Good job Randall, Chris, and Chad. It's nice to know that Calgary is feared in some corners of the world.
When I come to play you guys in the summer you will all tremble at my being a B.C. smasher mwahaha.

Oh was there a bi-weekly today?...awaiting results :)

Wow, I came in 5th. Well... That's kind of low, but it was a good first try I suppose. Me and Pibbers/Alex have no competition in our group of friends, so we're only really good at playing against each other. We'll get better though, now that I know some evil tactics that have been used against me (... kirby.). It's kind of hard to get better though, if I can only play against one person. Ah well, by the end of the six hour marathon (or however long), I've felt as if i've gotten a lot better. I hope Pibbers' parents will take me there again in the next competition. I have a strong desire to destroy Chad's evil peach.. I think i'll also start practicing against Pibbers with some other chars, so I can always confuse the crap out of people with different play styles :).

Excellent. Nice to see Chad do great. Also nice to see Brad and Alex be at the top, quite an improvement both of you have made. Levi, on the other hand :( you should be placing higher IMO

Me and Pibbers/Alex have no competition in our group of friends, so we're only really good at playing against each other.

Same story, I only have one friend worthy of competition (he kicks my ***), but look where I am in terms of skill (well, you wouldn't quite know, but I do place at the top consistently) . Well, I also honed my skills up with BtT and HRC, but those don't count

Chad's been doing great for quite a while now. No surprise there. But you're right about Brad and Alex. I wonder how much you guys have improved. Maybe one of you will be able to finally knock Chad off his throne. The only player capable of beating Chad consistently is John (and myself;) ) and he isn't always there (and I'm never there).

One of these days, when I can really afford to get a Wii and a copy of Smash, I might be able to improve with a little more consistency. Until then, I'll just have fun with what I can do, and that should be good enough. I am quite enjoying these tournaments, when I can attend, that is.

No kidding about the "consistently" part. I've never won a set against John! I feel like such a scrub fighting him.

I will say that I'm starting to understand what you people are thinking when you hate on Peach... simply because I'm starting to feel that way about Shiek. Sooo many B.S. moves, it's retarded. However, the same thing can (and should) be said of Peach. I'm the last one that should complain about character choice, but man... Shiek...
arg.

So yah. Next time anyone gets frustrated playing Peach, I'm sorry and I won't take what you say about her personaly.

Thanks for the kind words, John and Gary. I think it's awesome that you still follow along with the Calgary scene even though you're in Vancover, Gary. ^^ (at least for now)

Last I played Chad (I suppose the only time), I fared pretty well. I ended up with more KOs against him, but he won more matches overall (maybe 55/45 or 60/40). They were some good matches, though.

I haven't played anyone in the community for a long time. We should fix that somehow.

03-26-2007, 10:48 AM
for wondering how good i've got? probably just under chad. cause our sets (2 of them) were very close, always down to the last stock last hit.

but he's still on the slightly better than me for sure side.

but i still have yet to play mich since like the second bi-weeklie, when i still played falco main.

mich i need to face your climbers.

you wont get them, the brackets glitched.

all that matters is Chad won, i got second, kirby alex got third.

mich didnt play.

I would like to point out that that is most definitely not "all that matters" and you will get the official brackets, as per as-yet-unwritten Pro Impact policy.

Another important part of that policy is particularly directed at the newer people who are attending the tournament: ensure that you are always welcome at these tournaments and in this thread, contrary to some of the vibes emanating from our veteran attendees from time to time. You've come into an already-established community so a lot of the atmosphere is already casual and lighthearted. Therefore, it's easy to misinterpret what someone's saying if you don't recognize the fact that most of the players met quite some time ago and know each other very well, even if you're brand new to the crowd.

Now to add a disclaimer just in case the point was missed: The Pro Impact Players assume no responsibility or liability for damages incurred by comments written, uttered verbally or otherwise presented to the public under the Pro Impact label, unless specifically published by RJM, MICH or JIN*. So neener neener and nyah nyah. :psycho:

Maybe one of you will be able to finally knock Chad off his throne. The only player capable of beating Chad consistently is John (and myself;) ) and he isn't always there (and I'm never there).

That's a throne surrounded in mounds of turnips and groveling Toadstools, remember. I'm having a hard time assessing Chad's skill as an overall smasher since I don't see his other characters too often, but he's most definitely improved as a Peach. She's just such a phenomenally different character than all the rest of them that it's difficult to tell how a Peach player would hypothetically fair choosing someone different in any given match. Take that Young Link† to within the final four of any of these bi-weeklies and I'd be truly convinced.

As an offshoot point (and something that I normally would never even bring up in accordance with the positive Pro Impact spirit), there seems to be an awful lot of talk about de-throning the invincible Chad as though the matches aren't even close. Except for John. And Chad talks as though his matches with John aren't even close. This paints a pretty unrealistic picture of what's going on in Calgary, I think. Particularly because the more technically skilled players like Alex and Levi get shot to the bottom of the rung. "Oh well if John owns Chad and Chad owns everybody else, then how does anybody stand a chance at a tournament!?" Easy. It doesn't work that way. Any one of you who goes to the bi-weeklies could've gone to Lethbridge, watched all the players there and said, "Wow, I think even Brad could win this tournament." And you would've been right, we're all better than anyone in Lethbridge, but both myself, Chris and even the mighty Chad were eliminated from singles by players that simply shouldn't have been able to do it. This point flows nicely into.....

for wondering how good i've got? probably just under chad. cause our sets (2 of them) were very close, always down to the last stock last hit.

but he's still on the slightly better than me for sure side.

First of all, nobody asked. Secondly, calm down there, Macrocephalus, let's see you waveland. Just once. I dare ya.

Brad is most definitely improving, there's no doubt of that. Having competition on a regular basis is a guaranteed formula for getting better. But don't kid yourself, the reason for his markedly accelerated position in the tournament standings rests squarely with switching main characters.

I have a list in my head of where I truly believe everyone stands in smash skill, but I obviously won't be posting it. There's already enough stressing out about who's better than who without trying to throw my theories into the mix. Either way, I think my point is clear and regardless of how many irrelevant matches you may cite to try and justify your Smash skill, the fact remains that only John beats Chad in the end.

But don't forget....only MICH beats John. ;)

* Unlikely. Also, subject to edition.
† Or any character really. (Except Sheik. Duh.)

Very nice post Randall.

Yes, Mich does seem to have the better of me. Chad beats Mich. And I beat Chad. So it's a game of rock, paper and scissors. Well, with the odd game every now and then that paper beats scissors...

I truly believe that the only reason that I cannot beat Brad as easily as Chad rests in play styles (of course the character helps too). I thrive on my mindgame game but Brad has a really aggresive playstyle, which seems to just get the better of me.

I'm not as technically skilled as I want to be though (for that you would have to see Neil, that's why his fox owns me)

Lol, John. Alex & I were suposed to play bowser and DK the whole tourney but someone didn't stick with their vows.

Jessie: I was the white n' nerdy guy who was really loud and kept yelling at the stupidest things, I paused a lot, and taunted with c falcon a bunch which is gay =P. My name's Levi and my tag is =] as gary had mentioned. Also I burped into brad's hair a lot. People call me a jerk but I have no idea why.

And for those of you whom don't know I mop the floor with chad, just not on the bigscreen =P. "Peach beatin' time!" I'm just joking. Chad's character advantage over me; of myself playing underdeveloped fastfalling characters has caught up to him though, we're getting pretty closely matched. If he doesn't mind my comment, otherwise "disreguard that, I suck *****."

Good ol' Randall and his posts of encouragement =]

I would be the first to agree (and I have mentioned it serveral times in the past), that many of my matches are extremely close. The final brackets only show the black and white outcome, you never see how many win/losses in a set, the number of stocks left after a match, and the damage percents at the end. (It would be cool tho... Did I just make more work for Randall? ;))
Further than that, a couple of rounds where won just by sheer luck since I seem to have an unusual nack for pulling stichfaces and the other crazies. Some people have even asked if I do something that incresses the odds of pulling them.

In an attempt to show I'm more than just my character choice, I have been trying to get better at Young Link by playing as him more and even going as far as learning how to wavedash in combat (gasp!). However, it's extremely hard to ditch Peach, when I know I stand a good chance of winning with her, and play someone I don't feel confident with. Nobody likes losing a tournament match because of a failed wavedash off a stage.

When I have the luxury of practicing against other humans, I'm left with a tough choice.
Do I play Peach, and improve her game? Gotta keep people like Brad at bay, since I'll never hear the end of it if he got past me and took the tourney. Perhaps I'll even beat John one day if I practice enough!
Or do I play YoungLink, and learn what other characters have to put up with. Wavedash, waveland, fight tooth-and-nail for every last percent of damage, rather than enjoying a 70% lead if someone accidently holds down during a Peach D-Smash. Habits learned with Y.Link might not transfer well to Peach. Will I start trying to throw a boomerang when I go back to Peach?

If you where to make a bar-graph, with "probibility of winning" on the left, and "character choice" on the bottom, Peach would be a solitary tower, with Y.Link starting to poke above the near flat-line of other character choices.
At least other people's graphs look more like city sky-lines than a monolith, and that's something I admire about everyone else.

I'll get there, tho. Unfortunatly, Brawl might be out before my Y.Link is ready to take top-four at a biweekly. :p

And calling me "Mighty Chad" is, as Randall can see, giving me FAR too much credit. If anyone is "mighty", it's Peach.

Naw, Levi, I have a high level of respect for you. You're an awesome cap'n falcon and falco - you should face Pibbers, he's only really trained his falco against my fox so he might put up a surprising fight.. But thats just speculation, since you seem to play completely different from me. It's Jesse, btw. :)

Chad - "If anyone is "mighty", it's Peach" - Don't make me start trying to play as Peach, now.. :P.

Oh, and Randall, I heard lots of good stuff about you from some people here. I hope I'll have a chance to see you on one of your better days, It'd be fun facing another Fox :).

I can play fox every once-in-awhile for about 4 matches, but then I play against peach and get too scared to shine and suck for about another 2 weeks, so maybe I can give a fair match as well. =] You're the first person to compliment me playing falco, thank you! I was reading old posts in the B.C. thread, and it said a guy named Nick once came to Calgary to play a guy named Neil, is this him? If he's as good as you say he is I'd really like to play him. Why doesn't he come to the bi-weeklies?

Yes, Mich does seem to have the better of me. Chad beats Mich. And I beat Chad. So it's a game of rock, paper and scissors. Well, with the odd game every now and then that paper beats scissors...
Mich seems to have the better of me too :( But that can be due to the fact that Mich is a very smart player. He's patient, and would rather strike when he knows he can hit than attack all the time. Our matches always involve a lot of mindgames and thus are some of the most intense I've had.

Not enough people in the community are afraid of playing me yet. ;)
I haven't played you yet Infil, but I doubt I'd be afraid of playing anyone. For example, I accepted a MM against the top ranked player in B.C., but that might just be stupidity.
