Updating the Smiles

Yeah, those things.

A few of the higher ups in the staff want to update the smile set. This of course means creating and proposing new smiles to the set.

We only want original smiles though. We don't just want people swiping smiles from other sites. If you have an idea for a new smile, be creative and make it yourself. After all, that's what we do in the AE, right? Remember when making smiles to keep in mind a sort of style consistency with the others. Also, if you want to propose a new smiley also include the command for it, like

, or whatever it may be.

Size limit is 32 x 32 pixels. If for some reason you have an idea for a bigger one please explain why it needs to exceed the limit.

Feel free to suggest which smiles you think are pointless/unappealing/need to be gotten rid of.

I'll keep this post updated with people's suggestions regularly.

Sounds fun! Since I've made a request thread in the Sig Shoppe, I should try to give back to the AE. Well, I'll see what I can cook up when I have the time.

Normal smilies appear to be 15x15, so I think I'll work with that size for now.

As for the current ones, :embarrass (embarrassment) should be redone. The other ones you posted are fine in my book. :cool:

(cool) could look better, but meh. Most smilies aren't used enough to matter.

I would say the normal panel of 15 smilies (without clicking the more button) is used the vast majority of the time, so those should be the most focused on IMO.

Anyways, I fiddled around a bit and recolored the embarrassment smiley. How does it compare to the old coloring?

Anyways, I made this too:

It was going to be for embarrassed, but it could also be "nervous" or something. There's no smileys for any scared emotion except

(scared) which could also use a redo.

What program are you using? Creating animations is extremely easy to do in GIMP/Photoshop.

Not sure if Pokemon emoticons count as smiles or not but someone should program Pokemon emoticons for all 649 Pokemon. Right now it only goes up to #99 which is

I agree. 649 might be a bit much though. They should at least have 151 for the classic 1st gen. Then we could just add some of the more famous ones from other gens, like legendaries, starters, Wobuffet, Ambiopom, Marill, Pichu, etc. So maybe just over or close to 200 of them?

Yeah, I was thinking this as well. I'm gonna go try and see what I can make, but it probably won't be as good as the one you already made. I like this one.

Yeah, it actually looks more like a combination of shocked and sad, I guess. I might have to give it another try.

Actually, this looks quite good. The guy actually does look scared. But yeah, the color should probably be tinkered with a bit so it fits with the other smilies. Overall, nice job!

As far as the Pokemon, well I don't even know where those came from or who made them lol. They're not the official RBY game sprites. So if we were to add more I don't know if they'd be in the same style. It would be nice to have all of them, but I think it'd be best to stick with the original 151. Maybe some Pokemon Center Spriters want to take a stab at recreating the style of the others?

A lot of these are looking nice, can't wait to see what others come up with.

Well, this SWF sprite has a white background: :veryconfu

I think the small 15x15 smilies have to have a transparent background, but that doesn't seem to be the case for larger ones. So basically, it depends on the size.

That's one of the ones I actually want to get rid of. That white box around smiles is just... ugly to be frank. Imagine if the really common ones had that around them lol. Regardless of size it's just unappealing to have there.

Yeah, I would tend to agree. I don't really like that one either.

So yeah, the backgrounds on facepalm and puppyeyes should be taken out. I'm not even going to submit my own facepalm; it doesn't look that good.

Yeah, the one I made was my original idea. If you look closely, mine has a bigger smile and a less-perfect border than the one you posted. I'm not suprised somebody has done the idea before though. Reversing the colors is not exactly a revolutionary concept.
