How often do you use them? I'd like to think that they have some esoteric application that makes them handy, but all evidence points to 'no.' Let's investigate...

Up Smash -

pros:
- Good vert-kill power.

cons:
- Start up lag.
- Wind down lag.
- Small hitbox.
- Not as good or only slightly more powerful than f-smash.

Personally, I never use this except as a very rare stagger tactic to mix things up.

Down Smash -

pros:
- Quick, especially with C-stick.
- Better range than f-smash.
- Covers both sides simultaneously.

cons:
- If it isn't sweetspotted, it sucks and leaves GAW wide open for anything.
- Must be used only when enemy is at moderate/higher percents.
- Not that powerful.
- Crappy trajectory considering that GAW already has two up-sending smashes.

Personally, I think this move has more potential than people lend it. It is actually a good surprise move against a Samus or Peach. I barely use it though. Maybe once every few matches.

Anyway, I think GAW's up and down smashes are overshadowed by his d-tilt and f-smash, the former being quicker with better vert-kill power and the latter being easier to utilize and with more knockback.

I never use usmash unless I mess up a utilt.

As for dsmash I never use it since match or wd back > match is a lot better.

lets see, the down smash is usable as it is pretty quick and if you can time it right, you can get another one out even quicker.

I only use the up smash if i just so happen to break a jiggly's shield at thirty five percent or something obscure like that.

I never use the d-smash as it sucks and the upward smash is very rarely used by me. D-tilt and Forward smash are so much better.

This is a minor discovery, but it may be worth something...

I was fighting my friend's Samus at FD as Game & Watch. I knocked him off and he grapple recovered. I d-smashed at the edge, the sweetspot of the hammer being right out off the side. Samus bounced up a little bit from the grapple recovery and that little tiny bit of vulnerability let my d-smash hit him and he died at a rather low percent (he didn't see it coming and didn't bother to DI at all).

Oh well. Mostly a useless move, but I will throw it into the pot every once in a while to punish rolls or if a miss a d-tilt (turned around). It comes fast out of a d-tilt.
