View Full Version : Link user needs help
I am a current Link user who can't ever seem to win a match anymore, my strategy used to revolve around the block grab, but most players have taken advantage of the time it takes for the hookshot to retract. The shield grabbing used to ALWAYS work for me, but now it seems that my strategy has become one dimensional. I am known to shield grab or regular grab over 50 times in a 4 stock match because that is my first instinct for some reason.
What I am trying to say I suppose is, can anyone help me formulate a new strategy? There is a catch though... I can't really wavedash constantly, my SHFFLING isn't great, my instincts aren't good, I use my projectiles carelessly. Do not get me wrong, in my area, I can still get wins over some people. But there are a few here in Lancaster I can't beat to save my life... My biggest issue is the character matchups, I am HORRIBLE against Sheik, Peach, Marth, and there is a pesky Mario that a friend uses that blocks alot that gets me to use attacks out of desparation.
I do have pluses though, when there is an opening, I am quick to see it and exploit it, I do have some good grab combos (basic, but effective), and I have gotten pretty handy with the short hop arrows. I've read the guides on here, but I can't seem to keep it all in my mind. I've watched videos of Germ and Aniki that just make me envious. Can I get some help?

If you do one thing too much, it becomes predictable, like computers. Try to do things you don't do very often. As far as the wavedashing and shffl's, just practice and you'll get the hang of it. But keep in mind that you don't have to be a really fast Link to win. Play smart and force your opponent to make mistakes and take advantage of everything.
As far as matchups, Link shouldn't have much of a problem against Marth. Use a lot of bombs, boomberangs and the occasional arrow to keep him at a distance. Shield grab is also very effective against Marth.
For the others, I'd say that you should just use a lot of projectiles until you get good with more close range combat. You might also think about having a backup character to use against Shiek and Fox. I find that I like to use Roy/Marth against them when I play them and I do fairly well.
Just practice practice practice. When you get the advanced stuff down good, then you can try and speed up your game, but don't get sloppy. One mistake can lead to a free combo start for a fast character and that is a bad thing for our slow champion.
Good luck!
I will keep that in mind definately. For Sheik, I've been trying to work with Roy, but it will take some time with him. One thing is for sure, wavedashing with Roy is much easier than it is with Link.

I use marth/falco with my link and i think falco is alot easier to take shiek with. So i would expiriment with falco too. You should still use roy/marth or whoever but i just think falco is a better choice for shiek.
Falco was my second best character, but I have replaced him with his counterpart.
My boy Evil Angel plays as Sheik, he's good. He told me to crouch cancel when he attacks. He teaches me to play while we play the game. I need tips to defeat him (using Link) I need ways to counter his FAir, NAir, BAir, UTilt, Dtilt,FTilt, and how to counter Sheiks speed, and also how can I use my Link to counter his Links quicker, more precise with the projectiles Link?
What to do, what to do, what to do (man)?

If you really must use link against shiek here is what you do. Shield. That is your best friend i think. If you have ever heard of turtling it is when you just kind of hide out in your shield use shield throws and not being to aggreassive. Turtling is what you need to do. Become good at using your in place dodge (down while shielding) that helps to avoid throws which can mess you up pretty bad. Also abuse your projectiles mainly your bombs and boomerang. Use them ALOT. You will become better with them the more practice that you get. Play your friend more and try using shield grabs and practice with your projectiles.
Wow!!! Bltz boosting my stats like I can't be beat. Well thats what happens I guess. But Blitz you need a lot of work. (I know my name says Evla but It stands for Evil Angel) This guys is werid man. No offense Bltz but you do need a lot of work. I'm gonna post a video of my sheik vs your link soon. Flames are aloud on both of us but mostly Bltz cause he needs training. I am being trained by El Komosutro. Any1 heard of him? Anyway Bltz before you start acting like Aniki or Germ take a look at my Link. Your style of play is effective but not. Your shield grabbing is good at a point but only Oni (Nelson) really falls for that. Use your projectiles more wisely. Against Nelson you through a bomb foward when he was above you?
Here is the vid I was talking about. Flame if must, rate and comment plz.

I admit I still need some practice and I do make mistakes for the record. I am not trying to mess with Bltz if I sound cruel iight. I still need some work.

That was a slip of my finger. I am not trying to be Aniki or Germ, I said they make me envious.
Either way, EVLA knows I am TERRIBLE against his Sheik. That video is not a highlight reel for me, that is for sure. Clearly, not a good match there I know that.. but I have my on days, and my off days... that day happens to fall in the off category.

BLTZ, try using some more arial attacks. Nair is one of your best friends due to it's priority. When you use up b to get to the edge, try not to go past the edge so that you sweet spot it. If you go above, you'll just get punished.

My advice based on the video is that you need to work on your movement techniques, offensive techniqes, and precision, with movement techniques being the highest possible on that list.
Movement techniques include dashdancing, wavedashing, dash cancelling, dash cancelling w/ shield, shield-dasshing (WD from shield into shield), Platform dashing, etc., as well as reacting after L-cancelled aerials. You should learn all of these, not just wavedashing and dashdancing, as well as how to effectively mix them up and their utility against particular characters; i.e. you should learn that you can dash away from a sheik tilt and quickly bair.
You also need to develop an understanding of what will work in certain situaions, and what will not, so you can begin to predict the flow of a match and adapt appropriately. And cut down on the swordspins.

U mostly need practice, a good way to practice is playing with friend, try to add the basic technique like wavedashing, shffl, dash dancing, etc. If u do this u will probably not paying attention to the match because ul need to think of the move u wanna do but with time and practice these move will incorporate themself in your game and ul get better really fast
