Alot of people debate on weather or not Link is useless in Major tourneys. Most pro Link users would probrably get decently far, but would meet their fate to sayy...a Sheik or Fox user, which raises my next question on weather or not you guys think Link holds a place against most top tier characters? :ohwell:

A good Link does well against Peach, and can hold his own against a Marth.

Link's got one counter and two or three bad matchups. Not too shabby. Going all one character for a whole tourny is a bad idea unless you use Fox, Falco or Shiek because they have almost all good matchups. Link needs to be able to counterpick, but you can use Link on the majority of the cast.
Yes, he is. Go play Marth if you're trying to win anything besides a low tier tourny.

I think you guys are misunderstanding one thing. See there is something called, difference in skill. It goes like this, Isai is the 2nd best in the world, he uses fox. Isai has probably been playing the game since the day it came out, and ssb64 same thing. Isai is considered 1st in ssb64. Now, name one link player that has spent as much time and put as much effort as isai has? There is your answer. How can one know link isn't able enough to be good in tournaments, if we are yet to see a link's max potential? And btw, you can't say link isn't able in tournaments. Because aniki, played ken, and he does well against him. (he used link). Also aniki, played against the number one shiek, and he lost by one stock. barely lost. Now considering, shiek used to be cosidered best char in the game, AND is a link counter. I say it's all whos playing link. :p. Perhaps the people playing link in the past weren't "able" enough.

I agree with smash fan it all depends on who is playing link. If you are good with link then use him if not than dont or practice more simple enough =/

I suppose you guys are right, i mean Aniki isnt one of the best in Japan for nothing eh?

NOTE*** Isai isn't the 2nd best in the world, he doesn't even make top ten.
But, yea, Aniki and Azen have both done VERY well in tournaments with Link, but mainly because they have outsanding skill as players.

isai i think ranks 4 in the usa . But its true, some if not all characters potential has not been fully discovered yet. Link can be amazing if played right.

Azen, KDJ, M2K, Ken, Chu dat...he definately isn't 4th best in USA and the post I replied to mentioned him being second best in the world.
Also Smashfan, Isai does not "use" Fox, he uses CFalcon and Sheik. :psycho:

lol Link would be near to useless not in most major tournies but all of them =x quite a shame thou but u wont really see a Link player placing somewhere on the top 10 WHILE actually usingn him and not counter picking ( unless its shiek =P )

nj i know u are foxandfalco but who do u use.

Fox/Falco/Sheik when I'm trying to win my hardest
Zelda/Link when I just want to have fun (which is 90% of the time).
NJ: Yeah, they do well, but they don't actually win. You don't see Azen using Link in an MLG event, and the last I read Aniki placed around 10th in a Japanese Tournament.
Then consider who you're talking about. Azen is incredible at almost any game he plays, and Aniki has a very odd style of play.
Its important to counterpick, its a key part of winning tournies, Marth is a good counterpick.
LINK can hold his own against most players, but lets admit it, its not a smart idea to play Link when u can play Marth (at a decent skill level of course), when facing fox or sheik...

Let's really be honest here. Link has a good chance to win in a major tourney. Watch out for Fox and Sheik and its in the F***en bag, son. And of course you need counter picks...who in their right mind would just go Link and "HOPE" to win, well I guess thats all they can do is "hope". And I'm a primary link user and I'm badmouthing that n!gg*. Link can rape Marth and Marth could turn around and dig in his a$$ too. If you want Link to win you better have some back-up. Like a Sheik, Doc, or Peach. Falco, I know its way easier for Link to kill then that b!t*h Fox. Have fun n!gg@z!!!

lol yea it was but back to the topic link does have a good chance of winning a tournament and like eveyone has said its about the person using him and knowing how to use links moves. i havent really been to much tournaments in a while but i will soon and the best charater i use for smash is link when i really want to win :D hopefully i can win a tournament with him soon

Link is good against some characters, but has a really tough time on others... If a link and a fox at equal pro skill faced off, the Link would most likely lose. He just has a tougher time. So if you intend to go all or most with link... You better have some **** good skills.

I wouldn't say Link is bad. I like him, personally. Two projectile moves, three if you add the arrow. Aniki beat Ken using Link. Good close-up moves, an excellent Up-Smash for recovery, a chain for recovery and a few combos, I'd say he's not that bad. Perhaps underrated?

Isai doesn't use fox? Are you sure about that? Want me to show you a video of him 4 stocking the germ with his fox?

oh, that vid that's like...a year old >_>
plus Isai told me that wasn't even his Fox when he saw the Germ vs Isai videos :P

guys...get over it. link win never win a major torney...we all know it to be true.
azen's link is the only exception

guys...get over it. link win never win a major torney...we all know it to be true.
azen's link is the only exception
The top sentence totally contradicts the bottom sentence. The first sentence is saying no link will ever win a major tourney, and then you go on and list someone that can win a major tourney with link...WTF? And if there is 1 exception, that link can win a major tournament, tell me why he is the only exception, and why no one else will ever win a major tournament besides azen.
Every rule will have some exceptions. The language you're speaking right now is based on that idea.
Maybe masahirox worded it wrong. If you need it spelled out for you, he meant that Azen is the best link player, and unless you're as good as/better than him, you will not win a major tournament.

Me. I bet Azen has too.

Me.
No you haven't, or else you would be recognized as a great player.
I bet Azen has too.
More effort than Isai actually :) Azen is the man.
Lord HDL
09-10-2006, 04:28 PM
Putting effort has nothing to do with being recognized, because there are people like Sastopher that are great players and hardly anyone recognizes them because they have difficulty traveling.

I thought you meant it in other way since we where talking about "the great Isai" here.
My bad :D

yup yup...btw azen rarly uses link anymore(obviously you have never played his link like i have).... he used too...hmmm..lets see why do you think he dosen't anymore!? ill take you through it...he thought...(why isn't my link winning as mush as it should be?...i guess ill try top tier....cuz like normal people, i like winning)
... but he would be the only one with any chance...i mean his luigi destroys....his link does too...but he would still not win...he might come close. the only reason for this is because he is a sesoned pro that actually knows how to handle low tier unlike us...XD
smashf: come on now ... its azen ...he's a ****ing exception and if you dont know that by now....shame on you
example: ricky is amazing.....hopfully you know that....but the best he did at a local MD /VA torney was 7th...
its not gonna happen simple as that....

Link can defiantely handle any competition that come at him... with a few exceptions.
Link will ALWAYS have problems with Sheik. I dont care how good you think you are, a good sheik will chaingrab/tilt you to killable percentage, and WHAM, fair for the kill!
The space animals also happen to be a pain in the backside. Not as much as sheik, but their shines make it difficult for you to attack from a distance, and make it difficult to get real close at the same time. Abuse the crap out of the hookshot though, and you can pull off victories. Difficult victories, but a victory nonetheless.
Overall, Link can hold his ground vs. most challengers. The problem is, his hardest matchups just so happen to be among the most popular characters at tournies.

It's people like you that have a negative attitude towards link, that force me to make my link better and better. See the reason I started getting serious with smash, was because I met this kid that was the cockiest kid ever, and he 4 stocked me, and he beat everyone by 3 or 4 stocks in this one place. Most people would be like, **** I suck, i got 4 stocked, i better stop playing smash altogether, not me though. I'll just keep getting better... I don't like cocky people, or people that act like everything is "set" in smash. i.e. there is no such thing as newer players coming to the top or different characters coming to the top.
Smashfan34 Out.

im just saying that it's not gonna happen...
every link player knows in the back of their head their chances of ever becoming "pro" are slim....you know it, i know it...if you seriously think that you have a chance going all link at a torney....you're sadly mistaken
i think that you just haven't experienced getting your *** beat time and time again from shieks, foxes and marths...eneeeennndddleeessss shiek chaingrabs to fairs..."ken" comboing / tipping marths...drill/wave shine crazy foxs...pillaring falcos...gay peaches....
i might just be saying this because i come from the best region...MD/VA... but it's true...
for me, i know its true....yea, its fun to rape noobs with link... but that's it ....thats why i second fox ><....cuz i like winning more
OMG spoken like a king, your right i'm pretty good with link but i met a pro marth player he 3 bags me. OMG he is unbelieveable but he even says his chances are slim if he was as good as link as he is with marth against even player marth he would lose link has alot of disadvantages unless ur "The Germ" or Aniki then u aint got what it takes also where are u from what region.....MD/VA? Also ncie ****in tag i love the link picture.

I can see sheik and fox, but marth come on. What kind of link player are you if you have trouble with marth. Every single pro or decent link player will fight for the arguement that link is better vs marth. Perhaps you didn't read the thread a month back, when the germ gave 1,000 reasons why link beats marth. anyways, suggesting no one can be a pro because link doesn't have potential is ridiculous. why go on link boards if ur gonna bash link? It's not how good the character is that you pick, rather, how good you make the character.

I main as Young Link, and Marth is one of the easiest match ups for me... I don't see why Marth would give Link any problems.

While I've never been to any international or "major" tourneys, I do attend all I can and do rather well.
That said, Link is a pretty ****ty character. As stated by many people on this thread his biggest problems are characters that are used the most. So the odds are blatently against you in any serious tournament setting.
That said, I generally beat the crap out of all space animals I fight.
But that's because I have several people who play them constantly.
Whereas on the other hand, I do in fact have troubles against Marth because I don't get a lot of experience against him.
Do I think Link is "useless" at a tournament level?
Hell no, I've placed enough to prove it.
The real question is whether or not he is "useFUL."
And compared to having other characters like say, Peach or Marth under your belt, the answer is, sadly, "No."

Well said indeed.

Actually, I really enjoy playing with Link. I main Falco/Fox, but it gets really boring to just: shine>waveshine>waveshine>Upsmash/Grab or Shine>Dair>Shine>Dair...
Link's attacks looks sexy and ARE sexy. Just when the opponent thinks you're focked up, you came back to the stage with the Bomb Recovery! (Haven't missed one since last week ^_^ ) The sex kick, it can rape space animal's Fire Recovery attack, even the Illusion, without breaking a sweat (Watch out you don't mess up against the Phantasm :p ).
Or Link's Chaingrab, it's all about mind-games. I really enjoy playing with Link, he's my third main man in the game, and I'm thinking making him the main.
Just enjoy playing, get serious in tourneys.
Later.
