Ness or Lucas?

The original plans for SSBM were to have Lucas, the main character from Mother 3(a game planned for n64), replace Ness. Since the game Mother 3 was cancelled due to the failure of Nintendo 64DD, the character Ness was kept in SSBM. Now that Mother 3 has been released in Japan for the GBA, could it be possible that Ness may be replaced?

Hopefully the chances are low. I like Lucas. He's a nice protagonist, but replacing Ness (who is the one and ONLY main hero of the Mother series that America has seen, or will ever see) with a character that Nintendo has pointedly decided not to send over to the states seems like it will overly alienate the western audience, especially people who grew up with EB but didn't necessarily know that it was actually a series of games.

I'm all for one of the Mother 3 support characters getting in (Kumatora, Claus, Boney/Bonnie and my personal favorite, Duster) and if they manage to find a way to include Lucas without cutting Ness out of the deal, I'm all for it, but if Ness goes, then I personally won't be able to enjoy the game as much as I would have if Ness was in it. Ness is that important to me.

Ness must stay. It's not fair to replace a character for a flavor of the week that one country has seen. Ness has been in both Smash Bros. games and it's only right that he remain there. It was amazing to the Earthbound fans upon discovering that Ness was in SSB64. Could you imagine what removing him now would do? Besides. Putting Lucas in the game at the cost of Ness only serves as the salt in the wound for Americans who wanted to see Mother 3 over here. It's like, "here he is, no you can't have him, and now yours is gone."

Ness is awesome, and he's the only Mother protagonist that has ever met America's gaze. Replacing him with a Japan-exclusive character would be a turn-off to Americans.

I've heard of a couple somewhat unofficial statements that Ness is confirmed as in Brawl.

One is from an unknown source allegedly stating that although not all ssbm characters are in, all ssb characters are, including Ness.

The other is dated yesterday as seen on Starmen.net through an interview with Miyamoto through Game Informer. The article looked reasonable, although the person conducting the interview brought up Ness returning as common knowledge, and Miyamoto acknowledged it as such.

Can anyone verify either the ssb character statement or Game Informer's credibility, so that I can sleep at night without the fear of Ness being sucked into some sort of black void where all non-smash characters cry for all eternity?

Lucas could show up as a costume for Ness if that feature is ever put in. I guess most people would come out as winners except for those who hates Ness for whatever reason or wants Lucas to play different... *runs*

Ness being part of Original 12 + Him returning in Melee + Lucas being an japan-only character = Very High Chance Ness is in Brawl.

Either, but hopefully both. As much as I do love EB, I really wouldn't mind seeing Lucas in Ness's place. A character who plays a little differently than the whole PSI-kid thing from the Mother series would be nice...but I don't know if we can expect that. ;P

yeah, i'm sure he won't be replaced at all. I'm really glad to see they decided to have lucas though because i'm hoping it means that they're thinking of localizing mother 3 for the US.

Seriously. Whats with all the Ness hate? Just cause Lucas was supposed to be in Melee. They probally could've added them BOTH and screwing over Pichu. That would work. Ness was top tier if I'm not mistaken in the 64 game. He was one of the original 12, hes unique from LUCAS. LUCAS AND NESS ARE UNIQUE FROM EACH OTHER. GOT IT?

It would be awesome for Lucas to use a Yo-Yo and Bat aswell as Ness. I can see the different attacks they could do with them so they dont seem alike. However, Lucas could always use Metal Poles/Wands/Scepters/Rods.

It seems Bat really isnt Lucas's main weapon though. It seems as if Rods/Poles are one of his main weapons.


Also, how will Lucas be UNLOCKED... perhaps from a character from his OWN SERIES.

Lucas's main weapon is a pole but he can also use bats and yoyos. He also has all of Ness's PSI moves (though they changed PSI Rockin's name to PK Love).

Just cause they have the same PSI moves, there are still alot from Ness that could be used. PK Ice? Anything else? I can see.
