Backwards & Reverse Laser

I've never had this clarified for me, so I'd like to know...is it possible to shorthop backwards and fire the blaster in the same direction that you were facing? As a better description, let's say that you're facing to the right. After jumping to the left while still facing to the right (you should see Fox's backflip animation), is it possible to fire the blaster to the right? If so, how is it done?

Nearly every time I have tried, I wind up shooting in the opposite direction or I illusion off the edge. The only time I've been able to pull it off is with a full jump, but with very little backward movement.

Also, would this be the same thing as the reverse laser, or is it entirely different?

Shorthop in desired direction, quickly tap control stick in opposite direction, press B. You get a lot more horizontal movement if you shorthop away from the direction you want to fire the laser in, but doing it well gives the illusion that you shorthopped backwards.

retreating short hop laser? hard as heck to do, but i would absolutely love to learn it.

There's a very simple way to laser in any direction without accidentally illusioning: Tilting the control stick will change laser direction, smashing it will use illusion. Most people quickly smash it in the direction they want to fire, but that usually ends in quite a few accidental illusions. Just tilt in whichever direction you want to fire and you'll never use illusion or miss directions again (with practice).

You can also snap it in the opposite direction before you even jump to prevent an accidental illusion, and still turn around when you go to laser. It makes shdl'ing while moving in the opposite direction a lot easier. Dash away, snap towards them, jump, laser, and repeat.
