View Full Version : Wavedashing Backwards Out of the Shine

If I dash one way, dash-cancel, shine, and then try to wavedash back the other way OUT of the shine, a lot of times, it doesn't work - I just remain frozen in the shine. I figured this out when I was practicing the infinite drillshine combo against Peach. My drillkick fell on the other side of her, so the shine would have to push her back the opposite way. When I shined, she was sent sliding back. I tried to wavedash but remained frozen in the shine. If I ever want to be able to do drillshine combos properly, I'll need to learn how to wavedash back the opposite way from the shine, so I can move the opponent back and forth across the course. So what am I doing wrong that causes me to miss the wavedash when I shine? It's strange because I can drillshine Peach right on FD, left on FD, but I can rarely continue the combo after turning her around (because I just can't wavedash out of the shine). Does turning around in the shine have any kind of lag associated with it? That could cause the problem, but I don't think there's any lag, so what is it?

Hope someone knows!

Thanks,
Dalal

You can't cancel the shine while turning, or that's what I figured. So I just shine, hold down, jump, and during the 3 frames smash the control stick diagonally backwards and down and then wavedash, faster than turning around in any case >_>

Are you setting the stick to neutral position before you begin to wavedash?

right. you can't jc the shine at the same time as you turn around in the shine.

SOooo...you have to wait until -after- you press X/Y to shift your control stick position (gotta be fast). then you do a backward wd out of the shine, and then you turn around while walking the 1-2 steps for the next shine (which is a regular forward waveshine).

Thanks guys! So the turning around in the shine is NOT instant, like I thought it was. How many frames does it take to turn around in the shine, anyone know? Just wondering...

It's almost instant, half the time I wavedash backwards out of a shine, I turn around right away, same goes for jumping.

I've never had a problem with wd bkwrd out of shine, but I have a friend that has the same problem, he still can't do it.

Don't put the stick in nuetral, that is way too slow.

Gj reading your own thread.

Waveshining backward is the same concept as WDing out of the sheild. Press jump before you press the direction.

except not quite because you can't turn inside of your shield, you can just hold a direction and WD in a shield... like the easy method for waveshining forward. For waveshining backwards you need to reset your control stick. I had this exact same problem with falco and later fox (since the timing is different). If you can already waveshine its not too hard to fix. Just go to FD and practice waveshining backwards all across both directions. If you accidentally turn around just waveshine backwards the other way. Took me like 1 day of practice (after being able to waveshine forwards easily that is) with each character. With fox I would recommend putting a CP link in the game and trying to waveshine him across the stage backwards so you know that you are getting good distance out of your wavedash... like most things in terms of technical skill in this game its just practice. Also try and force yourself to waveshine the same way forwards and backwards so you don't have too different methods and rely on seeing which way fox is facing to do it.

Nah no need to reset the control stick, I don't remember if I said it, but during the jumping animation(3 frames? O.o) You can do anything you want with the control stick, so I move it from DOWN to DOWN-BACK.. works for me almost all the time. ;ö

Well, if you aren't perfect wavedashing, you could always walk an extra step in the other direction after you've shined, which *will* turn you around after the wavedash.

Advice to Dalal!

Just make sure to jump, before DI'ing diagonally for the air-dodge (to WD).

Also remember that it's possible to DI when shined to alterate the knockback, so while you try being flashy with the drill shine, people might be able to escape and attack you, if you don't SHFFL fast enough.

What I'm trying to say is that efficient>flashy, so try to end the combo with an up-smash as soon as possible to rank up damage faster than drillshining.

Or if your opponent doesn't knows about this, THEN show-off.

And I don't know about you guys but I can't count frames:urg:

The shine is....
Smash slang for "Reflector" Fox's down+B attack. It simply sounds cooler.

so does this wavedashing backwards of the shine apply to falcon as well

Falco? ...yes
Captain FalcoN? ..heck no. He doesn't has a shine.

Woody, I recommend you to read the "all terms and advanced techs" thread on Melee discussion, read the guides stickied on top of this page and watch some videos and of course practice.

But don't expect me repeating stuff you should look yourself in this site.

Check'em out!;)

Woody, you can wavedash out of anything (any move) that can be jump-canceled. To see if a move can be jump-canceled just try and jump while performing the move. If you succesfully jump, then you can wavedash out of the move. If you cannot jump, then too bad.
