Welcome Message

You know it was coming. We deserve it! While we still had no NJ tournaments, we were active in every region we can possibly be to keep ourselves one of the top states around. Now I am here to rescue the NJ community! After a long hard search, I have found a venue that is close enough to NY so they can attend, as well as a venue big enough so we can hold 60+ people. Congrats NJ, the wait is finally over!

Major, and Minor Updates

If you bring a setup and we use it, you will receive a discount!

This does not mean you are guaranteed a setup discount if you brought one. We have to actually give you an OK to use it! Sticking your setup in and setting it up randomly without telling us will not get you a discount! You must bring it and check it in at the T.O desk to see if it will be used. Your name will be written down stating that you have a setup and need to be reimbursed. This also prevents players from getting anything stolen, or people randomly taking it.

Also to note, your setup must maintain there throughout the whole event. If you leave early, you will not receive a setup discount. All setups brought and used will be reimbursed during the end of the event!

Full setup: $5.00
TV: $3.00
Wii/Cube: $2.00

B.Y.O.C. = BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER! The venue will not provide a controller for you nor will we.

  • Double blind character selection may be called for the first match
  • 35 Ledge grab rule (80 for doubles per team). If you time out each other in a match and you go over 35 ledge grabs (80 for doubles) you lose that match.
  • Scrooging: If you fly under the stage, you must land on the stage in order to repeat flying under the stage again. The moving platform, or any other platform that is distant from the stage (IE: Smashvilles Moving platform) does not count as landing on the stage. First offense is a loss of stock, 2nd offense is a loss of match, 3rd offense is a loss of set.
  • All Infinites are banned excluding Ice climbers Chain Grabs, and all small step chain grabs are banned. Wall infinites are NOT banned.

  • Suicide Move Rules: (all situations are when both players are at 1 stock)
  • If a player successfully ends the match with either Bowser or Ganondorf's over B attack by suicide, then the player who initiated the move wins.
  • If a player ends the match by swallowing with Kirby or DDD and falling off the stage and the game counts it as a tie, the player who initiated the swallow move wins. If the player who was swallowed is shown as winning the match (in the instance the broke out right before they died which some people might not notice), then they win.
  • No pausing in-game. Pausing in-game will result in the loss of a stock. The second warning will be loss of a match. The ONLY exception is, if a host(s) asks you to pause.

  • In the event of a TIE at the end of the time limit, the player with the most stocks wins. If both players have one stock then it is decided by percentage. If both players have ONE STOCK and SAME PERCENTAGE the players will quit the SUDDEN DEATH, set the stock to one, and start a match with stage being the same as where they had the tie. This will determine the winner.
  • Each Round is best of three matches; Grand/Losers/Winners Finals are best of five matches*
  • Singles seeding will be based on Region/Rankings with some courtesy to crews – you will be spaced evenly as to prevent playing each other in the first round. Teams seeding will also be seeded in the same way.

General Rules

  • Items are set to off.

  • Neutral Start*: If elected.
  • Standard DSR*
  • Gentleman’s Clause*
  • Forced Character Selection*: Off
  • Matches that time out will be determined by the remaining number of lives, then percentage of the current stock. In the event of a percentage tie, the match should be replayed in full. Sudden Death is not to be played, and will not count.

Additional Rules for Teams Play

  • Team Attack: ON.
  • Life Stealing is allowed.
  • If the game is paused accidentally while attempting to steal a life, the opposing team may deem that life forfeit. Wait until the announcer has finished saying defeated before pressing start, or turn pause off prior to beginning the match.

How to Play a Set

  1. Players select their characters. Either player may elect to Double Blind.
  2. Use Stage Striking* to determine the first stage.
  3. The players play the first match of the set.
Prior to starting this match, either player may elect to Contest Port Priority or Neutral Start.
Note: Only one of these two may be used, as both have a built in Port Selection mechanism using RPS. If there is a situation where a player would like to change which option they elected after playing the game of RPS, it is the opponent’s choice to allow it. The results from the previously played game of RPS will carry over.
  4. Winning player of the preceding match bans a stage/stages (if applicable).
  5. The losing player of the preceding match picks a stage for the next match.
  6. The winning player of the preceding match may choose to change characters.
  7. The losing player of the preceding match may choose to change characters.
  8. The losing player of the preceding match gets first pick of port. Either player may elect for a Neutral Start, but RPS will not be played to determine first pick.
  9. The next match is played.
  10. Repeat Steps 4 through 9 for all subsequent matches until the set is complete.

General Knowledge

Players are responsible for their own general welfare in regard to the tournament environment. In other words, players are responsible for:

  1. Stage List and Rule Set Familiarity
  2. Venue and Entry Fees
  3. Arriving On Time
  4. Maintaining Personal Hygiene
  5. Controllers and Character Knowledge
  6. Minimizing Whining

Tournament Hosts should keep the following in mind:

  • Tournament sets are usually based on bracket positions, which may be seeded at your discretion. If your tournament is to be run in any other format, you must advertise it accordingly.
  • Some kind of stalling prevention is highly recommended. Since a definition of stalling is too potentially ambiguous here, all instances of stalling are determined by you.
  • Unnecessary delays in a set should be discouraged. These delays can occur before (players not playing the set), during (players taking an unnecessary amount of time to counterpick) or after (players not reporting results) a set. The tournament Host is recommended to keep tabs on set status and completion.
  • No more than the previous match should be replayed in the event of a rule violation. It is recommended that any disputes be brought promptly and quickly to the Tournament Host’s attention. Special exceptions may be made to this rule per your discretion.
  • When running a pool, the game count of each set should be recorded (whether the set was 2-0 or 2-1). Ranking in a pool is determined by the number of sets won. There are several methods of determining a tie-break, but each has advantages and disadvantages. It is the TO's responsibility to determine which method they will be using, advertise which method they will be using in the tournament thread, and to consistently use that method across all pools during the tournament.
  • The semi-final and championship sets should be, at minimum, Best of 5.
  • Wireless controllers should be discouraged or banned due to interference, unreliability, and time hindrance.
  • The Tournament Host reserves the right to, at any time, make anyone leave the premises of the tournament.
  • For all Melee Tournaments, Metaknight is banned.

***Term Definitions***

  • Double Blind: Either player may request that a double blind selection occur. In this situation, a 3rd party should be told, in secret, each of player’s choices for the first round. Both players are to then select their first round character, with the 3rd party validating that the character selected is the same as their word.
  • Contest Port Priority: If an agreement cannot be made as to who gets what port, the players may enact a best of 1 game of Rock Paper Scissors. Winner gets their port selection, loser selects any other port.
  • Neutral Start: Either player may enact this rule. Once enacted, both players may only use one of the two “Neutral Starting Positions”. A best of one game of Rock Paper Scissors may be used to determine who gets the higher port. If one player elects to Contest Port Priority and the other elects to Neutral Start, Neutral Start takes priority.
    Singles:
    Stage|Port 1|Port 2|Port 3|Port 4
    FD|*|*
    FoD|*|*
    YS|*|*
    DL||*||*
    BF|||*|*
    PS|||*|*
    Doubles:
    Stage|Port 1|Port 2|Port 3|Port 4
    FD|Team A|Team B|Team A|Team B
    PS|Team A|Team B|Team B|Team A
    BF|Team A|Team B|Team B|Team A
    YS|Team A|Team B|Team B|Team A
    DL|Team A|Team B|Team B|Team A
For the counterpick stages not listed here: Take the 20 seconds to figure it out. This will get updated later.
  • Standard DSR: A player/team may not counterpick to a stage they have won on.
  • DSR Modified: A player/team may not counterpick to the stage they last won on.
  • Gentleman’s Clause: Any stage may be played on if both players agree to it. This rule takes priority over DSR.
  • Forced Character Selection: The losing player once had the option to select Random Stage as their counterpick and remove the option to change characters from the winner of the previous round. This is no longer legal. If a player wishes to select Random Stage as their counterpick, the winner of the previous round may choose to change their character.
  • Stage Striking: Players eliminate stages from the Starter/Neutral list until there is one stage remaining.
Players strike stages in this order:
    Strike|Player 1|Player 2
    Strike 1|*|
    Strike 2||*
    Strike 3||*
    Strike 4|*

Hype. Great to see another series pop up, at an even closer venue :D

Only three neutrals though? :/ I mean, with only nine stages why not make it FLSS? Otherwise I definitely like the stagelist overall.

Thanks!

My crewmate Nakat has a very good Olimar and will be here. I can have him teach you some stuff before singles starts. I'm sure he'll be willing to do so.

The only thing I can say about Olimar, when off stage....don't get caught underneath the ledge under the stage. Your UpB will not go to the ledge from what I've seen. A friend of mine SDs alot like that lol. And the Brawl community is a fun and hysterical community! Alot of inside jokes that pertain to the game, but every joke is to damn funny!

Still curious as to why there are only three neutrals, and why Delfino was taken out for Halberd. Not complaining even though I disagree with the changes, just wondering what your reasoning is.

Any chance of also throwing a P:M side-event at this?

P:M can't happen. I don't have enough time to run it as of right now.

Also, I switch the stages for a couple reasons, but the main freason is the element of a lower ceiling was needed as a CP option. Out of the stages selected, none of them had that as a option for CP. I switched to balance out the fact that some characters should have the option to kill off the top as a bonus to their CP.

I left only 3 neutrals because I feel the neutral set that we have been using is the best one. I don't think I will ever go back to five. I feel YI is not a neutral, and Lylat falls into the same boat. Out of the 3 stages selected, FD should be the only stage that should be conversational, and its borderline at that. Having mroe stages R1 isn't the goal, but rather to have the stage selection as even as possible, and leave the CP's to be what they are: CP's.

Fair enough, although if the tournament finishes well ahead of time I'll probably bring it up for the next one too :p

So... what other stage on the list offers the same traits as Delfino? PS1? >__> Idk, it feels like that argument goes both ways to me.

The goal is to have all the R1 stages be "even", but what is your definition of even? Least shift from the norm for a MU? Wouldn't that logically be achieved by striking from all legal stages, instead of essentially using separate stage lists for each game of the set? I don't see what makes these three stages the "best" aside from being generic flat/plat, but either way what's best is an opinion and therefore always somewhat subjective.

I don't mean to start a debate or anything btw, you're the TO and you do what you do and I'll be there regardless lol. Just curious.

I like the stage list! The fact that there are no "Walk Off" stages is actually really cool. And you've almost eliminated sharking which is cool too. Just gotta get rid of Halberd lol

Lol. I tried to balance it out while having the most amount if stages possible and also by stage depth/size. Mk + others can get a stage to shark on, it is part of the game and wouldn't want to eliminate that option completely, but rather limit how often you can pick a stage to do it on. XD

If you're going to have Frigate and Halberd you should have Delfino as well imo. In fact, Delfino has a lower ceiling in one of the transformations and if I read what you wrote correctly that's what you wanted. Just like how some characters can use low ceiling as a good cp option, other characters can use walkoffs and sharking as good cp options in delfino. It goes both ways.

Exactly, which is why I picked halberd over delfino XP. Its not changing.

Also, to just note, having a lower ceiling one just ONE of the transformations is not what I am aiming for. I wanted to add a consistency with the low ceiling. It came down to what elements I wanted to pick for the stage list to be usable, and how often I want the occurance to happen. I personally feel that halberd is one of the more useful CPs that people don't utilize, and also structured in a proper way which gives an advantage while not compromising too many extra elements. By that logic, I would pick halberd over delfino in a stage list for a tournament more often then not.

It's a pefectly good stage to have as a cp I don't see what's wrong with it ;P but very well this is a start. I'm
just glad you moved away from jpn ruleset.
