I don't understand how everybody assumes that Meta Knight is the best character in Brawl when he pales in comparison to the potential lying in some other characters in this game.
It is odd in comparison to other characters that Sheik is neglected as a contender for a top tier character. Sheik is easily the most all around balanced good character in the game and is, by far, a better choice in tournament play than Meta Knight.
Sheik has so many tools at her disposal that it is difficult to argue that she couldn't be a top character at the advanced part of the metagame. She has an amazing projectile, she has multiple approach options, she has an amazing grab, she has powerful killing options, she has amazing combo potential, she has a fantastic recovery, and has ways to escape pressured situations when she is cornered. With her speed and fakeout options, she is able to flexibly approach her opponents and provide a balanced mix of raw priority when she rushes in for a hit, or ways to mindgame her opponents into attacking, then leading into a grab. Her out of shield options are absolutely devastating, and it makes her opponents think twice about approaching with her shield grab. Once she gets a grab, it sets her up for multiple combos and tech chases. At lower percents, it provides the potential to combo, and at higher percents, it leads into her KO options such as upsmash, bair, fair, etc. Her tilts are undoubtedly the most broken ones in the game, with priority equal to smashes and combo potential, which can lead directly into kills. Her aerials are absolutely devastating; upair can effectively combo half of the cast directly into another one, nair out of shield wrecks any approach, fair combos into other fairs and can gimp many characters hardcore, bair provides raw killing strength, and dair mindgames opponents into a missed shieldgrab and screws up their timing. Her needles can effectively stop other projectiles, gimp recoveries, tack on extra damage, and platform camp other characters. In addition, her matchups are super to that of any other character in the game, and she effectively destroys middle tier characters like no other character.
In short, I honestly believe that the smash community is underrating Sheik as a top contender in the current metagame and should further reconsider their placement of Sheik on the current tier list as she is easily the best character in the game.
