View Full Version : Short Hop Reverse Giant Punch Cancel to Bair (question)

All characters wave the ability to change direction while doing a neutral B attack in the air (short-hopped reverse lasers, reverse Falcon Punch, Reverse Needle Cancel, etc...)

In addition to being able to turn around and Giant Punch in the opposite direction (while in the air), DK can also cancel his charging animation by pressing L or R (Giant Punch Cancel)

Put these two things together and DK can use a "Reverse Giant Punch Cancel" to turn around in the air and then attack with any aerial move.

*The above is common knowledge...

If you are fast enough, you can do a "reverse Giant Punch Cancel" within a short hop and still have enough hangtime to do a Bair in the direction you were just facing. (Short Hop Reverse Giant Punch Cancel to Bair) The advantage of being able to use this technique would give DK the option of substituting a bair for a fair while short hopping and facing his opponent.

I am not sure if this technique has been discovered yet or not (i'm sure it has been though). My reason for making this topic is because I have been having trouble cancelling my Giant Punch quickly enough to give me enough time to get the bair in. Sometimes i'll press R too quickly after charging with B, and the game won't recognize that I cancelled the Giant Punch. Other times when I use the same timing it will work fine.

I guess the main question of this topic is: Is there a way to cancel DK's Giant Punch quickly and consistently enough to make "Short Hop Reverse Giant Punch Cancel to Bairs" a practical DK technique?

Using the Charge has many uses.

A while ago Thomas Tipman discovered you can do an instant edgehog by running off the stage and Instant Charge Cancelling. Captain Jack uses it to turn around as he jumps off the edge to edgeguard. AOB and Mike do it.... pretty much any decent DK.

I use it to approach..... You can SH towards an opponent while charging. From here you can cancel and wavedash land or try out other mindgames or whatever.

So yes Noob_Lube this technique has a lot of practical application. As for using it to B-air....... well it has potential for mindgames and it does sort of give DK an approaching move.....the trouble is that it will be hard to time and its not a very flexible technique.

You can cancel the charge before DK even swings his arm once, so yes it is possible to do. I can see it being useful out of a dashdance possibly. If it is useful it wouldnt become a huge part of Dks game as it would start to get predictable. Its a nifty little 'trick' i guess. Im the kind of player who likes to randomlly throw in a Forward B or some random tech so i reckon this is kind of cool.

I'll certainly try it out

peace out

obviously i use the charge to turn around all the time, but only full jumps. i think it's probably possible to turn around and backair in a short hop, but i certainly don't have the tech skill to do it.

plus, i think when you try to play DK fast you are going in the wrong direction.

lol thanks for the advice AOB.

I've been trying to get this down for so long but i just gave up on it since it is too hard to cancel the reverse giant punch quickly enough, or consistently enough to slip in the bair. Oh well.
