ok...I dont really understand jump canceling, is it just jumping and then doing a quick grab? That is one i've heard but for suggestions from people in other threads i dont understand how a JC would seem very practical in some combos...please clarify if I'm right on what a jump cancel is.

Your right about JC, as in grabs but you can also JC shines, doing double shines(advanced skill that takes fast fingers). you can also perform JCed U-smashes, which is very useful for characters like fox.

It's important to realize that Falco crouches before jumping, and is considered on the ground during this time. The best way to acknowledge this fact is by pausing the game quickly after pressing the jump button.
Jump cancel - Stopping yourself from leaving the ground during the 6 frames of Falco crouching before he jumps.
The manner in which you do this however varies.
Jump cancelled shine
Cancelling your shine with your jump. The wording of this is confusing because it's really your shine that is being cancelled BY the jump. Your jump is not being cancelled.
Jump cancelling your shield<- not really a term
Jumping out of your shield. Again, your shield is being cancelled by the jump not vice versa.
Jump cancelled upsmash
Running and doing a sliding upsmash. This is the best example but people may refer to to the next one as a jump cancelled upsmash as well. When you run, you can jump. When you're crouching and preparing for the jump, you slide a little bit (it's more noticeable with fox). during the crouching period if you upsmash, the little crouch will be overridden by the upsmash but the sliding affect will remain.
I don't like calling the running upsmash a jumpcancelled upsmash because I really don't see the point in complicating terms even if it might be more accurate.
Shield cancelled upsmash <-aka Jump cancelled upsmash
Upsmashing instantly out of your shield. Cancel your shield with your jump by pressing up on the control stick, and your jump with your upsmash. To cancel your shield and then your jump with your upsmash you either need to press up(jump)+upA(smash) 5 frames in succession, or much simply press the control stick and then the cstick up 5 frames apart.
Jump cancelled grab
Same concept as the running upsmash, but replace the smash with a grab. When you jump out of your run, the game considers you to be in the standing position while you are still sliding. This is the advantageous concept that the jc grab employs. Run, then jump, then grab. The run and jump will make you slide and the jump will allow you to preform a standing grab while sliding forward. Most players find that since you can cancel the jump in practically one frame, pressing X/Y+Z almost simultaneously lets them JC grab effectively. With Falco the lag of the grab is reduced, the range is increased, and he grabs earlier than a dash grab. Learn to JC grab all the time with most of the characters.
Jump cancelled shine
Cancelling your jump with your shine. Jump in place, and in 5 frames or so press down B. I'm not really sure why, but the game thinks you are still on the ground when you do this properly. Jumpcancelled shines are useless and actually more inneficient if you are just trying to shine someone. However, since you can jump OUT of your shines (jump cancelled shines, great wording >_>) and then cancel your jump with this move you can shine repeatedly with only 5 frames of vulnerability between the shines. In a perfect world maybe; Go try it to see how hard it is to do consistently. There isn't really a good strategy for this move since it is so difficult, but you can either use the control stick to jump out of the shine and then shine again (like a perpendicular dash dance) or you can use a jump button and slide your fingers very fast.
As you can see, Jump cancelled shine means two completely different things. Usually users on this board refer to jump cancelled shines as cancelling your shine with your jump, but you should be aware of the double meaning.
Terminology blows sometimes.

and that takes care of everything. ^_^b
(also note that cancelling your jump with a shine involves shining at EXACTLY the right frame, whereas cancelling your jump with a grab or a usmash has a small window that makes it much easier.)
