  • Alright, let me finish what I was saying. With ASL, we were offering replays of every bracket match, cheaper tournaments, better scheduled tournaments, pizza at the venue, we improved the way we ran tournaments, we created a website with player bios and information, we started a facebook group to help keep people informed of what was happening, and we did all of this starting with about 3 players and branching out to create hype for the entire region.

The natural progression of that has led to better in-state tournament attendance, an almost partnership with the brawl scenes in GA and TN, rapid improvement in our players, and a desire to travel and put ourselves on the map. That led to us wanting to attend TASOL and I, as well as others, see that as an opportunity.

Right now, I see LA on a smash high. BSP and JNig made it into the BBR and players find themselves actually wanting to play. Hell, I'm already working on trying to generate hype in the state with MM call-outs for TASOL. We want LA to become more active and to eventually reach a point where they are willing (and able) to travel out to play with us to match us wanting to travel and play them. We want to expand the group that's playing.

When we come to TASOL, we're bringing about 5 players, but more than that, we're bringing a lot of the stuff that we have implemented to help our tourneys improve. We're bringing our livestreaming gear and are going to get every bracket match saved so it can be uploaded. Regardless of if we come back or if this is the last LA tournament we go to (it will probably be the last one I personally go to so long as MK is legal in the area), we want to supply you guys with the ability to organize and move forward.

So talk to me. I know you at least used to be a big TO in the state of LA. Who else are the main TOs? Am I going to be successful in trying to create a hype train?

I'm also going to PM you something I don't want public yet. I've decided against posting on your wall.
I noticed my break was over and had to haul *** earlier, but didn't want to lose everything I had typed. I'm actually going somewhere with this that has a point about improving the LA community, not just talking about your rationale for the MK ban.

When I go to lunch, I'll finish what I was getting at.
Well, the ban itself is designed to create a new metagame/tournament feel. I'm not going to claim it had a great effect on results in AL/GA, but it did create a different feeling. Using myself as an example, I'm being CPed to stages that people would never have taken me to because I subbed MK. It did set the stage for our local Marth player to become successful when he started improving a few months after the ban took effect because he wasn't playing against Kismet/BigLou/Micaelis MKs.

I've seen the LA scene and I've seen the complainers, but you first have to break the metal you want to reforge. However, you've got to turn up the heat to do that. We lost 2 players and gained 1 over the MK ban, but it wasn't that big a deal here (despite 4 people who were vocally against it). I think that it was in no small part due to the formation of Alabama Smash League. We were bringing SO MUCH MORE to tournaments.

    Gotta go, post again later.
Saw you viewing the LA thread and it reminded me that I wanted to ask you about why you changed your mind on the subject of MK. I recently had to post this and am curious why you think that the reaction to MK ban, after such a short time period, is enough to warrant scrapping the ban.

I would've asked at the time in the LA thread, but that's not at all where I wanted to do it. I don't mind talking about MK with any of the people there who actually care, but I didn't want to deal with the sidelong comments from some of the instigators who start trying to make the pot boil over whenever someone brings up anything controversial about Brawl.
That's a good question Delux lol.

If you ever look at this Ran, I got into contact with LT and I've got BRMs running now, so it's all good. The LT tournaments continue!
Ran, who did you contact to get LAST tournaments up and running? Just because you're gone doesn't mean they should stop. I want to do something for Louisiana Smash.
These MK banned tournaments are great. I"m getting a lot of support from the local communities and a lot of people are showing up. I even got to have Vinnie play at my first one along with the Houston crew.
After the tournament I got the data and I got what I needed to see......I'm gonna make my entire monthly tournaments MK banned.
I jumped on the band wagon as soon as I got the call. Let's do this Ran. Time to change things up.
Don't know if it would've changed much

But if Last V is running Unity, why didn't you get a sticky?
Things like this are normally exciting since they happen so rarely. :awesome:

    *cracks knuckles* I'm ready though!!

Fix your boring sig. This is a million times better and is more flashy. Trust me, it works despite its size.

Edit: Sorry that the clouds came out crappy. Trying to make everything as symmetrical as possible was a challenge.
I'm in Louisiana for now. I dunno if you saw in the LA thread (what a cluster**** thread seriously), but I recently got a bunionectomy. I'm still going through recovery, but I think soon I'll be able to be mobile enough to start doing stuff. Luckily it was my left foot so I guess I can drive places soon. What's up?
I'm so glad you got into the BBR. You easily produce some of the highest quality posts I've seen on the site.
Congrats on getting into the BBR, Ran! Glad to see your knowledge has paid off!
    My "Let's Play" Channel (click)

Just wanted to let you know about my Let's Play series I've got going on. Basically, I play blind playthroughs of video games you guys request and that's it. :bee:

I'm currently playing Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) and Yoshi's Island (SNES) and I've already finished a Mega Man 10 (Wii) LP as well.

Just want to invite you in on the fun if you haven't heard about it. If you like the videos definitely SUBSCRIBE to my channel and post on my wall so we can discuss what other kinds of games you'd like to watch me play!

Thanks for the support. Spread the word!
Naw i think they do, its just their letting emotions/feelings inhibit their deduction skills.
Hey man, I wanted to ask you, how should one seed event? : ] I just wanted to make sure I ask you before I do anything, since you have some experience. : D (I'm reading up on it, but still haha, don't want a disaster)
I was looking forward to meeting you at HOBO 28.

Also, I hope you make it into the Brawl Back Room and great job on "Why Metaknight Makes Bad Players Good, and Good Players Great."
Hey -Ran. I just wanted to ask what you think about my post in your Amateur bracket thread?

It's along the line of "Farm Leagues" and getting lower skilled players (usually ones that just f-smash all day) to get better.

I mean, there are three factors do consider... Price, Difficulty, and Fun. (At first fun starts to be just having fun, but then it starts to be "I like fun but I want to be the better one out of the 4 playing free-for-all" to just playing to win.)

More on that in your thread. : D

I'm just asking your since I don't think people would read what I said, since it was an idea I was throwing out there... It's a pretty big post too haha.
I couldn't say it to you since the thread was closed, but thank you very much for your valuable tips, they are the practical things my friend was looking for. I'll tell him to check your thread.
Ran, could send me those Bowser-Wario replays? I've got a recording device, so I can record and upload them myself.
For Voodoo Smash I'm going to need your help with the brackets. I don't know the PR as well and it's been a long time since I've done any seeding. So I just need help seeding the PR people and making the brackets as fair as possible.
