Hi guys,

Over the past month, we've had major changes take place. In early December, Smashboards was bought by AlphaZealot. In place, the Senate discussed forum changes. On January 8th, the servers were transferred off of MLG forever. You may even notice the site loads faster compared to when we were on MLG's servers thanks to Paul (TheTempleHost). Smashboards is continuing to change, and in AZ's last site update, he pointed out that we are getting a homepage redesign and an upgrade to the forum. This isn't just an upgrade to the forum, it's a whole new forum software. Enter XenForo, that was made by the original developers that were in charge of vBulletin 2.0 to 3.8, who quit Internet Brands before 4.0. I went through three options as to which one would better suit Smashboards and which one would help Smashboards the most: vBulletin 4, XenForo, and Invision Powerboard. Upon further research, I found that IPB when testing, would not have the best performance in mind, as well as the infrastructure to maintain the site. vBulletin was bought by Internet Brands, and released with 4.0, which not only would've been absolute hell on the server performance but between hundreds of bugs, exploits and tested benchmarks, it would not be the right fit alongside the controversy. In the end, I choose XenForo because of its clean code, its fast performance, and its social networking features. It has been announced for two years that vBulletin 3.8, the software we are using now, will not be receiving any new features or bug/exploit patches, meaning we are at a risk and cannot stay on vBulletin.

Keep in mind I made a proposal to switch to XenForo on April of 2011, which was 21 months ago. During this 21 month period, we were stuck in limbo because of a lack of communication between MLG and the Senate, and the Smash community at large, which included much needed upgrades and features. A lot of our current software can still be exploited and currently have a lot of security holes, including in our forum system and blog system. With our forum update and new home page, Smash News will not be relegated to a subsection of the forum! We are the safest on XenForo security-wise. With XenForo's "ElasticSearch" replacing our current search software Sphinx Search, you can now search for three-character words like "lux", "joe", "m2k" and "bio", you namesearchers you. :p Now, we are not able to get search up right this instant because, in order for that to happen, this would cause approximately 50 hours of downtime. Because of this, we're waiting on the completion of the new forum to re-introduce search, as that same process would only take 30 minutes.

Here are some new forum features to expect:

  • Search will include three-character terms, as mentioned above.
  • XenForo includes a like system, so you may "like" users' posts.
  • The login and registration page is improved. You can login without leaving the page, and you can link your forum account to your Facebook to log in with Facebook.
  • Alerts. Alerts let you know when somebody has replied to a thread you're "watching" (aka subscribed to), quotes you, likes your post, posts on your wall (your "Profile Page"), have a new follower or trophy, etc.
  • Private messages have been updated to a new conversation-style message system. It is now "Private Conversations". This way, you do not get a whole bunch of nested quotes when messaging each other. You may also include more than one person in a conversation.
  • The Friends system of vBulletin is now becoming the follower system. Follow people you know for status updates, blogs, etc.
  • Reporting a post will ensure that you get a response to your report. A moderator will now answer to a report saying that the thread has been locked, and you may add additional information.
  • User Blogs will be gaining its own blog system, replacing the current Drupal & forum link.

There's many more that I can't list, as it's too long, but those are the major changes.

There will be some missing functionality as we transition to XenForo, these include Brawl Albums, Custom Stage Viewer and Live Topic. We will attempt to get all three up as soon as we can.

Within this timeline, I expect to be done in 2-3 weeks, with the site conversion expected anywhere between February 8th and February 15th. I will also be intermittently posting screenshots in the announcement thread detailing progress, and inviting staff to beta test before rollout.

Finally, please support Smashboards by getting premium membership! The money you donate goes towards Smashboards' server costs and the funds needed to help transition from vBulletin to XenForo. Thank you!

may have asked this last time, but will current threads / posts / stored private messages have a chance of being altered when this happens?

This is pretty awesome :D.

Chat would be nice too xD. Although I remember us having one, maybe it'll be one that people actually use when the site isn't down :p.

This all sounds great. I just hope you guys don't decide to purposefully remove features in this process. Good luck.

That's what I'm saying rjg
I don't want this to turn into reddit or facebook
if we have likes we need UPBOATS too

What if we added only a dislike feature, so rather than encouraging people to obsessively attention ***** for likes a la facebook, they'll avoid ****posting so they don't go into some depressive low about their number of dislikes.

I find liking posts very intriguing for my tastes, as clicking it makes giggle! ohohohohohohohohohhohohoh.

No.

Jokes and stuff aside, I don't really care. I'm still pretty excited about this update.

How are likes any different than the rep system that everyone hates so much?

I'm sure Bio will correct me if I'm wrong, but likes are tied to individual posts, not the person who made them. (IE, my hilarious reply to a thread got 5 likes, and is only shown anywhere on that individual post.)

They also don't allow you to increase the weight of your likes by having more, and you can't then get a handful of friends, upvote each other, then go on a -liking spree, nuking people's rep.

Think of it as an alternative to quoting a post and just saying "This" or "lol"

heres the thing though

i always look at the page without seeing who posted what(with color turned off of course) so i can look at every single post in an unbiased manner. then, i look at who posted what. unless there is a clear way to avoid looking at likes i believe my smashboards experience would be hindered.

i used to do the thing where you disable the poster name post # join date etc so everything was anonymous, but decided to keep the names for tally of who has the tendency to have posts i like/dislike

I also believe its clear to also assme that the same hierarchy would continue between posters, and also the rep system is ghay.

Just make it so you can hide post votes for those who are bothered by them.

Is there any chance of being able to search by post length, votes (+ or -), or within 60 seconds of a previous search? Also, any chance we'll get the ability to disable auto-censoring?

Question, what about adbots? Will they run amok after the update?
There is a Captcha on the new register page, which will hopefully slow them. Granted, adbots can still happen if they have a human answering those Captchas, but as usual I can just add them to my tallly. :b:

Could always make it so profiles need to be reviewed by an admin? That's extra work but human adbots often make several accounts on various forums with the same name.

Well I'm now getting this stupid 30 second wait thing a lot more often usually followed by a double post from being redirected back to the page without my post on it, only to try again and see both attempts succeeded despite being denied the first time.

I actually would like the "like" system as long as it comes with a "dislike" system as well. If not, then uhh... It'll pretty much just be a cosmetic, ignorable change to SWF.

What does the like/dislike even add to site?

I've always thought of it too as a useless feature of youtube and facebook.

Dislikes could be a hint for mods to keep an eye out for that guy. Lots of posts go unreported and people get away with the dumbest things. it could also warn people about a certain member's attitude in a thread, or if he's crossing boundaries.

Just because the website will have a like feature doesn't magically mean it'll suck from now on. It's a feature you don't even have to notice, it's purely cosmetic. You could never look at it and it won't change a thing about the website's experience. Just like smileys, embedding videos, images in signatures, .gifs being allowed in posts, etc.

So can we imbed porn and ask people not to look at it either
it'll just be small and in the corner of our posts
It's purely cosmetic and it won't change a thing about your experience if you don't look at it

Posting porn is not a cosmetic thing. Re-read your post and think about how dumb it sounds. You clearly don't know what cosmetic means, apparently. hint: it's definition 2(c)

actually the porn in the corner IS purely cosmetic while a like/dislike button is not as it actually has a function.
but nice try anyway.

It would be cosmetic if it wasn't against the rules. Since it is actually having adverse effects on people and the attempted nature of the website, it has a purpose, it's got a practical effect. You set off emotions and mods get super pissy about it. If everyone starts posting porn, a lot of people'll start getting banned because of it. That's a pretty big effect.

All liking posts does is increase a number under the post, it's neither an adverse nor a positive effect. It doesn't enhance the website experience, with or without it, the website will continue functioning as it is doing now. Hell, I wouldn't even call it an effect since it's not really doing anything at all besides moving a number up. Everyone on the website can like every single post ever made, and it won't do anything but count them. I consider that cosmetic; it's like having a counter attached to your house's wall, where all it does is count up to 10 then reset. It does something, sure, but it's still a cosmetic with no actual purpose but counting whatever it counts. No one can even use the number for anything, and before you know it, the number will start from 0 again and you'll forget all about the previous count.

Really, if you don't like it, it's ignorable. Porn and the effect it induces isn't, whether you like it or not.

All those things are problems with the people not problems with the picture(s). Rules can be changed, and being emotionally offended by a picture is a reaction people have control of. Not arguing in favor of porn. Just that something being purely cosmetic is not a reason to include it.

All liking posts do is increase a number under the post, it's neither an adverse nor a positive effect. Hell, I wouldn't even call it an effect since it's not really doing anything at all besides that.

It doesn't have any obvious effects, no, but it serves to change the way people post, and for the worse. Getting likes becomes a focus of posts. If you don't believe me, just look at facebook or reddit. I don't want that **** here.
