You are either pressing L or R too late or you are holding it too long. Regardless of which it is you just need to let go earlier. Practice, Practice, Practice!

No, he got it down pretty well. Hold it down very lightly, and try to release it very quickly like the short hop. If your pressing it very lightly and very quickly and the shield still comes up, you're pressing the button too late.

Practice.

There's no such thing as Lcancelling late really. If you press it before you hit the ground it still Lcancels, and if you press it while landing the lag will decrease on the frame you press L. Any other part of the attack and nothing will happen.

are tou sure cuz when i do hit it late, my falco does the full motion of recovery, no speed up in the lag at all!

The problem most likely that your suffering from is that you are holding L rather than hitting at the precise time(before you hit the ground). If you hold L or R you'll most likely l cancel, but your shield will come up, just learn the proper timing and instead of holding it try tapping it, look at it kind of like short hopping.

you don't need to press the l/r button all the way down to l-cancel, either, just depress it slightly and let go quickly. the timing is accurate to a 1/15th second, so just get a feeling for how much time you have before your character hits the ground.

does the timing change when you hit a character doing dair?

it can depending on if you hit them or not cause when you hit them your characters fall will lag a bit and take longer to hit the ground so sometimes this can throw your l cancel off.

There's 3 different timings, if you miss, if you hit them, and when you hit their shield. You have to wait to hit L or R a little later in that order. (Missing is the earliest, hitting shields are the slowest)

There's a LOT of different timing; if you hit them, it depends on which character and where you hit them; if you hit the shield, it depends on size of the shield (and lightshield or not) and where you hit the shield. Difference is very small but still significat sometimes.

If you don't do it already, you can use the other shoulder button for L-canceling.

It's worked for me. Because I wavedash/shield with R, I'm used to press it fully down. So when I started training L-canceling, I always pressed R too far and shielded.
But I never used L for anything, so it's "natural" to press it lightly, lightly enough to L-cancel (and big shield, but that's wrong timing).
