In Brawl, the individual Pokemon were all selectable from the menu, so there is no reason to separate the trio from the character select menu, aside from aesthetic purposes. They were already separate in the character files on everyone's SD card, so balancing could only be done separately...

Well robbing them is all that can be done, right? I'd call it temporarily "banishing" it because you don't actually "steal" anything tangible, just pride. It's a pain going up against someone like Sonic or Mewtwo when playing as a pokemon while the Final Smashes are present, though.
