1) how exactly do you do the shortened illusion? i can randomly do it by just continuously pressing b after the but i'm pretty sure it can be done consistently.
2) how do you backland? I've seen it done but have never been able to do it myself, probably because i dont know how.

Shortening Illusion? press B again on the 23th or 24th frame I think, but basically if you press B while the illusion is going on(Fox flying), you'll cancel it.
Backlanding is done by reverse SHLing, but so fast that the gun doesn't actually have time to show up, and you'll just land backwards.. entirely useless IMO, though.
Practicing the timing for shortening Fox's illusion is pretty helpful. You can start off by just doing it and then mashing B... but it's suprisingly not as consistent as you might think (unless you're ridiculously good at mashing B). Get the 2nd B press timing and practice it, it's like 3/4 of a second after the intial B for the illusion, JUST before he says "SHOOP"...
Practice makes perfect, though.
I didn't know what "backlanding" is >_> Or what it's used for exactly..

Backlanding is worthless really. It's just a reverse SHL without the laser.

If you want to backland, just shorthop (or full jump), flick the opposite way with the control stick, and RIGHT before you land, press B. If you did it right, there will be no laser and no laser sound, and you will land facing the opposite way. As everyone already said, it doesn't really have much of a use, except for looking good. For example, you could run towards the ledge, backland right AT the edge, and slip off into an edgehog. You could do this with a reverse SHL, but if you do it by backlanding, it will look like you just jumped onto the edge and slid backwards somehow. Just for looks. In battle, it's much more effective to reverse SHL.
By the way, Ja_Ov, both your questions have already been answered in the 'Fox Movement Tricks' thread. Look near the top of the page.

awesome, thanks
btw, i read the fox movement tricks faq thing but the part on short illusion didnt help (I tried it and it still seemed pretty random). ijuka answered my question with exact numbers and that helped me understand why it seemed kind of random to me. RaSeruCort gave approximations that actually helped me do it a little more consistently.
and the part on backlanding part was actually better explained by ijuka. the faq thing didnt really help much... it was long, kind of repetitive and crammed so much information together that i instantly forgot it.
and, Dalal, thanks for better explaining the purpose of backlanding.
