I'm going to modify what the above have said.
When waveshining, you must take careful note of certain characters, and the distance they travel. You can find all of this in a stickied guide. However, I have noticed that different events affect the usage of a waveshine. Also, some characters can technically be waveshined, but not as straightforward. For example.
Down+B, Wavedash in a direction, Down + B, Wavedash in a direction, etc.
This is the standard look of a waveshine, effective yes, and truely flashy, but with some characters, like Samus, it is impossible to reach with just that method. This is why you should really follow this pattern for some:
Down+ B, Wavedash in direction, trot same direction, Down + B, repeat
This gains you distance, and when properly used at the correct speed and character, still in effect, waveshines the opponent.
Now, you can also gain a what I guess could be called a speedshine, which is basically the following:
Dash into opponent, Crouch cancel into Down + B, immediately wavedash towards opponent, Down + B, repeat until distance is exceeded.
Basically your momentum is carried from your dash to waveshine fast enough to make you keep pace with the character being knocked back from the shine.
Hope some of the above helped. :)

Left and right if using a perfect wavedash.

You still have to be a litle slanted for a wavedash to work.

perfect wavedash is "almost" horizontal
