I have a problem. Sometimes when I try to use Link's hookshot recovery, the chain does not come out. I do my jump in the air, do not do up-B, air-dodge, then try to press either Z or R+A and the chain does not come out. What am I doing wrong? This is costing me almost two lives each match I play.

ive seen it happen to me a few times its probably from using the hookshot then popping up in the air and trying to use it again, after you were knock back from the opponent hitting you.

No, I definitely didn't use it before I was sent into the air. I think it might have something to do with being knocked off while in the air, but it might just be a coincidence. Anyone else have any experience with this?

I think you are using it before but u dont realize it. You cant do it again even if u grab the ledge. Your feet have to hit the ground before u get to use it again. I think you are using it then getting back on the ledge, being knocked back off w/o hitting the ground and trying to use it again. If thats not it then i have no clue whats wrong =/

You could be to close to the stage when trying to use it. If you're too close he won't have enough room to bring it out and you'll fall without a third jump. Or your timing might be a little off and you're using it too late.

I'm not sure how to say this, but sometimes you can't use it after a B-up. Like, you'll make it back once with a B-up then get smashed back (without hitting the floor), then you'll come back and try to hook on, but the hook won't come out, cause you already used B-up (even though you can use B-up again). I think that's how it works, but I'm just not sure why. Either way, do NOT use it unless you can't make it back with B-up, that's probably the best way to stay alive. Sorry if you don't understand that. I can't find of a way to say it. I'll check it out to see if it's right either way.

Well, if I up-B on the ground and before the lag ends, someone hits me off the stage, will that occur? And in similar fashion, if I miss a grab and they take advantage and knock me off, will I not be able to use the chain again?

That shouldn't affect it. You can't use it twice without touching ground and you can't be too close to the stage to use it. As long as you don't use it you should be able get it out anytime after that. But then again I use it alot.

first off, every link master knows when to and when not to use his hookshot recovery. I hope to see you in an MLG tourney soon, cause i could use some extra cash.

Anyway, I've found out a few things:
1. You cannot use the hookshot recovery after your invincibility frames are over. So you must press Z directly, or only slightly after you air dodge.
2. You can't be too close to the ledge. I don't think this is the problem though because if you're too close you can still see the chain, it just doesn't stick.
3. You can only use the hookshot once every time you're in the air. You must touch the ground before you can use it again, and edgehogging does NOT count. So if you edgehog, hop up, and get hit again, it won't work.
Lastly, check the sig.

actually, you can use the hook-shot recovery as close as possible to the stage, as long as it's at the ledge level and not somewhere below it. Lord HDL has a video on his guide that exemplifies this method.
^ What you're talking about is different. When you use the hookshot too close to the stage, it cancels itself and you immediately go into the 'free falling' state. Since you can grab the ledge in this state, you can hug the ledge, hookshot, then grab it right after.
I think what ballad is doing wrong is either being too close too the stage when using the hookshot, or waiting too long after the airdodge to use the hookshot. Is that it?

I think it happened because you were to close to the stage.
