More skilled at what? Using a keyboard and mouse? Maybe because console gamers use... CONTROLLERS :O !!!! I had this adapter, lets u use keyboard and mouse on your xbox, let this guy from school (alex) use it who's one of the best cs 1.6 players in Aus, beat him 25-2. That was after letting him play it for about 2 hours. It's funny cause I could beat him at every fps on pc except cs cause he knew the mechanics of each guns spray etc. Although I did beat him at xbox cs as well, but that "was version 1.5 apparently and shouldn't be counted" according to alex. I would play u on halo pc, except I sold my windows 360 controller.

How are they generally more skilled anyway? How does using a mouse to aim compare to duel analog sticks? Do pc gamers have to press up to 10 buttons a second on there keyboard when playing like smashers do? Maybe in rts's, but thats only the xtreme pro's and not what the majority of smashers do. But then matt told me that the warcraft 3 pro's do up to 250 actions per minute, which is still only 4-5 actions per second. The competitive scene for halo and smash combined is almost as big as the entire competitive pc scene. I do laugh when people say that nobody plays halo, then I sign in at 12pm on a Saturday and read "Population: 613, 970".

So please, don't say things like pc gamers are "generally" more skilled because I've done this argument too many times.

Marth doesn't looked nerfed if you compare to how most other characters got nerfed as well.

And PC Gamers are, as Zac said, more skilled at keyboard and mouse, not games as a whole.

You could argue that they're better at FPS but you'd have to research it yourself in order to make a good argument. =/

The only real argument you could say is that 'Overall there are more highly skilled PC gamers, because there is more PC games being played at a high-competitive levels'

By higher competitive level you look more at events like WCG, or some of the tournaments you see for Starcraft in South Korea. Not pugs or random nubs thinking they are teh kings.
In the end that shows nothing in analogy of skill as its down to the game ;)

A cooler argument would be 'Which is a more complex team game at a high level, CS or Halo?'

I can't wait to start playing Marthy wub wub wub <3

brawl is gunna be awsome. "hugs" and " gimpyfish" said that the game will be just as fast or near its peak. they also said with a little bit of practise with the brawl characters they were able to almost start moving just as fast as they did in melee.
so don't expect brawl to be a slow game.

I wouldn't say there are more console gamers than PC gamers. But I wouldn't say otherwise as well.
And considering how 1.6 has possibly one of the crudest game mechanics LOL; if you take UT, Quake and other hardcore fastpace action/fps games into account, Halo can barely compare.

But that aside.

Controlling **** via nooblord controller (my opinion) and keyboard-mouse combo shouldn't be a factor, it's just based on preference, which in the end, helps you excel in that method of control. Also because that should be mastered first over anything. For example, Zac's piss-**** on keyboard mouse, but goes through 7 controllers an hour because he goes lightspeed and rages on them.

Furthermore, I'd base the game more on prediction, hearing and game mechanics rather than control skill.

Btw "Population: 613, 970" barely compares to "Population: 9832754975093HADOOOOOKEN23084032948" of CS1.6 and Source.

P.S. Alex should stop sucking at other games.

Darkwing SykeDuk
02-05-2008, 04:10 PM
lol obviously its harder to control duel analog sticks, therefore more skill is required. Know one plays UT and Quake anymore.

p.s I'll pwn you in any pc fps <3

Sloth
02-05-2008, 11:09 PM
Poor confused Syke. There are halo players who can't aim with keyboard or mouse. People do still play Quake a lot, there are still many online tournaments held for Quake 3.. not so much ut tho, I am not sure where ut3's direction went. I haven't kept up with the scene.

You do realize that saying the controller input as a method of skill is such a naive and childish thing to argue with. Its just like any game, people adapt quickly to the controls then if it really has depth it comes down to Prediction and Timing.

Anyways, I'll rip you apart in PC fps Syke. Eazy mode.

Okay, now that I've actually pulled myself away from Brawl, I'm gonna try and organise the "Brawl Day" I guess.

Hmmm... Seems that 2 weeks from today is my only free slot to use my house with no one around to bug us...

Well what day would be good for everyone. Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th are my good days and days that everyone can just come in and play.

But yeah, unless something else is going on, and I guess if we can get another modded Wii, I can set up 2 areas of play. One on the Widescreen inside (Where my Wii is setup) and one on the 68cm outside.

Otherwise... someone elses house?

Everyone tell me their Ideas for stuff I guess and we'll see how we go.

I've got some bad news about K-0S.

He took a tumble down a flight of stairs at his girlfriend's house and now he's partially amnesiac. The weird thing though, is that all the memories that he's lost, are related to smash and the cube entirely!

It's strange.

And scary.

Today I met up with him, and tried to get him to either tell me he's joking, or to try and snap him out of it. Well, he's not joking, but he's making some progress.

I was with him yesterday, he's defnitely not faking it, it would be too well pre-meditated for him to be faking it.

He does remember Tech team, but he can't remember any of the pro smashers from around the world. Although this is a fact that seems contradictory.

I said I was going to post it in the general discussion, but I've decided against it purely out of respect. I'll post everything that's happened in this thread instead.

This is what I was going to post.

Hello, I’m Vyse. My real name is Anthony Smith and I live on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Let me ask you something. How would you feel if you, a dedicated smasher, had an equally dedicated friend that suddenly lost all memories of and relating to the Gamecube and Smash?

I was pretty distressed.

This is exactly what happened to a close friend of mine, K-0S (Pronounced chaos), who roughly one week from the posting of this thread had taken a tumble down a flight of stairs and in the process forgot all the memories he had of us playing smash, going to tournaments, and all the good times over the last 6 years.

I can’t say that he had forgotten them entirely. In actuality, it was like he had reverted to a state 6 years ago, as though he had only been playing smash for two months.

Believe me, the whole situation frustrates me to no end, that some of the people around me don’t want to take the situation seriously, and that his parents haven’t even taken him to some kind of specialist to get his head checked out.

So after a lot of deliberation, I’ve decided that I want to log all that I can for the world’s smasher’s to read for themselves. This isn’t some bull****, this is real.

For some reason, all of his memories but the ones I’ve mentioned before have been blocked from his mind.

(To protect the identities of my friends though, I’m not using their real names)

---

Saturday, 3rd February: Sieg’s House

It was probably one in the morning when we were first sent word of K-0S’s tumble. By ‘we’ I mean a number of my smash crewmates, Sieg, Nightjar, undead moose and myself, all at the same time. We were all playing Pokemon Battle Revolution, owning n00bs online when it began.

K-0S’s girlfriend known online as ‘undeserving’ sent a message to all of us:

”How long has the cube and smash bros. Melee been out?it’s undeserving texting from K-0S’s phone.he’s a bit disoriented so I’m trying to fix it.thanks.”

Fix what? One had to wonder, so I texted back the details of when they both came out in Australia to the best of my knowledge, and then asked what it was she was trying to fix.

“He thinks it’s two months ago,hit himself in the head.can’t remember lansmash.it’s frustrating.” She texted back, lansmash referring to a giant lan tournament we went to which included smash on its roster of tournaments.

Now some of my friends aren’t a fan of undeserving, which is why they aren’t taking any part of the situation seriously, I on the other hand am typing this, so you can see where I stand.

---

Last year I graduated from high school, but as luck would have it I’m now working full-time for my school as apart of its System administration team for a year before I go to university.

undeserving is also a student at this high school, and so throughout the week I’ve talked to her about the accident and what had happened. Basically, he tripped, and tumbled down the stairs in his girlfriend’s house, losing these specific memories in the process. She told me that other than that, he seemed perfectly fine, but losing 6 years worth of specific memories didn’t really feel fine to me. With the weekend being my only option, I told undeserving that I’d probably be swinging by her place on the weekend to K-0S.

Nightjar is one of my unique friends, in that during situations like these he manages to retain the head on his shoulders. Using MSN, we discussed the situation online, coming to two conclusions:

A) It’s a really un-funny joke
B) It could be a very serious head injury

And if wasn’t a joke as I’d planned to assess myself, there could be any chance that it could be some form of internal bleeding or haemorrhaging. But there has to be some way of bringing his memory back, my plan was to see him, and try to point out the contradictions in his memory.

---

Saturday 9th February: My house

The night before, my friend and fellow smasher, Rune happened to come onto MSN, and he agreed to come along with me to our local shopping centre to catch K-0S before he left work this day. However, he was unaware of K-0S’s condition.

Rune arrived at my place at about 10 o’clock, we played a little Pokemon Battle Revolution again, and then we caught the bus to our local mall. K-0S works in a retail store called ‘K-Mart’ and as we walked into the store, I explained the situation to Rune, who in light of it still seemed pretty calm about it, he’s the type of guy who is always level headed and reserved.

There K-0S was, working behind the photo counter. We walked up and said hello, also asking when he’d be coming off work so we could have lunch together. He said he’d be coming off work at 12.30 pm, about an hour and a quarter away.

So we left, browsing the store’s game section, then browsing our Mall’s game store, DVD store, book store, Asian food store, game store again…

When it got close to 12.30, we walked back into the store and met up with K-0S again, and we left together to buy some subway, the majority not having ‘eaten fresh’ in a while.

As we sat and ate our footlong subs, that’s when we began talking about smash. I wasn’t particularly trying to point out contradictions at that point, I was just telling him about some of the new characters in Brawl as he hadn’t been keeping up with it, he couldn’t believe Lucario was going to be a character.

I started with something along the lines of, “The game is really going to change it up, there’s no more L-cancelling or Wavedashing.”

To this, K-0S was confused, “What’s a wavedash?” he ask, a 2 year verteran of expert Doc play, wavedashing being a staple of his play style. I looked to Rune, and silently, the confrontation began.

I ignored his question, and put it to him bluntly,”I just don’t get how you could forget,”

To which he just defensively said, “I dunno man, all I know is that the cube came out two months ago”.

At that point I began asking him about lansmash, about our rival crew ‘Tech team’ who are based in Brisbane, about the game cube in general, and all the while, trying to point out contradictions in his memory.

”So when did the Wii come out?” I asked K-0S”,

”December…last year” he replied, and when I pointed out the fact that the Wii is the successor to the cube, a blaring contradiction in his memory was pointed out.

Then Rune joined in, “Don’t you remember how much we played PSO?”

Phantasy Star Online has been a crew favourite of recent years, we used to always spend weekends together, playing that game for ages. We started playing it at least three or four years ago.

You could see it, he thought hard, and he did remember. He remembered the sheer amount of time he had spent playing it, and time printing out sheets of weapon and item drop rates whilst at school.

He even remembered the amount of time we had spent playing Mario Party as well, the good times spent playing that late at night.

At that point we decided to leave for his girlfriend’s place, a half-hour walk from the mall.

At that point we had established that the cube had indeed been out far longer than his memory told him, he told us as he left that he distinctly remembers going out for lunch with his sister and his father, neither of whom he lives with, and then buying a game cube. In actuality, as we tried to point out to him as we walked to his girlfriend’s house, was that the cube has been out for roughly 6 years now, a fact that seems plausible to him now with the revived memories of playing the cube years, but that this mental block of his won’t allow otherwise.

As we walked out, he started to speak out, saying what bits and pieces he would remember,

“Wavedashing is where you slide along the ground”
“Tipping…is done with Marth, with the tip of his sword”

But he still didn’t remember L-cancelling. At that point I started asking him about friends we had online, namely Sliph and Felix from www.gaiaonline.com, and all the times we had spent in our online gaia guild for our crew named ‘The Ward’. He remembered Sliph and Felix, and our guild, but not what it was about, that being a guild for our smash crew.

We made it to his girlfriend’s house, her mother less than pleased with the two tag along’s K-0S had bought with him, but for me, I could care less at that point, I was more concerned for K-0S than imposing myself on his girlfriend’s mother.

When we walked in I saw it, the stairs. A nasty wooden set that looked pretty **** steep to me. They went up one way, then turned to come back the other way as it lead onto the second floor and into undeserving’s room.

There was one thing left to do. To actually play smash. I hoped that playing smash would indeed trigger something in K-0S’s head. K-0S, after getting a Wii, gave his cube to undeserving, so we pulled it out, smash still inside it, and began to play.

The fact that the save undeserving had was incomplete didn’t help. Somehow she had Mewtwo and not Game & Watch. Also she had only half the stages unlocked.

K-0S chose Shiek, the character he swore by before we started playing with advanced techniques and knew what a wavedash was. I chose Falco, the main I’ve played the longest and best.

After setting it to a four stock match, he went straight for Hyrule castle. To which I was like ‘WTF man, banned’. Of course, amnesiac as he is, he had no idea of banned stages, and was also like WTF.

We restarted and I chose Pokemon stadium instead. The match began and from the get go, I didn’t pull any punches, I went in with all manor of Falco’s flashy combos, short-hop lasers to Shine, JC, Dair, fast fall, up-tilt, Dair etc.

After the first stock, K-0S was in complete disarray, “Ease up man!”

”What? This is how I’ve always played,” he on the other hand, was playing like he did about five years ago.
“I didn’t even know you could play Falco like that,” we continued on.

So I replied, “I’ve always played like this, and you always kept up with me, you always managed to beat me with Doc,” he was confused about this too, swearing he had never played Doc, despite having mained him all these years.

We played more and more matches, Rune also playing some matches with him too. We began to remind him about the tournaments we had at school, which we usually had on the last days of school, which he also began to remember.

Finally, an idea came to me. “K-0S, use Doc,” he skeptically agreed, not knowing what to expect as he didn’t believe himself to be a Doc main at all, and I chose Doc as well.

We ended up playing on Mute City, and as per normal, I was playing with all the Doc tech I knew, whilst K-0S struggled with his inability to play like he could only a week ago.

Then suddenly something in his brain must have snapped. “Hey wait, wait,” he said. Suddenly, he began short hopping, dash dancing, and Wavedashing all over the place, he was doing it like a mad man. Suddenly all of his Doc tech returned to him, and even though he still didn’t remember ever being that good with Doc, he was able to play him with a (Australian) high standard of skill, coming back to beat me.

It was amazing to see, we had broken some kind of barrier in his mind, and it something had come back to him. I can’t imagine how it must’ve been for him, suddenly having this ability to play a character, and using techniques that for the life of him, he couldn’t really remember well.

I kept saying to him after that, “You’ll remember, something will happen, and then it’ll just click, and you’ll remember everything”, and I believe it too. Something’s gotta give sooner or later, and I hope its sooner.

After that, you could see it on his face. He was really struggling within himself and his thoughts, he just stared downwards, trying his hardest, but it still won’t come to him.

At that point we had overstayed our welcome, and we decided to leave, but with every intention of seeing him again as soon as possible.

It was then as Rune and I began walking back to my place I decided I would post this on smashboards.com

It was also when I decided that he DEFINITELY wasn’t faking it. When we talked about Game & Watch, he kept referring to him as Wazoo, which is what Nintendo gamer magazine called him 6 years ago. That was definitely the clincher for me.

I don’t know what good can come to this, but I just feel that this is too important to keep to myself. Sorry K-0S.
