I'm interested to see how everyone has set up their button placements, maybe you can find a set up that I might think is better than mine.
Maybe there's a story behind your button layout?

I use:

Arrows for movement
Num1 as A
Num2 as B
Num3 as R
Num4 as the c button that turns fox green (Don't worry, I don't just use them for pretty colours)
Num0 as the c button that turns falcon black
Num5 as Z
Num6 as L

Reasoning behind the placements is that I can slide my finger quickly down from 4 to 1 when doing shorthop aerials, or just use 0 with my thumb. I will never have to press Z and B at the same time so they are allocated to the same finger.
The reason that they are so cramped up is that we used to play ssb in school on one computer, and it would be easier to squeeze in 4 sets of controls if they are compact like mine.

Now, keyboard users unite!
What do you guys use?

I use a config emulating the position of the buttons of the original controller.

Works SO well when you have to switch to the console occasionally!
Although im planning to buy an adaptor and a hori minipad as soon as possible.

I don't think adaptors work with the Hori Mini Pad. Atleast that's what I've heard from various threads around here.

Arrow Keys for movement.

(button = key)
A = S
B = D
L = W
R = E
Z = A
C-buttons = anywhere. I don't use them in matches (no shorthop :( ). As long as I can use them for colour changes, I'm fine. Every time I tried to add it in... I fail :p

Defaults.

Arrow keys for movement

Z = Z
X = A
C = B
A = L
S = R

delete, home, end, page down for c buttons.
I use almost exactly this. The default suited me nicely, and I can do basically anything I can on the console (which is pretty much everything relevant to competitive play).

My C buttons are L-shift (left), spacebar (down), I (up) and L (right).

Did I mention I usually play on a laptop?

WASD for movement, E=R, Q=L, T=A ,Y=B, U=Z, JHGN for C-stick, with J mostly used when I want to SH.

works brilliantly, and lets the other guy use the arrows.

I'm like, the only half-decent player ever, who mains keyboard (since I have no choice).

RDFG for arrow keys, though you can use WASD.

0OP[ for the c-buttons - I usually use use P to jump.

L for A
K for B
Enter for R
Space for Z - I use this to l-canel.
Comma for Start.
Period for L.

I have everything in an easy to reach distance this way, with my right index finger on l, my thumb on space, my middle finger on P, and my pinky on Enter. I trained myself to djc by typing ppl ppl ppl ppl really fast with my right hand, lol. I thought I would never get used to it, but I adjusted really fast. By the way, there's some things you can do with keyboard some people think you can't, like platform-drop uairs.

q, capslock, a, s = up, left, down, right
enter = c button
num3 = a
num2 = b
num1 = l
` =z

I hold my keyboard controller style.

what about range (sensitivity) of the analog stick? I still haven't found my ideal percentage.

I think mine is at like 5% or something. Or maybe that's the deadzone (don't know the difference).

I don't use KB anymore though.

Seriously? On project64 25% isn't enough to dash or even go through platforms.

not true.. on pj64k 1.3 at least. 25% is the default and works well on keyboard. the only thing you can do, of course, is do immediate tilts or walking immediately

75% range. Suprisingly, the keyboard is pressure sensitive.

I use arrow keys for movement
X for A
C for B
Z for Z
Left Ctrl for L (so I don't accidentally taunt)
D for R
Space for Right C (makes it easier to SH)

(For other games I use A for L and Delete/Home/End/PgDn for C buttons)

Yes it is. You have to press up and A (or down and A) at the exact same time (possibly frame perfect?). Then you'll do that.

It took me a while to get it to work, but I did eventually manage to get it 90% of the time.

How do people do tilts and walk slowly using the keyboard?

Wouldn't this disadvantage alone make it unplayable?

You can do both. Hold the respective direction of the tilt during another attack animation. Once you learn to predict, this works quite well. If you hold left/right the same way you'll walk. On solid ground (the ground you can't fall through) you can use the crouching animation (pressing down) to cancel out into walking or an F-Tilt. D-Tilt can be done on solid ground by holding down, then pressing A after a pause.

It is a slight handicap, but you can work around it quite well.

ah, i see, pretty tricky but i think i'll get the hang of it.
there's still no way to do tilts without buffering is there?
