by fast fall.
Numbero trois: Desynching by fast fall can be done by using the double jump instead of the ice block, again though practical application is tough to figure for me.
Numbero quatre: Ok this one is not all me, the dysynching technique used is one that i learned on the boards from someone i would love to give credit to, but cant remember the name of, so post and take your credit where its due. But the deal here is to use any a attack followed by an over b, done properly only popo does the over b. Now when doing this start the over b with one direction of the joystick, and hold the other way once its begun, meaning nana wants to look forward, but is being pulled backwards. The animation the game has to try and compensate for this impossibility is quite enjoyable. But more importantly, this makes it possible to continue the barrage upon the person youre attacking, because nana is still facing "towards" them. Meaning you can smash, blizzard and grab afterwards or any other option. Basically meaning a theoretical combo would be neutral a, over b with just popo, blizzard with nana, grab with popo, into grab combo from below the grave... did that one make sense?
numbero cinq: You can do the repetitive taunt priciple with holding up on the joystick(nana short hops a bunch) and with holding z (popo puts up the shield, but nana continues to try to grab)
there's also a numbero six, which is probably more useful than any of these other suggestions, but I'm going to work on it more before I share. Other than that one, I think i shared everything I've found. As of now that is. More on number 6 later.

Disclaimer-- Assume all descriptions of doing stuff with the icy's in this post are in the original color(popo blue, nana pink)
Where are all the icy's players? Last time i checked there wasnt a single player on smashfinder that mained as icy's. Maybe an Icy finder is needed... Is there anyone else who visits this room often? besides freely and me that is? Or is freely just the only one who responds? For a character as cool as the ice climbers, their room sure isnt very active... hypothermia perhaps?

Captain Jack took most of his videos down for bandwidth reasons. I have all of the IC ones, so I'll see about hosting them somewhere.

Alright, here you go (http://www.csc.calpoly.edu/~nterrell/domo_ics.zip). I reserve the right to remove the file if my school yells at me for bandwidth abuse :).

those are awesome, thanks! Can you host any other vids of any other characters? I will check them quickly and download them so you won't have to keep them on the university's server for long?

You'll have to be more specific than that ;).
