View Full Version : Dthrow + Stab cancel help

I often see GERM or other link players using the dthrow, then stabbing once or twice to cancel the ability to tech, then grab again. How do you do this? I do the dthrow, press A twice for two stabs, then Z for a grab, but it goes in to a third stab. If its supposed to involve using R+A to grab, then my timing must be off, because when I do R+A to grab after a stab, it has no effect. Any advice?

just pressing the z button during the combo makes you use a third slash try to jump cancel grab

Your timing is simply off. By the way, I suggest not trying this actually. It's nothing to rely on.
Sure, Germ did it in his combo vid, but I haven't seen him do it in his 1 vs 1 matches.

It does work due to reflexes (most people shield after getting jabbed) but your timing is off. If you do it more then once they might see it coming so just use it as a mix up.

jus practice, there are some times in a battle when u must speed things up and then slow them down...repeat after me> ¨ grab + Dthrow + A + A + Z ¨ (BTW there is no problem using this in real matches, if timed right it is idiot proof)

I practiced it a bit, and i think that jump cancelling it gives me better results, even though I don't get it 100% of the time. Using just Z without jump cancelling almost always makes me stab, unless I wait a second, but it seems that jump cancelling the grab brings out the hookshot faster. I'll test it out when I smash against my friends later in the week. Thanks for the advice!

how do you jump cancel the hookshot, and what is it used for and does it help in real matches?
You're pressing Z too early. Wait another split second for the second jab animation to completely end before trying to grab. Keep practicing, but don't use it too much or people will catch on.

When you jump cancel grab you jump and then hit the z button right after this makes you do a standing grapple which is faster than a running grapple.

I was having trouble with that at first too. You'll get the timing down jsut keep working on it. Jump canceling as many have said works, also I do this sometimes you might wanna give it a try, after the one or two initial japs slightly, very slightly tap the stick in the direction you want the hookshot to go and than hit z almost simotanelously. Like everyone else has said though it's nice to switch things up one in a while don't rely on it though there are bettet methods of following up a throw, if you're looking for somethign in chain grab sense, again predictable but can work in the right situation, try a d throw and shffl b airs l cancel reverse grab d throw repeat, b throws work to make sure the damage is high enough so they cant get off a tech roll, it actually works well on another link hardly every on fast fallers.

lolol..I don't need advice from people who just joined the smash forum and never been to a competitive tournament...I'm not trying to be an *** nor am I trying to sound like the best player ever... but seriously man....
It doesn't work vs experienced players, you just need to hold Sheild + right or left on the C stick during the Jabs or just jump  This is why you don't see the best Link players doing it in their matches.
Also...most "noobs" shield after getting jabbed :dizzy:

To answer the initial question of the topic:
You can tech before the slash.
What you saw in the video is players who DI to one direction. GERM slashes to stun and then re-grabs. This doesn't work against a lot of players who can tech the Dthrow.
