Back when the announcement was first made about SSB3, when all there was to do was spam speculation after speculation almost until it was as plentiful as the air we breathe, there were several suggestions on sites like this and in magazines that Nintendo might include new franchise chars in SSB3, and there are certainly new franchises that could be utilized for this. It's been pointed out (many times) how Marth and Roy's inclusion helped pave the way for FE in the US, and how this could help new franchises as well. I was actually going to start this with Project H.A.M.M.E.R., who would be a perfect candidate for making more variety in Smash, then after searching I saw that there was a thread on that already; but this thread is supposed be for all new franchises, and new franchises only. And before anyone posts any off the wall ideas regarding Excite Truck, I just want to give a reminder how this is Character Discussion. So, there's Project H.A.M.M.E.R., the main char you play as in Red Steel (but Sakurai didn't want to include guns with Snake, so that one's unlikely), and most likely chars that haven't really been identified from games like Raid Over the River and Disaster: Day of Crisis. If anyone else has any ideas, let's hear 'em.

P.S. To the first mod who sees this: I find it hard to believe there haven't been any threads on this yet, but a search gave me nothing, so if I'm just spamming, don't hesitate to close it. :)

Does this include franchises and titles released after SSBM?

No, most likely just franchises which we never heard off. Probably franchises released after Wii launch.

although ssbm paved the way for fire emblem, we can't have any japanese only characters in ssbb. so he is refering to franchises that are new, to probably to help sell the game when it comes out.

Wii Sports could actually provide a decent combined moveset, expecially if they keep adding more to the series than just Golf, Baseball, Tennis and Airplane.

Think of it as the new Game and Watch.

Sorry, I hadn't meant to make this so confusing, but Gary got it closest. Although colbusman, why can't there be Japanese only chars? Weren't Marth and Roy Japanese only when SSBM was released?

The Wii sports guy could definitely have a moveset, I agree on that, almost the way Peach's moveset is partially derived from Mario sports games. The char design makes that debatable, though.

we can't have japanese only characters because sakurai said so. although since it did lauch fire emblem in the americas, he may change his mind.

Sakurai didn't exactly say that Japan only characters couldn't be in the game. He said something like "I'd like to stay away from them." or "I'd like to keep the American audience in mind."

All Japanese characters just cant happen even though the support may be a bit high since fire emblem seems to be one of the hottest games right now.

Sakurai said that he is not only going to choice characters that are populare in Japan but hinted that it worked great with FE. So he will most likely include some percentage of characters that are populare in Japan (Starfy anyone?) .

It has also been said (by him) some time back that they ARE going to include a few new Rev(Wii) characters.

The char design makes that debatable, though.

I compare the Wii Sports Guy to Mr Game and Watch... Neither have particularly interesting character designs, but both form interesting movesets by combining their numerous games.
