Fighting against CPUs is only good for learning characters and their moves, actually fighting against them is a horrible, horrible thing to do. I play on wifi's with anyone doing 1v3 against taunt parties in the most unfair conditions possible.

If all else fails you could try looking for some custom firmware that works with your router, it could be a firmware issue.

Did you try portforwarding or turning on DMZ if your router has those options? port 1137 both UPD and TCP, make sure it's to your Wii's IP, you might have to make it a static IP Your college could just be blocking the ports nintendo wifi uses when it connects to other players or something...

I can't help feeling bad for the people looking to actually play the game, then they get ganged up on by some douchebags that think they're cool because they can get a KO 3v1 or 2v1 with instakill items. I'd imagine at least one very young child was brought to tears by them. Sad, really.

There really isn't much of a difference so long as every player's internet is fast and stable/they're not playing Japan from America. Brawl's online forces a 2, 3, or 4 frame input delay though. It should only take a game or two to adjust.
