~In-depth F-Zero GX~

The Game

F-Zero is a race through space in the year 25xx A.D. between ingenious racing machines and over challenging racing circuits. It is the fastest and most over-the-top race, sponsored by a millionaire(Super Arrow) seeking the most dangerous and ultimate thrill. Prizes and glory are won by first-place finishers with many pilots as unfortunate victims of hair-raising accidents. As the rules of the race constantly change, the stakes, excitement, and danger increase.
This is what F-Zero is about speed and deadly curves!

F-Zero GX is the 4th installment in the F-Zero series, the father of all futuristic racers.

If you are new to the F-Zero games, then this picture might help you out.

1. On the left side of the screen you will see 6 unfriendly faces during the entire race. 1. is the leader of the race at the moment, 2. is second etc. etc. All characters' faces are fully 3D rendered, and some dominating animation will play everytime they move a spot during the race ;)
2. That's actually you! You can adjust the view if want to see the action from the nose of your vehicle or want a bigger overview from high up in the sky etc.
3. CHECK! The check-sign will speed around at the bottom of your screen warning you about threats behind you. If you "master" the importance of the check-sign you can cut off other players who hoped for a better ranking .
4. Yes you are driving THAT fast. As you can see it shows km/h and not mph.
5. That's the track you are racing on. Before racing a new track check where the sharp curves are, and keep an eye on it during the race. This will keep you from banging into the rail all the time. Your position is marked with a pink 1p sign, and the leading computer player with a purple COM sign.
6. Those machines are your targets, be sure to smack them with a spin attack whenever you get the chance! If you don't they will crush you. A good stratigy is to attack them in groups. Though you can also "try" ignore them and use your energi on driving better and set a new record and perhaps win the race... but not unharmed.
7. The huge number is your current position. And don't be surprised is you see something like this 12/25, that just means that 5 drivers crashed their machines. Only 24 more to go!
8. The top numbers show you the current time for the whole course, and the lower numbers show you the best lap time(if you have driven a full lap). If there is course record it will be shown under the lap time.
9. The numbers to the left shows what lap you are racing out of how many(will mainly be 3 throughout the game). The red bar to the left is your energi bar. Your health, HP etc. If you bump into other machines or rails etc. you will loose energi, but in lap 2 and 3 you can also choose to use energi and change it into boosts instead. But don't use too many boosts cause they drain your energi and when the energi bar is empty you will die by a touch of an enemy. Drive through pink/purple fields on the track to replenish your energi. There will lso be Nitro pads placed all over the track they will give you a "free" boost without using any energi on it, so be sure to time your boosts right and use as many freebies as possible.

Controls

As you can see, the attacks have been simplified to just pushing a botton and using the control stick. Look in the next post to see how to avoid that ;)

Modes

F-Zero GX features 9 modes(might be more to be revealed). Some old and some new.
  • Story Mode: Clear a series of chapters with Captain Falcon
  • Practice: Go race that track again and again until you know it inside out.
  • Gran Prix Mode: 30 vehicles race. Each pilot has his/her own ending movie.
  • Versus Mode: Multiplayer mode. Play with up to 3 friends.
  • Time Attack Mode: Time trial. Improve you time again and again and rank on the net.
  • Customize Mode: This mode allows you to combine parts to build up your own unique racer.
  • Replay: Watched your coolest races ever... if you saved them.
  • Pilot Profiles: Just who is Billy? Who owns the Black Bull? Find out in this mode.
  • Options: Change what you need to get the optimal experience.

Story mode: 1player. You control the most popular F-Zero driver, Captain Falcon, and beat certain missions. The F-Zero team has created some nice cut-scenes just for the Story Mode, they show a lot more about the characters than you will see on the track. Each time you clear a chapter you get the chance to buy the next chapter for a certain amount of tickets, which you get from playing other modes such as Grand Prix mode or F-Zero AX. There are 9 cool chapters. And you can choose three different difficulties: Normal for those who wants a challenge. Hard, if you like to throw around with controllers. And finally Very Hard if you have a death wish.

Practice Mode: 1player. Practice Mode basicly plays like it did F-Zero X. You can choose to practice any track, on any difficult setting. The gameplay is almost the same as in the main game, except that you race an endless laps, and have boost power from the beginning.

Grand Prix Mode: 1 player. This is the main mode of F-Zero GX. You Choose between 3 difficult settings: Novice, Standard, and Expert(unlock Master later). There are also 3 cups to chose from, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Cup, each with its own layout of tracks and challenges. Many things have to be unlocked/completed in the Grand Prix mode so that you can use it in some of the other modes.

You'll be able to use the racers that you've built up in either version via the GameCube memory card.
There are 3 different parts to buy. Engine, Body Part and Cockpit

The Engine determs your machine's speed and acceleration. The body part influences in stability, strength and energi. And choose your cockpit for grip stats.

Up to 8,000 unique racing combinations can be made. Use your custom machine in practice mode.

You can also use many many emblems to put on your custom vehicle. Either use the ones you unlock, being cartoonized pilots and other F-Zero icons, or draw your own emblems with the Emblem Editor. Using thousands of colors, and other tools you can really make anything in your imagination... if you are good enough that is.

Replay: If you had a really nice run, or say that you eliminated all 29 enemies in a race, you would defintely like to show it to your friends. Well save that race and watch the replay in this mode. The replays take around 3 to 13 memory blocks, and you will be able to change camera angles and be in charge of the soundtrack playing during the replay.

Pilot Profiles: Here you can read the background of every racer, and learn more about their lives. And if you choose Machine Profile you can see a 3D model of the vehicles. Each profile comes with its own specific music theme that reflects there personalities.

Options: If your TV supports it you can turn on the widescreen mode to turn your game into eye candy. Or change other stuff like Rumble, Control settings etc.

Characters and machines

The F-Zero Grand Prix only features the top F-Zero pilots in the universe. They come from each corner of the different galaxies and are prepared to put their life on stake for a race in the infamous Grand Prix. Though this year a new rule has been aplied. Instead of the casual 30 pilots, we now see up to 41 pilots participating in the race. Still only 30 pilots can be on the track, so those who draw the short straw have to sit as leftovers on the bench.

The F-Zero machines sport a unique feature: an anti-grav unit known as the "G- diffuser system". It allows them to hover, and a micro-plasma engine boosts them to super-sonic speeds.

Here is a list of charcters and their cars that will appear in F-Zero GX(still uncompleted):

Worlds and Tracks

The F-Zero courses are lined with anti-grav guard rails and are set on the outskirts of cities situated high up in the planet's atmosphere. Expect deadly turns every second, the most crazy loops, flying through air hoping that you will land on safe ground again. So far it has been confirmed that we will get at least 20 tracks to race on.

Mute City: A metropolis in the heart of the Space Federation.

This "Mute City," short for "mutant city," has great influence as an information nexus for the entire universe. Over a billion people live in Mute City and all kinds of sentient life co-exist there. It's regarded as the most advanced and sophisticated city in the universe. But its skies are black, plagued by heavy pollution that triggers massive thunderstorms. However, the clever minds within the city have devised methods to harness the power of these consuming clouds and have built many power stations to capture their energy. So much energy, in fact, that it can be sent to other power hungry planets. A brand new Mute City course was just recently constructed when the old course became too worn and dangerous.

Port Town: Tower of Babel built by wealth.

The 26th century is dominated by intense competition between planets for profitable interstellar trade. As a result of this competition, planets have built huge space harbors to attract the massive space trading vessels which can bring enormous wealth to a planet's inhabitants. The Port Town space harbor, for example, has been unsparingly built with the newest technology and aesthetic refinements in mind. This multilayered structure is centered around a massive shaft towering over three miles above ground and is regarded with awe as the most advanced and largest harbor in the universe.

Green Plant: Biotech green plant made to generate oxygen.

Because of an explosive increase in population humans have been forced to emigrate to other parts of the universe to secure the necessary means for life, especially oxygen. To assist this struggle, biotechnologists have created plants of unusual vitality, using them to build a completely automated oxygen-generating facility, the "Green Plant." The plants, however, turn out to be more intelligent than humans, and while faithfully fulfilling their function as oxygen generators, breed quietly throughout the universe.

Lightning: Power facilities made by an unusual weather.

The perpetually dark skies of Lightning were caused by extreme air pollution that continues to destroy the ozone layer. Now the frequent bolts of electricity which hammer down from the sky are harnessed and put to use by innovative power companies. The total power generated in the efficient recycling facilities exceeds 10 million giga-watts. The output is so great, in fact, that Lightning now exports its excess power to neighboring planets.

Aeropolis: Skyscrapers made by a super mechanical brain.

The entire region of Aeropolis is controlled by a super computer. The central control unit, called "Mother-Q," stores and computes detailed information on all Aeropolis citizens to create the ideal living environment. Because of the dramatic population increase, Mother-Q has created skyscrapers that can regenerate themselves breeding new structures to house the ever-increasing Aeropolis community.

Vegas Palace: [i]Fortune seekers flock to this city of lights

Located in the entertainment district on the outskirts of Mute City, Casino Palace is a magnet for people seeking to increase their material wealth. Dome-shaped entertainment facilities fill the sky with neon signs making outrageous claims, and the streets overflow day and night with tourists who are willing to believe them. Fortunes are won and lost again every hour of every day, and now the area is even more popular thanks to the arrival of the F-Zero circuit.

Outer Space:

Outer Space was once a Space Colony, but it was hit by a large group of meteorites. It was for no more use but the F-ZERO execution project requested to rebuild what was left into an F-Zero race track. Though successful the track is full of dangerous hazards. Every F-Zero pilot fear this place. Featured track is Meteo Stream. It consists of wave part, pipe part and slip zone.

Sand Ocean: An ancient culture protected by oceans of sand

Sand Ocean is an extremely arid frontier planet which for many years was thought to have been completely void of human life. Though the planet may seem like simple gigantic dessert there's a lot more than just that. An ancient civilization once lived in the ruins of Sand Ocean 30.000 years ago. But the isolated secret was to be revealed when a fearless adventurer discovered the ruins of the old civilization hidden deep within the desert -- along with a monstrous alien lifeform.
When the desolate planet was discovered, it was called the greatest discovery of the century, and it quickly became a popular sight-seeing area. It quickly turned into an amusement park... and what is an amusement park without an F-Zero track?

Fire Field:

Fire Field was once one of the greatest places in the galaxy to harvest minerals. But the leading resources company was too greedy and dug too deep and hit a volcano. It caused a huge explosion that turned the place into a fire h*ll full of extremely hot magma.
The resources company was driven to the crisis of bankruptcy, but teamed up with project F-Zero and constructed a F-Zero circuit amongst the crimson lotus flames.

Big Blue:

99% of the surface on Big Blue is covered by water. The planet was strictly protected by the nature conservation group over a long time, but it was rumored that a new energy source laid down at the bottom of the seabed, and investigation started right away... what did they find? Well perhaps one of the F-Zero GX pilots can tells us, cause they are gonna race the blue planet.

Steering Wheel

Can it get any better? F-Zero GX supports Logitech's Force Feedback steering wheel. Read an IGN article here for info.

To get the ultimate F-Zero GX experience you will defintely need this wheel. It'll feel like you have your own F-Zero AX in your house!

Let me show you some pros and cons.

Pros:
  • It's a wheel... F-Zero GX is a racer... Guess what gives you the most realistic feel; The cube controller of the Logitech wheel(with force feedback!)?
  • The entire control scheme is remapped for the wheel, allowing the shift pedals to lean the craft left and right, AND YOU CAN EVEN DOUBLE TAP THEM TO SLAM IN EITHER DIRECTION a move that you can't even do with the standard GCN controller (there's a separate slam button).
  • Logitech's wheel got a 8.75 in a IGN review. Click here
Cons:
  • It's a bit expensive. To get both the wheel and pedals you have to pay around $80. Though you might find it cheaper at ebay etc.
  • The list of Gamecube games supporting Force Feedback isn't exactly great in anyway.
Downtown Run (Ubi Soft)
Hot Wheels Velocity X (THQ Inc/Beyond Games)
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (Electronic Arts Inc.)
Paris-Dakar Rally 2 (Acclaim)
Pro Rally 2002 (Ubi Soft Entertainment)
Rally Championship (SCi Games/Warthog)
Speed Challenge (Ubi Soft)
Burnout 2: Point of Impact
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

F-Zero AX

F-Zero will be the very first game to utilise the Tri-Force platform. Not only will we be getting a new F-Zero for our gamecube, but we will also be able to play it at the arcades. In the arcade you will be able to slip down in the drivers seet with force feedback wheel, and of course pedals. If you bring your memory card to the arcade you can "download" new machine parts, the records you set, and crazy stuff like that.

There are two types of the arcade carbinet.
The deluxe and and standard

F-Zero AX should start popping up everywhere now, I already know about four places in Japan and on eplace in UK. So lets make a list of where you can tryout F-Zero AX
I understand no japanese at all, so don't laugh if they make no sense whatsoever. But if you live in Japan click on the links to get a map of where to find it.

Please contact me if you spot a F-Zero AX anywhere!

The Music

F-Zero GX took the next step and moved to a more techno flavoured soundtrack. But of course there are still many heavy rock songs that played a very big role in the previous F-Zero games, especially F-Zero X. The music matches the different courses very well. A fast-beat techno in the futuristic Aeropolis courses, while the raw Fire Field course comes with hard rock. Each world has it's own unique music track, which is altered for the last lap of each race.
While you almost get exhausted from listening to the fast music when racing on the courses, it can be quite nice to settle down to some slow relaxing music in the many menus, from Garage to Shop.
A new exiting addition is the many themes in the Pilot Profiles. Not only does the Pilot Profiles come with detailed info about each character, but also a special designed music theme for each pilot. And the themes are very different, wether you like the lyrics in Captain Falcon's theme, cool trance at Dr. Stewart, moody music in Jody Summers profile, cheesy music in Beastman's profile, there are simply all the styles you can imagine.
Speaking about cheesy music; Story Mode holds the very core of cheesyness in F-Zero GX. In many of the FMV the background music spice up the comic atmopshere feature in Story Mode, although cheesy the songs are cheesy in a stylish and cool way.
Finally, there is a Big Blue remix in the game. Just because of the move to techno Amusement Vision didn't completely forgot about the music in the previous F-Zero games. Remixes of Mute City, Big Blue, Red Canyon and others can be found in the game for so that the hardcore fans can rejoice.

Kick arse. That is all I have to say.

Like I said, Nintendo's E3 line-up is going to be awesome. I just hope that this doesn't have lik amazingly fast cars and confusion. But good 'ol Nintendo wouldn't do that to us.

I just captured some screens from one of the trailers, the one with the weird dune planet track. Just to show a little something

Oh this is pretty bad quality but I can't do better

This shot is personally my favorite from all the trailers, very cool!

Uhh... a face?

This is one of the huge worms I'm talking about

Another cool cut-scene showing a huge explosion.

And finally: Look at the beautiful crowd, all animated, well it looks really cool in the trailer, cut-scene or not.

This game looks like it will be a great addition to my 4p games. Can always use one of those.

Man, this game will be da bomb!

I never owned an F-Zero game, but this will be a good first one to get. Captain Falcon is so badass with his golden nipples and all. I'm sure if I had golden nipples I'd be as cool as him.

Thanks for all the info MK, especially without that pic of Princia Remode, I would have still thought she was a character from Soul Cali 2 lol.

Anyways, this game is supposed to be incredibly fast. People were actually complaining at E3 that Mario Kart was too slow because they came straight from playing F-Zero. That is awesome.

I'm really tired right now, so I leave you with this advice: Avoid the F-Zero rip off, Tube Slider, at ALL costs.....

The racing year comes in with F-Zero GX (so hard to decide whether to get this or Soul Calibur 2!). Soon the other two in my trifecta, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Kirby's Air Ride will be released.

If that's the final cover art, Nintendo needs to fire their artists.

Agreed it's probably the ugliest boxart I've ever seen, finished or not. And Falcon's yellow nipples already got all the attention they need.

I want to see a cover with fast cars, and beautiful background. Or some very stylish cover(though it doesn't mix that well with the comic world of F-Zero)

But yes, worst cover.. evar!

OMG. FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO LOVES F ZERO AS MUCH AS ME! MK, you rule.

I swear to you I've seen Tanaka in a picture, so I'll get that to you over AIM sometime. I sure hope none of the original drivers need to be unlocked through the arcade, or else I will be very unhappy. Especially Antonio Guster, he was my favorite. I doubt any of the first forty will be though, considering that it would be odd to have different numbers missing as you flipped through the character select screen.

The new vehicles look great, and the tracks are great too, and so is the first person view. Man, I am so psyched for this game, and now I have somewhere where I can discuss my love for the best N64 game (screw ocarina) and its sequel.

You know something is wrong with me when I have all F-Zero pilots names memorized in my head, and their vehicles, and their numbers

EDIT: The Tanaka picture I had previously stated I had seen was a picture of Roger Buster. Sorry.
