The SBR-B is currently working towards reaching a final conclusion on Captain Falcon. This issue has divided the community for at least a year now and we had already decided that we’d come to a definitive answer after Genesis, the major tournament in San Francisco. We had both sides write up a short essay consisting of their main arguments and are having a final vote in the SBR to decide our official stance. The pro-ban side needs a 2/3 majority for Captain Falcon to get banned, as is the procedure for everything the SBR recommends be banned.

Because this is such a major issue, we decided to let the community have a say in it as well. This idea was coined by Xaoz, so you should thank him for including the community in this. Below you’ll find the arguments presented by respectively the pro-ban side led by Xaoz and the anti-ban side led by Captain Falcon himself. Please read through these and make an informed decision. The results of this vote will count towards the SBR decision. One vote will be added for the side that reaches majority and an additional vote for every 2.5% past 50%.

Pro-Ban Side

While the community has been worrying about Meta Knight and his ban status, the community as a whole has overlooked another character who completely breaks the metagame. Captain Falcon is far too broken to be allowed in tournaments, to the point where every other character in the game is rendered unviable. We believe that Captain Falcon should be banned from competitive play, for both the health of the game and of the community.

As such, this document has been written to outline several key points to explain the reasoning behind a ban. We will follow into what makes Captain Falcon "too good" of a character. The latter points delve into the effects of MK on the metagame as a whole and the community. We appreciate your taking the time to read our argument and make an informed decision.

1. Falcon is a detrimentally bad character

While he is considered one of the fastest characters in the game, Captain Falcon is often cited as having no viable approaches, and has horrible priority in all of his attacks, considered the worst in the game. Because of this, anyone playing Falcon in a competitive setting will undoubtedly lose to even the worst of players, resulting in eschewed tournament results across the board. Falcon is so bad, it is unnecessary to strategically ban any stages or counter pick characters, thusly completely breaking the stage strike and counter pick systems.

2. Falcon is too fun to play as.

He deteriorates the mind of the player into a pile of fun. Where we take the fun out and make it serious and competitive, Captain Falcon's very presence causes a disturbance in this and makes the game oriented around having fun. This is detrimental to the metagame of Brawl as it distracts players from the discovery of new techniques and strategies.

3. Falcon has too many good songs in the game.

Falcon is a musical wonder. Putting 'Falcon' in a YouTube search will teach you this. There are too many songs in Brawl that support this trait of Falcon. Falcon's music is frequently hacked into other stages' music rosters, completely breaking the balance of musical epicness, and negating the use of half of the music in the game.

4. Captain Falcon's moves are beyond those of any other characters.

Captain Falcon's signature move, Falcon Punch, has already been banned from tournaments as it's been known to brick Wiis and cause miscarriage amongst the teen pregnancy community. This means that Falcon has a move so powerful it negatively affects communities not even remotely tied into our own. As well, Falcon's Down Taunt can be spammed to a very high effect, cause the opponent to become annoyed and lose their concentration, thusly deteriorating any competitive atmosphere within a setting. Falcon's knee, while having only two active frames of sweetspot, can be used to kill at ridiculously low percents off the stage, and can combo into itself. Falcon's UpB, Falcon Dive, is one of the most powerful stage spikes in the game, and has grab priority on it's way up, and can be combo'd into with a knee, adding to Falcon's stable of reliable kill moves.

Pro-Ban Evidence:

Conclusion:

With these points in consideration, we believe that Captain Falcon as a character is:
(A) Within our community's banning standards
(B) Detrimental to Brawl's metagame
(C) Has a negative impact on our community

and thus, we believe that Captain Falcon should be banned.
