Nintendo has hit a brick wall.

I wanted to write something up about this, but at the time of the news I was too busy with my schooling to do so. But hey, better late than never, right? So little over a week ago, reports say that Wii sales plummeted. Iwata, the President of Nintendo, says that "the Wii has stalled" and that "games of high demand could not be continually released."

Okay, no, that's not the case. I think that Nintendo has just hit a wall and is pretty **** close to being out of ideas. Think about it, Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, The Metroid Prime Trilogy, what do these all have in common? The billion-dollar answer is that they're all rehashes of some sort. It might be because I'm pretty critical-minded, but I am the only one who thought that Nintendo was running out of ideas when they announced Super Mario Galaxy 2? It's like they're saying "we have no ideas for a fresh and inventive Mario title so we're just going to give you the last game only with more levels and OMG IT HAZ YOSHIZ!1!!1" And they already put out a remake of classic Mario so why must you make a Wii version? No new ideas to milk the Mario cash cow with? And the Prime trilogy, okay, if you can't see how this is a rehash then you should go hit your head against something hard. And let's not forget "play on Wii" or whatever it's called, porting Game Cube games with Wii controls, really, Nintendo? Nintendo has hit a dead end, a good amount of their fan base has left them for Sony or Microsoft, casual gamers (or as I like to call them, "those with the attention span of the Japanese public") seem to have gotten over the Wii and moved on. At this point, it really feels like Nintendo as just hit a brick wall, their casual cash-cows don't seem to be as interested in the Wii as they once were and too many disappointments have caused a number of Nintendo fans to move on.

I already wrote another blog talking about what I think Nintendo should do to try and get their fans back. So I'll keep those comments to a minimum. But with casual gamers getting bored and moving on, "core" gamers giving up and moving on and Nintendo running out of ideas, one must wonder what will happen to Nintendo. I believe that now is the time for Nintendo to get their heads straight and try and earn its fans back with the games that they want to play, not Wii (insert noun/verb here), but F-Zero, Star Fox, and other series. To me, it feels like Nintendo doesn't really know what do with their other franchises besides their three biggest money makers, Mario, Zelda and Pokemon. And even with those, their starting to run dry. As stated earlier, Mario has now become the king of rehashes, Zelda... well, okay, they're doing a great job with Zelda (PEOPLE DID NOT GIVE TWILIGHT PRINCESS A CHANCE) but Pokemon is pretty much the rehash god. So if they're running dry there, then why don't they actually give what fans are asking for and make new games from their other franchises? Actually, at this point it would be nice to see Nintendo put some effort out and actually make several new franchises rather than just making the same games year after year. However, that new Punch Out game was a step in the right direction. Ultimately boiling everything down, I think that if Nintendo doesn't get its act together, then by the time that next-gen rolls around we may find that the Wii ends up being Nintendo's last console.

It is a solid game for sure, but that is hardly innovative of HAL, especially considering that they have a freakin Wii game that has been in development for over 5 YEARS.

I'd still give it a higher score because it is Kirby, and I <3 Kirby.
Oh, for sure, and that's exactly why I don't intend to get SSU until I get the original.

But that's not at all what IGN seems to be basing their review on, and that's evident by their wrap-up with the individual points denoted. Otherwise I wouldn't be too surprised by a low score.

Wow, they gave SSU only a 7.9, and RD only an 8? I haven't personally played Radiant Dawn (...I really need to beat PoR quicker) but I've heard really good things about it. I haven't played Super Star Ultra either, and don't intend to buy it anytime soon, because I want the original instead, but I've heard good things about the game -- I'd imagine rightly so, since the original was quite well-liked.

Also, I will never trust IGN for anything in the world ever again (not that I trust video game reviews as it is).

They gave all of the Ace Attorney games high 7's except Apollo Justice, which still only got a 8.3.

There are many problems with their review scores, but that stands out to me as being the worst.

    ^This.

IGN doesn't appreciate anything on the Wii anymore after Muramasa. 8.9/10 on a Mario PLATFORMER is too biased. Metroid Prime Trilogy (even though it still gets 10/10) would made a much better online game and they know it.
  5. The IGN review is a bit bizarre. He calls it the best 2d mario yet, they proceeds to give a score of 8.9.

I swear this same guy gave a really high score to the DS NSMB as well (and that game sucked). Oh well.
  6. The only place I read reviews at is GameFAQs since IGN really only praises big titles. Gamefaqs is full of mixed opinions and reviews are made by casual gamers.

And yes, gamespot is the pitchfork of reviews.

Yeah. When I quote someone, I generally try to keep the original colors but if there's a huge gradient in the post then that's really just not an option.

But yeah, that review was definitely a positive review except for that observation which Nintendo's learned their lesson on, next gen we'll see decent online play I hope, Xbox Live has it down pat, they should take their ques from them, sadly.

His other problem was "lack of innovation" due to not being able to save replays, even though the game itself employs several snippets for viewing pleasure/idea generation. GOD, so whiny. He even had to cite Brawl as being an example of what to do, it's NOT BRAWL! Maybe Brawl is the best Wii game, or something, so everything compares to it? Another Meh. Besides he started off all happy about it being a return to 2D and away from 3D, then he compared as a sequel to Galaxy... ugh. This is why I don't read game reviews.
The review really was quite stupid.

It spends the first 3/4 of the review praising the game for being fun, bringing in new mechanics, etc., then it goes into the last 1/4 of the review acting if Nintendo ruined the game by not implementing replays and by not making it creative enough as a sequel to Galaxy.

First of all, Replays are cool, but they're basically as far on the spectrum of "extra". Second of all, this is a sequel to NSMB for DS. Galaxy 2 is a sequel to Galaxy.

If you use logic for a moment you'll realize that merely because the game is on Wii doesn't mean it's a sequel to the previous Wii game, especially since it's already getting a sequel.

But then again, logic would make sense and nobody wants that.

  9. Gamespot is the Pitchfork of video game reviews, and IGN reviews are just silly. They praised a Boy and his Blob heavily, and then it ends up with a 6.something the review didn't add up with the score at all.
