That's not actually true. Nintendo took interest in the company as soon as it was founded. Former Nintendo executive Shinji Hatano, went to MS and Namco and asked them to create an original RPG for the GameCube, hence the creation of Baten Kaitos.

What would be the point of that? Nintendo already has tons of Mario characters that they don't use, so Geno and Mallow would almost certainly just end up in the vault with the rest. Plus Nintendo and SE already have a working relationship, with regular software releases and shareholding.

Functionally it's Anna, she generally hosts the corporate social media accounts and such. But she's not a mascot in the sense that they'd make her the star of her own spinoff.
