I've been floating around here for a while, mostly for the Jigglypuff advice, but I finally realized that stalking only gets me victims and not progress, so I finally joined. I'm a sort of an odd ball, so don't expect half of what I say to make much sense. But at least I'm friendly to the neighbors and I'm house trained.

I may be a little different from typical Brawlers in that I do not just Brawl competitively or Brawl for fun, I have also been known to mix it up a bit by actually trying to defeat my opponents through unusual methods, such as jumping over the edge as Mario, flipping a Bowser, and then falling alongside him. If you've seen a player, whom when seeing a Meta Knight, runs up to the other non-Meta players, lets them hit him, and then runs off the stage, that's me. (I do not hate Meta knight users, they can use them all they want, but the others are going to get free points to even the score.)

I do play competitively, as Jigglypuff and/or Toon Link. I have taken care of a few MKs and Snakes, but I'm obviously not the greatest. So, I'm here to hopefully learn some new tricks and maybe someday pull out sliding upsmashes with ease.

Link to original post: MtF - The Transition Story (Part 1: The Timeline & January, the month of hell)

It's hard to know where to begin my story. Even as I sit to write this, I'm attempting to come up with a pithy summary for my current situation that would convey some of its depth. I'm sure that the topic title will come to me in the same way the rest of this story - and truly, most of my writings - do: completely unplanned.

In December of 2008, I began to open a door for myself. A door between two different versions of me. The "safe" version was the one I left behind. That version was known as Adam to some, and Sir 0rion to others (both to others still, and by more names than that). That was the male version of me. The one I had grown up 2 and a half decades being. It was the version of me that was content to live with his parents, yet had wild ambitions beyond what most people would realistically expect. Adam was a person who had no qualms in considering himself to have something deep inside that set him apart. And for all I know, maybe he was right.

When I walked through that door, it was to become the brand new version of me. The marker on the doorway reads "Katherine," though I also go by Ryusuta and a lot of other names. A person perhaps a little more focused, and a little less extravagant with her self-perception.

Okay, so perhaps "doorway" might be a little misleading. The shift between the two versions of me hasn't occurred like opening a door, stepping through, and being on the other side. It's been more like opening a door into an unlit hallway and working your way through it. Because there isn't a set point I can decide where Adam ended, or will end, and Katherine begins, or will start.

Poetic license and symbolism aside, I'm talking about the process I began at the absolute end of 2008 - the process of transitioning from male to female.

And no, I still haven't thought of a topic title.

Life has been... complex... since I made that final decision at the end of that year. Soon following it, I took a totally uncharacteristic voyage to live with someone I didn't even know in person down in Virginia. It didn't work out exactly, but I moved up to Connecticut soon afterward. Sadly, that trip went bad, too, and I had to return to my parents' house in Denver, where I had to keep up my transition in secret until I was finally able to move out on my own.

I know already that there's going to be more to this story that I could possibly include just in one go, but I'm sure I'll be able to come back to it at a later time. For now, I just want to get these thoughts written down so they're not just cycling uselessly through my head.

I'd really rather not discuss my stay in Virginia, except to mention that one good thing about it was that it was the first time I was formally diagnosed with what I knew to be the case all my life: gender identity disorder, or GID. After things went bad toward the end of January, I moved in with my brother up in Connecticut. My brother might be the one person in my family to this day that - while he still doesn't understand my decision, and freely admits as much - is supportive of my ability to make it. To this day, he's the only one to have seen me in girl clothes. And seeing as I was only just starting out, I could only imagine what I must have looked like.

But anyway... I loved my brother and was soooo grateful to him. But it had no chance of working. His "apartment" could only possibly be suited for one person comfortably. Having me there was just too cramped. And worse, there was no job market in New Haven. NONE. Also, I had no car. Three strikes, I'm out.

I had to make the toughest decision since coming out to my family and friends. I had to move back in with my parents.

As terrible of a burden as that was for me, I was glad to be back in Colorado. I knew and loved Denver, and it felt right to be where I could be near my friends. The former part still holds true. The latter... well, it does and it doesn't. But I'll get to that later.

My parents in the past decade or so have fallen into a really religious conservative kick. With my dad, I fear it borders on slight lunacy. He's convinced that God fixed him when he was a teenager and cured him of being gay. *Sigh*

But to make a long story at least slightly shorter, they would have none of my transitioning. So I told them nothing of it. Don't get me wrong - I certainly didn't keep anything secret. They simply didn't ask, and I didn't tell. (Gee... I feel as though I've heard of that somewhere...)

My parents knew that I was occasionally seeing a therapist, and it eventually got through to them that it was a therapist that specializes in GID and transitioning. What they didn't know was that while I was staying with them, I had already begun to take hormones regularly and was working on picking up a few girls' clothes here and there.

Time took time, and a lot of things happened. Instead of putting my degree in broadcasting into something worthwhile, I ended up getting a crummy job working security for a swimming pool during the summer, a parking garage for a few weeks following that, and then a business complex.

Finally, at October of 2009, I was introduced to Mei, who was willing to sublet her house to me for a price I could actually afford. And that's where I've been traversing the symbolic hallway ever since.

So, this has been the absolute skeleton of what I've been going through. The basic timeline, essentially. The difficulties along the way are something I feel deserve blog entries all on their own, but I figured this would make a good starting point for my story.

Since I'm writing this here, though, allow me to talk about last month. Because it still blows my mind just what's happened in that time.

So, I'm on the verge of living full-time as female. I'm gradually getting more confident in my appearance, and I don't seem to be attracting any unusual attention (which could be seen as good OR bad, but is irrelevant at the moment). The point, though, is that pretty much everyone I care about knows me in person as Kat (which is what most people call me now).

I have a sister, who has long-since departed for Missouri. I'll say around 2003 or so at a guess. We basically never spoke to each other except snippits here and there. I told her about my plans to transition, and I'm fairly certain she didn't pay much heed. Well, fast forward a year or so later to last month. I receive a very disturbing message from a person I don't know on my Facebook account reading (verbatim quote):

"CALL YOUR REAL SISTER"

Yeah... that was certainly nice and cryptic. I asked who it was, and the person said it was her cousin-in-law. Which made SOME sense, since the person apparently lived in Missouri as well. So, after some discussion with that person and some deliberation on my part, I eventually called my sister.

What do you think I heard?

A reassurance of her support and love?

An expression of concern for my well-being?

A query as to what she might do to make things easier for me?

No. She picked up the phone, and immediately started screaming at me through a rain of tears. She told me (and this is a direct quote with no embellishment or change in context on my part whatsoever) that her little brother was dead. She said that I was completely and totally dead, and that she couldn't mourn my death because she has no grave where she could put any flowers. She asked how I could be so selfish... how I could hurt her like this... how I could scare my nephew away from his grandparents by being trans (it didn't occur to her that by this point I had long-since moved out). She insisted that I tell her if it was her fault, and told me that she would never, EVER call me by any name other than Adam.

It wasn't a fun conversation.

Oh, but that's not all! You remember the low-end security job I mentioned earlier? I was fired from that job. Apparently the client supposedly complained that I wasn't unlocking certain doors in the morning. A complaint which made little sense, because the layout of the buildings is such that if you unlock one door, you have to go through and unlock the middle doors and then come out through the end, so that it's pretty much impossible to miss the middle ones.

Even worse, no one from the company had bothered to investigate those complaints to see if they were legitimate. I was given a "final warning," and then a week later (maybe less), I was given my walking papers. What a great month! Thank goodness that's all that...

...Nope. I got three tickets in January. THREE TICKETS. The first ticket I got because a brake light was out. Instead of giving me a warning (I didn't know about it, and we were like 2 blocks from an auto store), BAM. 100 dollar fine. This was in between my "final warning" and my pink slip. The second one I got days later for allegedly going 12 miles over the speed limit. Something like 47 in a 35. I don't remember exactly without looking. Even with an early payment, it's a 2-point penalty and a $120 fine, so I'm debating whether I should take it to court and see if I can get the points knocked off in a plea bargain. I'm... *cough*... not counting on it. The third and final ticket I received when a cop pulled me over ALLEGEDLY for speeding, but he decided to "give me a warning on that" and ONLY wrote me a ticket for my tail light. Which was working. And red. With nothing wrong with it. At all.

Do you want the icing on the traffic cake? I'll let you count the number of tickets I've had before Janurary. That's right, count them again.

ZERO.

In one month, I go from a PERFECT traffic record to having three tickets.

Disowned by my sister. Lost my job. Three tickets totaling over 300 dollars. Last month was very, very bad.

So, I'll leave my long, long story at this breaking point for now. I have plenty more to say - BELIEVE me - but I'll save it for another time. In the meantime, I've got some Sluggy Freelance to read, maybe a Game Boy Color Game to play, and my back hurts. I'll write again soon.

I've been sitting and thinking some more, and after lots of practice, lots of beatings, and lots of learning I think it's time to throw out a few more of my thoughts on advancing Samus' metagame. I've done these before and all I'm trying to do is shed light on aspects of samus that I think could help her in brawl.

In no way are these the final say of Samus metagame. In fact, some of these may sound strange or downright wrong to you. Feel free to discuss/disagree or add to these. I really want to hear your thoughts

1. Jab Cancelling for close combat
You want a quick way to annoy your opponents that use the short or fat characters that beat you close range? Start jab cancelling to more jabs and then mix in a finishing blow. Try it on Ness/Lucas/Squirtle/Pikachu... but most importantly destroy Game and Watch with it. I have one video reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgctAjNVnus

For some reason the jab cancel can't be stopped effectively by G&W. All they can do is either take the beating or run/shield and roll away.

What's more, jab cancelling opponents in the air is nasty. You can often get two to three jab cancels in before finishing with something. If they don't have a fast aerial they can't do much. You can even jab cancel the heavier characters -> anyone without a QUICK aerial or jab themselves can be frustrated pretty fast. I don't know exact frame data but test it yourself and see what works.

I got the idea oddly enough from watching HugS play Melee Samus against SilentSpectre and absolutely punish his shield with jab cancels. We can't do it as effectively, but it's still great. Jab and then run away even.

2. Wittling away damage
Samus is known for being the character that racks up damage slowly and then tries to hit a KO move to finish them off really late. That's the usual idea to wittle away at the percentage with low-risk, low-percentage moves like uair, ftilt, zairs, small charge shots and missiles. This is fine, and I definitely agree with it for the patient samus.

But if you wind up behind in a match or just like to be a TAD bit more aggressive, I've started to change that wittling into taking mass chunks out of their %s.

+ D-throw -> Fair or Plasma shot for easy damage at low percents
+ Charged dsmashes (I got this idea from n00b/NO-IDea) works CRAZY well against opponents. Racks damage up fast!
+ Use Dtilt and full plasma shots at earlier/mid percentages to get that fresh 14%/25% on them. Then use smaller moves to refresh them. They don't KO until ~ 115% anyways.
+ Charged fsmashes for tech chasing (but only if you predict right)
+ Jab-cancel -> hard hitting smash

Honestly this has worked wonders for me. I'm still wittling away the % but at a much faster rate, so I'm lessening the deficit I have to catch up to. Honestly the dsmashes and throw combos catch opponents by surprise.

Also start "double punishing" super laggy moves. By that I mean use frame trap moves to punish an opponent for really stupid moves. I.e. an Ike charges his forward smash and is left a sitting duck. Instead of just punishing with maybe a charge shot or fsmash or zair... use a sh super missile -> charge shot instead. Or sh missile -> grab -> pummel -> release -> charge shot. Maximize percentage punishment

3. TETHER CANCEL
Can't stress this technique enough. And I don't say that because I discovered it...
It's ridiculously good. Opponents don't see tether cancelled attacks coming I don't care how experienced they are. Now you have an advantage because they have no idea how you are coming back on the ledge. Practice it for 10 minutes or so and find applications for it, but it is an INTEGRAL part of Samus' ledge and recover game. Tether Cancel to plasma shot is legit for just punishing foes. Tether cancel -> fair or dair is great for mixing up your recovery and beating up on opponents who THINK they are going to ledge guard you by using a move right at the edge of the stage. Tether cancel -> screw attack is perfect for opponents who try to fall with you and hit your tether recovery.

Please use it.

4. Double super missile
I learned this from a smasher who likes to use Samus sometimes. Short hop and missile cancel a super missile then when you land immediately super missile again. This is not a NEW technique per se but I don't see any Samuses use it, and it makes a NASTY wall because they can't jump and dodging would get you hit by one of the missiles.

5. Down Smash
Is really a lot more useful than I thought it to be, even when NO-IDea tried to stress its' usefulness. It has deceptive range and because it hits twice it can be a little safer if an opponent is trying to land right on top of/next to you or is shielding/rolling right near you: the second hit catches them off guard. It racks up damage very nicely and for some reason opponents don't see it coming when its' semi-charged. Seriously they get hit by semi-charged dsmash a lot haha. It's also probably our best move to get the opponent out of your face: it has the most shield knockback.

One last thing is if you use Morph Ball Bombs.... when you land after dropping the bomb, immediately use dsmash but with down on the analog stick and A (instead of c stick) and she will immediately dsmash. Might be useful later.

6. Frame Traps
Frame traps aren't necessarily guaranteed combos, but the opponent has to be MAD quick with their reaction time if they want to escape them. We gotta know these like the back of our hands because they can make some matchups a lot easier. We have GOT to know the zair -> grab frame trap because that makes Samus one of the few characters with a legitimate grab setup. I'm also looking at fast fall uairs -> anything fast because she can combo and even KO opponents with it (try fast fall uair to fsmash angled up against fat/tall characters).

A new type of frame trap I'm finding is a late dash attack to jab cancels. As stated before you can have a lot of fun with jab cancels when the opponent is in the air. It's especially nasty if you can find a way to dash attack them while they are over a ledge. Then you can Dash attack -> jab cancel once or twice -> falling uair to knock them further off the ledge and possibly gimp.

We need to know these frame traps

7. Smash DI -> Uair to break multihit moves
I think it's self explanatory but it's truth as well. I usually SDI up while mashing Cstick up. It breaks falcos' multihit neutral A, peaches' dair, pits side b (if really good) and more.

8. Don't be afraid to "reset your spacing"
You guys know this but I'm learning it more and more. If you've been playing the match right, in most cases the opponent should be frustrated at the semi-wall you've been throwing at them consisting of projectiles and zairs. Resetting my spacing (coughrunningawaycough) allows me to take a breather and put the opponent in a lot more pain because they have to find a way to get past my wall of projectiles all over again. It lets me charge a plasma shot too. Tools to reset spacing:

+ Simply run away to the opposite side
+ Throw in mini-charge shots and ftilts to discourage approaches
+ Grab them and throw them either behind you or throw them up (NO-ID great idea)

The idea is to get them so frustrated they try to approach hastily, and that's when they make a mistake and you punish them. Drop the projectiles and smash/dtilt/uair->chain them (depending on what you want to do).

9. CONDITION your opponents
Two people gave me great insight on why Samus is a bad character. Samus is a very TRICKY character in that she has a lot of combos and techniques that catch the opponent off guard (uair combos, zair frame traps, ledge trixies). But because she KOs so badly, the match goes on very long and the opponent figures her out before she can get the win.

We can use that to our advantage if we just start conditioning the opponent to react to moves a certain way. Dthrow the opponent and jump after them -> charge shot or fair. Do that a couple of times until they start air dodging. Then wait for the air dodge and punish them.

Recover with a tether grab a couple of times. Note the very first time that the opponent successfully punishes you or tries to jump down and punish you. Next time tether cancel the ledge grab and hit them with an aerial or special attack. Then tether cancel and mix in a recovery. Now they don't know what's going on. Jab cancel the opponent and run away (if they can't punish it). Do that until they chase after you. Now start faking like you're running a direction then pivot grab them.

It's really like mind games, only you're forcing them to think a certain way. Conditioning them to react to one of samus' many tricks, but then using more tricks to offset that.

10. KNOW YOUR KO PERCENTAGES
Ridiculously important. We need to know the KO percentages of our best killing moves to make sure we're not fighting too long and getting killed early. If nothing else, KNOW THE KO PERCENTAGES FOR DTILT. I actually write mine down on a notepad and take them to tournies, it's that important to me. Remember Metaknights' KO % without DI - 116%

I try to combine most of these in my matches now and am finding mad success. Some of these tips are more important than others IMO (especially 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9 and 10) and can make even the Metaknight matchup easier. I'm going to run back to NO-IDeas' and n00bs topics on Samus metagame as well and see if I can brush up on those important basics as well. Hopefuly will have good results to bring back to you all.

So today, I realized, I greatly enjoy playing with lucario. So I played my friend, a diddy player, and I played a lot better against him with Lucario. Not because he doesn't know how to fight against lucario, because he does, but yeah..

Annnnnnnnnyways, I just have a couple of questions and stuff.

What's the match up ratio?

Any fun tricks against them?

I mostly stay with in reaction range, ON the ground, (I have like no air game) XD

Any general advice?

Link to the Diddy MU thread?

You two crossed the line this past weekend. I had just won CGC, I bought my victory steak at Chilli's, and I had thoroughly enjoyed about half of it. I was saving the other half for when I got home...and what do you know?

I have about 1 bite left of my steak, cuz Dunskies and Lucky thought it'd be a good idea to take a few bites. News flash gentlemen, you two just F***ED up.

You can make fun of my mom, you can lie about my d*** size, but one thing you DO NOT do.... is you DO NOT eat another man's steak.

Remember what happened to Lovage when he only just TRIED to order my burger WITH lettuce after I specifically told him "NO LETTUCE"? I'll tell you what happened:

One day, per my revenge, he ordered extra large fries and instead got MY extra small fries because I felt he needed to be punished.

If you don't understand the severity of the situation, I allowed him to pay about 2 extra dollars for fries. I then ate all of his fries in his presence, and forced him to eat my 99cent fries. I'm pretty sure I threw away whatever fries I didn't finish. All because he only tried to f*** with me. "But hugo I didn't actually do anything!?". Yeah, well attempted murderers never actually murdered anyone either, but they still get f***ed.

What Dunskies and lucky did is deplorable, and they shall pay the ultimate price. They had the nerve to reprimand me for trying to take a bag of chips that was left in his car as munchies for the trip. He told me "that's grimey hugo, you can't take the chips to your house, they're for us". He said this when he knew full well he just ate about 5$ worth of my steak.

Pay back is a *****, stay on your toes gentlemen.

RULES
General (apply to all events unless otherwise noted):

* 8 minute time limit on all matches

* Items off

* Ties are broken by remaining lives, then %. If both criteria are tied, then the Sudden Death match will be played out.

* First stage is random from the Neutral stages listed below.

* Each player is allowed to reset the random stage once; this forces a new random stage to be picked. If the new stage has been previously reset
by either player during the same set, that stage is reset again. (Random Stage Reset)

* The loser of the first match will announce a new stage to play on for the next game. The winner will then be allowed to switch characters,
followed by the loser. Apply the same logic for the third match (and fourth/fifth when applicable) if there is one. (Advanced Slob Picks)

* No stage may be used twice in a single set if the counter-picking player has already won on that stage, unless the opponent agrees to use the
stage again. (Dave's Stupid Rule)

* Double Blind character pick can be called at anytime before the first game of a set starts, and only apply to the first game.

* Each person (or team) may choose one counter-pick stage to be disabled for the entire set at the START OF THE SET, after characters have
been chosen but before the random stage has been picked. You may not ban neutral stages.

* Controller Mods, Glitches (IC Freeze Glitch, Mewtwo Soul Stunner, etc), and tactics used to stall a match (wall-bombing, rising pound), are
banned.

* For doubles: Team Attack will be ON, life stealing allowed.

* Wobbling is banned.

* Bracket matches are best 2 of 3, 4 stock.

* Winners' bracket finals, losers' bracket finals, and championship sets are all best 3 of 5.
