When your shield pops up like that that means that your holding R/L too long, its good to know how to do but only when your doing it on purpose (shielded wavedash). I guess the best advice i can give you is keep practicing. Eventually you should be able to do it where your joy stick is almost completly horizontal, thats the longest it will get (perfect wavedash). Other than that keep practicing and good luck.

Pablo summed it up. Takes some practice to get a perfect wavedash down.

Whether or not the shield pops up has nothing to do with how long the wavedash is. It all depends on the angle of the control stick. The perfect angle should be slightly less than in between down and the diagonal direction you want to go. If you master the correct angle, your wavedashes will become longer.

Another thing that you can do to make your wavedashes seem longer is dashing into them (smashing forward on the control stick to start the dash animation and then wavedashing in whichever direction you dashed in).

For good practice go into training mode or pick 2 person melee and just have the second player stand there and use nametags. you know you will be wavedashing with the best possible timing if you can wavedash without the nametag moving (other than horizontally). If you want to work perfect wavedashes I find making sure that you can walk right after wavedashing makes it easier to do it perfect. Trying to waveshine Ganondorf across FD is good to since you need to be perfect for him.
